I'm wondering why would they call this Battlestar Galactica?

Throwing bitter feelings aside, why name this BG? It seems to me that you would call it that to feed off the original show's popularity.

But they have created a product that most of the fans hate with a passion. Infact there is a relatively small number of BG fans who are in the "I'm looking forward to this" catagory. There are some, but relatively few. Most of the fervered fans of the mini also slander the original tv show.

So WHY call it Battlestar Galactica? What purpose does it serve?

Throwing bitterness aside, this really doesn't make much sense.

I somewhat understand the legalities of why it had to be named BG ... but since they were planning to do what they did with the production's direction, why even worry or bother in the first place? I mean they could have just gone ahead and lost the rights, they weren't going to take it seriously anyway.

It's like I said before. RDM wanted to be able to throw all of his "I'll fix everything wrong with science fiction" ideas into something. And this was the best opportunity to do that. Otherwise, he'd have to pitch his ideas on their own merit as it's own show, which apparently he didn't feel comfortable doing.

If they called it something like BSG the next gen, much of the furor would not have exisited

This whole thing reminds me of a two kids fighting over a piece of candy in the middle of a candy store.
