I once posted this question before and am posting it again however with a twist. I post at his site and depending on the outcome will ask it directly to him.

I voted yes. I think he could pull it off and satisfy BG as well as Bridges' devotees.

He could pull it off, but I think Sean Conery would do better as Cain.

I just couldn't say yes.... I used to like William Shatner, but his ego has just gotten too big for my taste - When I watched his interviews on the "Director's Cut" DVDs for Trek II, III & IV, I just heard so much "me, me, me" that it just sent me over the edge as far as respecting him as an actor. That, and he would seriously have to hit the gym if he did get a chance to play Cain!
I saw Lloyd Bridges recently in one of my favorite late 80's films - "Cousins" with Ted Danson and Isabella Rosselini. There is just so much personality that comes through in Lloyd's performances - no matter what film or series that it is in or how old he got! Big shoes to fill indeed...
I would like to see someone else do it. Nobody else really springs to mind at the moment. Just not Bill Shatner - just put a fork in him, that ham is overdone!

He could pull it off. I don't think that Sean connery would do
it as well. He's too Sophisticated and I can't imagine him as
douglas MacArthur or General Patton.

Ah... if only Donald Rumsfeld could act, he could have a second job. :D
I'm just joking. :D
a middle aged Gregory Peck could have done this role. I also like Sean Connery. :)

Y'know...
I was having a thought after I posted about this - I know that Kirk Douglas wouldn't have been a bad choice before his stroke, but what about Michael Douglas?
Later folks,

I think that Bill Shatner WOULD definitely give a convincing performance as Cain BUT, ..............no matter what role he takes on, for me, he has been typecast as James Tiberius Kirk. I can not see past that and would forever be making the comparison - "What would Kirk have done" or "That's not the way Kirk would have done it", etc.
Now, that's not to say that I wouldn't want to see him, at all, in BSG but, rather in a supporting role or cameo. I think the ST "baggage" would wind up being a detriment to the show if he were cast as a primary / recurring character.
2 actors that I could see doing justice to the role of Cain -- Robert Conrad and Michael Ironside.
(With this having been said, I would unfortunately have to vote "No" but, it is definitely a qualified "No" only because of the ST "baggage", NOT of Shatner's acting abilities).

As BST said Bill is too close to ST. Conrad or Ironside could do BSG and bring some real energy to it.

I was just thinking Micheal Douglas right before I read your post! I'd love it. I like Bill, but I do not see him as Cain. Think Clint would ever consider Science fiction?????

That is a thought. I have often considered both Clint and Charlton Heston. Sadly Heston is suffering from the earlty effects of Alzheimers. Very sad for Charlton Heston is an icon in the world of show business.

Any of the Bridges brothers would be too young, anyone near Dirk and Ricchard's ages you can discount right off.
Connery would be good, but his accent would be a bit bizarre!

If only George C. Scott was still with us...
For some reason, I can see Sam Elliott in the role, but his accent might not work well either. :)

For this Moore-Ron miniseries only, I would say yes. It would help to add to the campy and stupid nature of the RDM mini-series.

Don't think I could sit through Pesci as Cain.
I could imagine the dialogue between Cain and Adama...
Adama: "Cain, swing the Pegasus around front and we'll sandwich them in between us"
Cain: "ok, ok, ok, ok, ok, ok, ".

Cain: "I can't figure out what's wrong wit da Pegasus. She ain't acceleratin'."
Adama: "I believe, Commander, that you have 'mud in your thrusters.'"
Cain: "'Mud in da trusters?' I ain't never hearda dat. Tell me, how does da mud get into da trusters?"
Adama: "That, Commander, is a figure of speech. Over time, without proper cleansing, spent tylium residue builds up along the walls of the feldercarbuerator lines, preventing the proper level of fuel from entering the thruster combustion chamber. Those residual tylium deposits closely resemble the red mud formerly found on Caprica. Caprica was famous for its mud."
Cain: "'Mud in da trusters,' huh? Sheba... you ever heard o' dat? 'Mud in da trusters?'"
Sheba: "No, baby... I ain't never heard of that."
Cain: (To Adama) "She ain't never hearda dat. She knows everything dere is to know about Battlestars, and she ain't never hearda dat."
Adama: "Right. I'll have Col. Tigh contact our fleet Mechanic, Charlie, on the Rising Star."
Cain: "Yeah, you do dat."
Sheba: "Anywhere to get Chinese food around here?"
Adama: "I beg your pardon?"
