i was looking around and found a way that i think will stop these pesky messenger pop ups. follow this for win-xp home,
start/control pannel/performance and maintenance/administrative tools/services
once on services, scroll down to messenger, highlight it then right click the highlight and select properties. once there under "start up type" select disabled. then click apply and ok.
i tried this earlier today and have yet to recieve any messenger pop ups. if the messenger pop ups bother you as much as they do me, this might help you.
have a good one,

Use netscape 7.1, in the preferences you specify that you don't want popups except from sites that you allow. Seems to be working great, I haven't gotten any for a long time.

bst, from the look of it, i dont think there is a way to disable the messenger service in win 98 or win me. here is the page that i found the way to stop the win xp home messenger service.
http://xquizit.unst0ppable.net/seductive/visitor/tutorials/messenger.html
they have directions for win 2000, xp home, xp professional and nt. like stevew said try painicwares pop up stopper. i use it and it stops most of the pop ups in the free version. windows messenger is different from regular pop ups. my panic ware was not stopping them.
there is another freeware you can get to help stop pop ups it is ad-aware the url is
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7423,00.asp
it removes "spy ware" from you pc. some things require these to run. i have removed all spyware from my pc and have had no problems. i continue to run ad-aware and remove spyware from my pc once a week.
i placed that on my friends pc and it removed over 400 spy ware devices. they use spy ware to know where you go on the net (among other things) and they send you pop ups from that information.
artemis has a good idea about using netscape7. i would also recomend a fire wall, thomas (conundrum7g) gave a link to a good free fire wall. i dont remember the link but you can message him and i am sure he would give it to you.
right now i am looking for a way to stop "pop unders" the pop ups that come under your browser. panic ware does not stop all of them either.
have a good one,

If anyone is using them, they have something that disables the Windows messenger service.

This is the built in Windows Messenging service and not to be confused with MS Messenger, right?
I hate that message service. M$ should remove it. It does nothing but deliver spam to almost all of us. I have window2000 and the first hing I do upon reinstall is kill that process.

yes, thomas it is windows messenger not msn messenger. if you didn't know how to disable it just follow the steps for windows 2000 it is a little different for win2k than win xp. it is at the url
http://xquizit.unst0ppable.net/seductive/visitor/tutorials/messenger.html
the only mistake i found in the direction for win xp home was at the end they say just click "ok". i dont know about win2000 but in other windows programs you need to select "apply" then click "ok".
so far i have been messenger service free for over 12 hours. i was getting 20 or more a day before i disabled it.

Eventually I installed a new Firewall. It was Norton/Symantec. It eliminated the Windows Messenger popups and the other popups as well.
Nowdays everyone should have a good firewall, what with all the worms and other junk floating around.

kingfish, did you get the messegner that comes up "messenger service" or another pop up. the messegnger service pop ups look like this at this url
http://xquizit.unst0ppable.net/seductive/visitor/tutorials/messenger.html
it is in the top left of the page. if this is it, did you select apply before you hit o.k.? in step 9 it says just to hit ok, in most windows you have to hit apply then ok. also you might need to restart your system. i did not have to but that might be why.
once i disabled it, i have not had another messenger service pop up.
also which operating system are you using? it will stop them in xp home, xp pro, 2k and nt. if you have 98 or millinum it wont stop those.
i did find something for bst that should help in win98
http://www.messagesubtract.com
let me know how it goes, i hate those pop ups.

From what I was reading that MESSANGER has nothing to do with Windows Messanger service. It needs to operate or something could happen to windows.

i disabled it over a month ago and my windows are still working fine. what did it say could happen to windows?

If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that depend on it will fail to start.

alerter messages are nothing but junk spam messages, as far as i know. if there is an alert your windows update should get the needed security files. or you can check the microsoft home page for needed patches and updates. all i have ever gotten from that message service is junk spam messages.
if you dont feel comfortable disabling it, don't. i dont want to advise you to do anything that you feel would compromise your system.
