View Full Version : Why Won’t We Give It a Try?

(I also posted this at Sci Fi. Am thankful they let it go thru).

The question that seems to get asked most frequently is, why won’t we the original fans give the new mini a try? That is a fair question and deserves a good answer. But before I say anything, I want you to know how I feel about TPTB and mini supporters. I hold Universal in much respect. They produce some of my favorite movies (Back to the Future, The Mummy). Their DVD packaging is second to none, with the very best spreadsheet style info and every detail a DVD-phile could want, all in one place. And please also know the main reason I signed up for cable originally was the Sci Fi Channel. What could be better than a channel dedicated to my favorite genre? (I have stated many times I loved Taken). And I firmly believe every individual has a right to see their dream come true, even if it’s not my dream. Dreams can coexist.

So why won’t we watch? Is it because they had the opportunity to use the original cast and decided not to? Is it because they changed 2 main characters into women? Is it because the super cool Cylons which will certainly go down in sci-fi history are now merely human look-alikes? Is it because the Galactica, the pride of the Colonial Fleet is now a museum piece? Is it the blatant sex and disrespect for the military, so that our children cannot watch it now?

Or is it because the eagerly awaited and fan appreciated Tom DeSanto and his project, rumored to be closely faithful to the original and sporting several original cast members, had the rug pulled out unceremoniously scarce weeks before shooting. Or maybe it’s because we were teased with a prequel allowing both universes to coexist, only to have it cancelled days before filming. Maybe it’s simply because we the fans have been told over and over we do not matter.

Any architect can look at the elements of a plan and estimate beforehand whether the plan is worth building. Any programmer can evaluate a set of input ideas and tell you if the executable is worth creating. And we as fans can look at all the negative things and how we have been treated and imagine whether the show is worth watching.

Every individual has the right to see their vision come true, be it mini or continuation, provided it does not prevent everyone else from realizing theirs. We don’t want to watch because the mini is in replacement of, not addition to, our long-held dream. We asked for bread but we received what to many of us is a stone, and it hurts to bite into it and leaves us hungry still.

We want to give it a try, but you make it so terribly hard.

Respectfully,
Muffit

P.S. I sincerely hope I have not offended anyone. I do truly hope each of you my friends is able to realize your dreams, real or reimagined.

Thank you Muffit, that was another good post.
We the fans have never really been counted, where Scifi is concerned. That's a bitter pill to take. Then we get attacked
by a divided fan base.
We didn't have to be divided, but that is the outcome. I believe the Galatica market is big enough to support our vision of a continuation.
Today may not have been an easy day for us but there is a bright spot to it. Kingfish's petition now has 200 sigs! That little baby is growing and will continue to grow! That's enough to make me smile.

Why not try it? Well, even though it smells like almonds, I don't need to try cyanide to know it wouldn't be good for me!

As usual Muffit you've done a great post.

That being said though ......I will NOT be recording or
watching or in any way supporting the "MINI".

Here are my reasons:

I have CHOSEN not to watch it 'because' of the story line,
wanton sex, violance on an infant child, and the fact that
this "Script" shouldn't even have the name

"Battlestar Galactica" on it.

WHen I watch scifi ........the scifi I watch is appropiate for
not only 'myself' but my children as well.

By doing a combination of peyton place in space and
of Freddie Kruger's nightmare ............they've taken
the right away from my children to be able to watch
this. I refuse to watch anything that is so vile and
violent that my own 8 and 6 year old daughters can
not watch it theirselves.
