Got pets? Want one? Talk about them here!

My dog passed away a little over a week ago, so the sadness is still strong. He was a great little mutt and very healthy until his 14th birthday. Then, he started getting sicker and sicker for about a couple of months until he just couldn't handle it anymore. :(

At least his pain is over.

HUGS!

I'm was so sorry about Bruno. I was incredibly sadden to hear about his pain. But atleast he don't have to deal with it no more. :(

I had a doggie a long time ago. He was named Champ, but I called him fumblebutt after an old tv show. It fit. He never did learn about sharp high speed turns aound slippery floor tiled corners. But I loved him. :D

Ravyn,
I too had a wonderful pet Ashton. She was a mix mutt I found .
Someone had left a box of puppies by the road side and I found them. I kept Ashton and found homes for the other two.
I was 16 then and she just passed away last fall. She was also thirteen. It's sad I just had her to the vet and was trying a new joint medication to help her walk better. Well I let her go outside one evening and she got out of the gate. A neighbor saw her walk to the woods. They say dogs will do that when they know it's time to go. I looked for her for two weeks, and never found her. I know she is in a better place now and without pain. There is a poem called Rainbow Bridge and it helped me alot. I'll try to find it for you.
On a BRIGHTER note!
I just recently adopted another stray. A mixed mutt too. His name is Jake. Cute little puppy. Took him to the vet and I was told he is a Sheppard St. Bernard mix. SWEET BIG Puppy now! 6 months old and weighs 50 pounds!!
I guess I'm a sucker for a cute face!

I had a sweet little budgie (parakeet) named Lorita (I think it means little parrot in spanish) for all of 7 years. Since I work from home I spent oodles of time with her. I invented this 3 tone whistle/song which I used whenever I called her name (each syllable of her name was a different tone). She got so used to it she knew her name by the 3 tone tune.

The day she died she had been very sick and we have no bird vets in our town. She fought to stay alive till I could reach her and hold her. As I held her in my hands, I whistled her 3 note name one last time. At that exact moment she let her life go.

I'm sorry, I can't get used to special friends dying, it hurts too much. :(

I hope it is ok to post this poem. It is a good one, hope in some small way it will make all of you feel better. The link will take you to a site where I found the poem.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I had a precious friend die in my lap, and it was 3 years before I was ready to let another cat into my heart and home. You really do get attached to them. Phoebe and I seem to be doing better now, I understand she has 'special' needs that I need to respect, and I push them only a little in the hopes that she will learn to trust me. i talk to her a lot, too, because she understands me, and sometimes she answers. I told her I wanted to give her a bath today to clean an area she is unable to groom herself. She spent an hour pacing, first she would hide from me, then she'd sit next to me, then she'd hide again. She didn't fight me during the bath, and she napped on the sofa next to me shortly after it was over. There is progress, but she still flinches when I pet her sometimes, and she still worries where my feet are.

I have one dog. His name is Willy.
He's around 12 years old now.

He's a German short hair pointer and
Lab mix .......and only GOD knows
what else.

When we tried to put him on a diet;
he became a natural hunter. WHile
he won't go after the LONE charcol
gray mouse that came into the house;
he'll go after everything else .........

I'll be nice and refrain his DINING habits
with his prey ......but I will say that it's
a great diet suppressent.

I love pets, but I get too attached to them and it hurts to much when they die. So right now I have none. But my spouse and daughter never give up, and bring home the strangest animals as pets. They brought me rabbits (and believe me you get tired of shovelling mountains of poop real fast), hermit crabs, and even a chicken!!! What the heck kind of pet is a chicken? That was joined by a rooster and our whole neighborhood was angry with us for being woken up at 5:00 in the morning by the blasted crowing!!! Plus they kept flying over the fence and we had the police bringing them back to our door (that's our only animal control).

And with every animal I get stuck feeding them and shovelling poop.

They finally got me a stuffed beaver and that works out just great!!!

Our dachsie, Simmie, crossed the Rainbow Bridge last January. We knew it was coming, she was only ten years old but she was very, very sick and fading fast. We had planned to have her put to sleep on a Friday evening, spending a last week with her doing all the things she loved, cooking her favorite foods, and basically getting used to the idea that she was leaving us. Unfortunately she didn't make it past Monday.

I had dogs die in my past, beloved pets and friends, but I was younger then. I didn't expect Simmie's loss to hit me so hard, but I was totally devastated. My wife too.

For us, the best medicine was to find another canine friend to help us through our grief. We got Hansi, another dachsund, a week after Simmie left us. Hansi has been a great comfort. Not a replacement, noting could replace Simmie in our hearts, but she has helped to ease the pain a very great deal. We got another pup just a month ago, now we are a two dachsie family!

Simmie will never be forgotten. We made a little shrine to her on a shelf in the living room, and her pictures are everywhere. My wife's Yahoo group, A Dachsie World, is dedicated to her memory. We miss her still, but we are confident she is waiting for us on the other side of the bridge, tennis ball in her mouth and tail wagging furiously, a glint of mischief in her eye...

Dang, I'm tearing up just checking my spelling as I type this...

Rayvn: I'm very sorry for your loss.

My dog is an American Staffordshire Terrior. (Most people think he is a pit bull - and there is some truth. The Am Staff is a derivative of the Pit) His hobbies include playing fetch (seen here), sleeping (generally on my feet), and eating. In that order

I now am the proud owner of a hamster named "Limbo". My family got her for me over Labor Day. She dances the limbo and sings in chipmunk fashion and is absolutely hilarious to watch. You can hear her from just about anywhere in the house even though she's upstairs, and it always makes us laugh.

Best of all, I never have to feed her or dump her poop. Just change her batteries now and again. LOL :D

In my highly organized life, I get downright new age and karma when it comes to pets. I have not bought one yet to replace another. They always seem to find me.

One of my favorite pets was a stray dobermine we had when I was a child. We named him Sir Lawrence Bogart. About the time I was 16 he started getting large tumors and at the point they started becoming malignant I had to put him down. He had been my bud since I was 9. I did not want another pet, it just was not going to happen. Then, one night I am 19 or 20 and I am with some friends at a Denny's. This half starved kitten comes from behind the dumpsters. No one will take him and he is rubbing against me and PURRING!!! Damn it! Next thing I know I have this kitten in my car trying to figure out how to sneak him into the dorms! For three days I had no idea if he would live or die. He lived all right. He bacame a 23 pound cat that was my personal bodyguard! I named him Denny and he would literally attack anyone that was not me. He died when I was 25 from kidney infection. By this point I was about to walk down the alter.

I went into the life of a newlywed in a tiny apartment. In 98 we finally bought a house. We were in the house for a month when a Malamute just decided to move into our back yard. I took her to a vet and there were signs of physical abuse. That said, I decieded fate had given me a new pet. I have a daughter now and Anastasia is her best friend next to a stuffed Snoopy. That mutt knew my wife was pregnant before EPT did! I love pets and I personally believe that we find each other.

We have a lively 6 month old black labrador retriever named Shadow. He's our first lab and the best dog I've ever had. So amny people have come up to me and told me if I ever want to get rid of him to giv ethem a call. I don't want to give him up people sorry. He sleeps under my chair during the day and won't stay outside with out me. he loves to run through the woods and splash in the water. The kids love him as much as I do and he's a great friend.
We also have a 2 year old tabby cat named Starbuck, hmm wonder where we got that name from, he loves attention and plays with the dog, even when the dog gets rough. When he's had enough he slaps the dog and walks away. He has never scratched .

I lost my black cat Dixie last year on my birthday. This Thursday it will be a year she has been gone. She was six years. My other cat is Lila. She has been with me for 18 years and outlasted my marriage. I have begged her not to die on my birthday this Thursday. The Twin Towers and Dixie is enough. She is feeble, but everything is working and she eats well. The rest of my troup is below. Some of these belong to my daughter, whom for the present, has moved back in with me, so they all feel like mine...lol

I had to give up my cat who was my baby. I am living in an apartment complex with my boyfriend and we can't have pets here. I had Tia for 3 years and it broke my heart to give her up. When I gave her up the shelter I gave her to let me call to check on her. Two weeks after I put her in the shelter I called to check on her and they told me she had been found unfit to adopt out because of medical reasons. I asked them what was wrong and was told that she had cancer in one of her kidneys. I asked them to tell her I loved her and missed her badly and that she would always be my baby. I cried so hard. Two days after being told this I called to check on her and was told that she had been put to sleep that morning and that she had gone fast. I still miss her to this day and always will. But the lighter side of this is Kev has promised me that when we get into a place where we can have pets I am getting a kitten. He knows that this won't replace Tia but he knows it will help.

Have you ever had a pet for awhile, so they get to know your habits, and one day you do something unexpected? I went home sick from work Thursday, and didn't feel like uprooting the cat from the middle of the bed, so I just curled up on the end of it. It completely disorieted her. She got up, paced around the bed, and finally left.

And now for a pet story.

After a heated auction of exotic pets, the victorious woman walked up to the auctioneer. "Well, I'm paying a fortune for this parrot. I just hope he talks as well as you say he does!"

"I guarantee it", smiled the auctioneer. "Who do you think was bidding against you?"

A city beaver named Herman went to visit his country friend Clyde, way out in the boonies.

"You look pale", Clyde said. "You need some sun. Why don't you take my rifle and my two Retrievers and do some hunting?"

Herman had never hunted before, but decided to do as his friend suggested.

Fifteen minutes later he was back.

"That was fun!" Herman gushed.
"So why'd you come back?", Clyde asked.
"I need more dogs to hunt", Herman said.

Speaking of pets, since many people have horses as pets, I thought I'd mention something. Being overly sympathetic, I have a hard time losing pets, and it shows when I watch TV too. When I watch westerns, I spend more time looking at the horses' expressions than the actors. I always wonder, what are they thinking? Do they mind being treated as vehicles? I was watching a western tonight and after about 10 or 15 minutes realized I hadn't noticed the plot at all. I was admiring the horses and studying their faces to try and guess their emotions.

Anybody else do that? Hope I'm not alone...:)

he is my 8th pet, my first after marriage. according to the vet he is half cocker, half caniche and about 7 years old. He was abandoned when he was less than 1 year old during the Kabila take over Kinshasa. One friend found him but could not keep him because he already had 3 dogs.
My wife never had a pet, so i decided to try and brought him home. Two days later they were best friends. Now he is like her shadow. :D
But he gives me attention too. Every morning during breakfast ( he loves cheese) and when i return home from work i must play with him for at least 15 minutes.

OK! Get ready for this.

A little over 10 years ago, I got a kitten after watching "The Lion King" and named him Simba of course. He is still kickn' at my dad's house, because my sister didn't really want to give him up.

A year or so later I got a Collie. She was my baby. I named her Majie, short for Majestic. A couple of years ago, she was having health problems, so I set up an appointment with the vet. The day before the appointment she started acting real funny, and that morning, she couldn't get up on her own.

I took her in, and they took a blood sample. It wouldn't clot. Her blood was almost clear. She had very little red blood cells left. Apparently she had gotten into some rat poison, or she had anemia. They could run more tests to find out, but the fact was she was going to die soon, and there wasn't anything they could do about it.

I cried all the way home, broke the news to my sister, and brother, to which they cried too. Majie had been part of the family for nearly 8 years.

It was only 10 hours after the news was broke to me, that my little girl took her last breath.

I was devastated. And the last thing I was thinking about, was getting another dog. At least not right away. But, my dogs death was effecting someone else more. My sister still lives with my dad across the drive from me, both houses on the same farm I have always lived on. She has a Basset named Remi (Red and White). When my dog died, he stopped eating. He was always depressed. It was so sad.

Two weeks went by. My sister noticed Collie pups in the paper, but I knew I had not the money to afford an AKC pup right then. She offered to loan me the money, so I called.

This is where fate comes in. I called the number, and asked if we could come see the pups. She gave me the address, and right away I knew this was meant to be. The address was on the same road I had bought my first Collie on 8 years prior.

As it turned out, the litter belonged to the daughter of the women I had gotten Majie from. I knew right away which pup was mine, also just like Majie. I named Jessie, also short for Majestic. It turns out Majie's sire was Jessie's great grand sire, or something like that.

Jessie has been a great addition to the family, and she cheered Remi up, as much as she cheered up me. Both Jessie and Majie are/were sable and white.

There is more pets in the house though. Buckles you seat belts.

I have 8 indoor cats. :yikes:

OK! I can explain!

In the spring of 2001, I noticed the sounds of kittens mewing in the loft out in one of the barns. The mother had been killed that morning, so I took the four kittens in. Their eyes were just starting to open, so every 4 hours I bottle fed them, and took care of them until they were old enough to start taking care of themselves. They are still around today. Names are Casper (All black cat), Ezri mostly white with black. And, Blade and Star. These two are almost identical. Both black cats with white paws. Blade has a white stripe on his nose, and Star has a white spot on his nose, and a black spot on one of his white paws.

Next came Inky, a long haired black cat, and Riley, a short haired yellow tiger with white legs, chest, and nose. They belonged to an elderly neighbor, who has health problems, and decided she wasn't going to be able to take care of a couple of kittens, so she asked if I could. I can never say no.

Then came another dropped off pregnant cat. My dad hates cats, and yet loved this one. She gave birth out in the barn to a litter, that we couldn't get too. They grew up wild, all except one kitten. But, one day we noticed one of the wild kittens had something wrong with it's left eye. With some patients, we caught her. She wasn't happy.

We took her to the vet. They told us that an ulcer had eaten thru her eye ball, and what we were seeing was a bubble of what was supposed to be on the inside, now on the outside. We paid to have her eye removed. When we went back to pick her up, she was no longer the same kitten. She couldn't get enough attention. Vet said that the pain she must have been in, she had to feel like a totally different cat. Due to the medicine we were going to be having to give the kitten, she too was now going to be an indoor cat. She was the lucky one. Her siblings and mother were either killed in the drive, or took off, and never seen again.

She was so sweet, I took to calling her Sweetie, and it stuck. She still can't get enough attention.

The latest addition came this summer. I was going over to my cousins house to take care of their cat while they were gone on vacation, and out behind their house I heard a kitten crying. After going home to get my brother and sister, and about 40 minutes of running back and forth through weeds and wild berry bushes, we got ahold of this kitten.

He was literally nothing but skin and bones. He was so sad. His long yellow hair, all matted and everything. We went and grabbed some kitten chow, and some wet food, and that little guy went to town.

We couldn't agree on a name for him. We were going with Copper, but not really feeling right about it. Then we went to watch "I, Robot." We came to the scene in the movie where we find out Sonny's name. We all looked at each other, and all knew we were thinking the same thing. Sonny is growing fast, and like the rest of our cats, he wants attention all the time.

I remember having cats as a kid, that didn't want anything to do with anyone, and now we have 8 cats who want attention all the time.

As a matter of fact. We have one cat, Riley, who loves strangers, and that includes strange dogs. It doesn't matter what kind of dog comes to visit, this cat comes running to meet them.

Yesterday, a guy came to replace the hard drives in my computer, coming to you from my brothers right now, and Riley wouldn't leave the guy alone.

I have learned one lesson from all of this. Don't say, "No more cats!" because every time I do, another one shows up. :Nsmilie:

Wow Excalibur, 8 cats!! That's amazing.

Speaking of cats, after many, many long years of abstinence (from pets, not you know :naughty: ), today this daggit finally gave in and adopted, not one, but TWO cats -- half-grown kittens actually. A daggit with cats -- I can never go home to Daggitopia again!!! :D

We dubbed them Professor Miller and Doctor Guk... :wtf:
Will have some pics for you later!!

well I have fish. My male siamese fighting fish I have in the container he came in for Xmas. He was a gift from me mom. The stupid fish at least once a day tries to bury himself in the rocks in his container. So I either have to move the rocks to free him or agitate the container to help him free himself. I got so exasperated with him one time that I named him s$%#head!

And next to his container I have a nice five gallon tank of fish. Their names are Lucifer,Baltar,Athena,Sheba,Boomer,Jolly,Apollo, Starbuck. I have Black neons, Zebra Danios, Glow lite tetras and Spotted Corys. Can't tell if I have male or female as its very hard to tell with these kind.

I grew up in a house with at least one dog and at one time up to 28 cats! (My mom & stepdad were suckers for fuzzy faces!)

I now have my own home and have restrained myself a bit. At the moment it is 2 cats and two dogs, but in the spring it will be three dogs. My Shepherd mix is getting old & lame & can't play with the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) pup the way he wants her to, so I contacted the GSP rescue and asked them to look for a female to keep my little guy company... hopefully they will drive each OTHER crazy and not double my craziness! If anyone is familiar with the breed, they are incredible, loyal, gentle, fun dogs, but they are also equipped with only two speeds: "off" and "full speed ahead". Combined with the fact that they are known as the practical jokers of the canine world, I will have my hands full.

The Shepherd mix is a rescue, I found her from a yahoo group called "Dogs Needing People" and agreed to take her sight unseen. When I showed up in southern Rhode Island to get her, she was an almost exact clone of the dog I grew up with, my sweet Katie, who died of cancer 4 years before. The only way to tell the two apart is that Keesha was fat and Katie's ears only stood up halfway. It was definitely meant to be, I felt a connection to her right away.

As to the cats, Itchy will be two in May and I am her third owner, she was found wandering the streets of the neighboring town and her two previous owners just couldn't keep her. She and the GSP enjoy an uneasy truce (as in, if you don't run from me, I won't play tag with you) and she loves the Shepherd. Smokey will be 17 in March and has had only one eye for about 15 years, but she is neither slow nor clumsy the way you would expect an ancient one-eyed pirate kitty to be. :D She is senile enough to occasionally forget that she doesn't like dogs ;) and will lay down next to the Shepherd and rub up against her. When she remembers that she doesn't like dogs she will stand up quickly, smack the poor Shepherd on the nose and stalk away in a huff, leaving a bewildered dog staring after her, as if to say, "What did I ever do to you?!". :D

Growing up on a farm, we always had critters around, and they were always tame. At the highest count (during my lifetime, there have been more there before I was born) We had over a dozen dogs and more than 30 cats (all at the same time). But now that I live on my own and since my future is, at best, uncertain, I haven't got any.

As a token of my appreciation here is a modified nursery rhyme that me father taught me as a child.

Little Miss Muffit
Sat on her tuffit (what the hell is that anyway ;) )
Eating her curds and whey
Along came a spider
and sat down beside her
so she took her spoon
and beat the snot out of it.

:D

(The snot is the modification. ;) )

The version my brother taught me went:

Little miss muffit
sat on her tuffet
drinking her gasoline

When along came a spider
with a cigarrette lighter
and blew her to smitherines.

-My brother is rather disturbed.

Switch to diesel fuel, it may explode under extreme pressure, but it's fumes won't. And as an added attraction, it has to contact flame to burn.

And this is Doctor "Bruce" Guk, who's really shy - had to snap him behind the washer!

P.S. -- Pay NO attention to that hideous floor in the bkgrnd; we just got here and haven't had a chance to change it to the much more attractive red oak hardwood yet... (blue walls, yellow floor, and green curtains - gee, what /are/ they thinking in Tennessee??? )!

Love and purrs,
Professor Miller, Doctor Guk, and a hideous monkey dog
