Battlestar Galactica: A New Hope?
Just signed your petition and the poll at cinescape. It would be nice if someone would listen to the people who can make or break the show. It only seems logical to try to please the original fans while attracting new ones, but logic doesn't appear to be SciFi channel's strong point. Sci-Fi doesn't appear to be the SciFi Channel's strong point! Just my opinion!

Hello folks -

I kind of had an idea... It's not scathingly brilliant, nor is it terribly original -- and kind of old-fashioned to boot!

What about a picket line?

There will be quite a few BSG fans down in L.A. during Galacticon - what if we got as many of us together and go over to Universal and have a peaceful, yet meaningful picket line at the front gate? We could have signs and the whole 9 metrons. We would not, however, attempt to block traffic or disrupt anyone. Just cause enough of a scene to get the media to show up....we could get heard on local news and possibly even CNN.

What does everyone think?

In Hatch's on line chat at Battlestar.com He appeared to be against the mini. I know he would hate to see anything taht is Battlestar fail, but I thought he said this wasn't BSG. That they should just change the name. I think that is close to what he said.

I was pretty sure Richard said at one time at Dragoncon that he didn't ever type anything himself online except e-mail and even then he usually had Sophie or someone else in his camp do it because he types slowly. I could be wrong, of course.

But he HAS said he doesn't support the mini - and coming in one after the other like that... does whomever (cough, Ted, cough) did that REALLY think we're that stupid? Seriously!

--Rhonda

jewels
August 18th, 2003, 01:43 PM
Paul, I don't think you have to worry about that being Richard or Dirk--it just doesn't feel right and they wouldn't have signed it that close together. If you think about it they'd have more likely focused on working with Larson or working with DeSanto if they made any comment at all. In my gut,
I think Tracy would tell you the comment isn't in line with how Dirk operates.

Just my gut.

AlphaAce, Welcome to Colonial Fleets!

I respectfully disagree with this opinion. As a second attempt to tell the Battlestar Galactica story, this mini-series pales woefully in comparison. Whereas the original story tried to portray the remaining Colonists as being worthy of survival, as a species, Moore's slant for the mini-series portrays humankind as generally being ones deserving of extinction. He takes a very dark view of "the human condition" and spends 4 hours telling us how worthless we are ("we are the failed creation").

Regarding tangible elements such as ships, weaponry, and equipment in general, he takes us back to the stone age in terms of technology. The mind-set being used with respect to this tends to point in the direction of this show being done "on the cheap". Items such as character names and clothing styles also contribute to this -- Earth-like suits and ties? -- Earth-like names? -- for a people supposedly living 1/2 a galaxy away from us. Sorry but, I don't see much "creative genius" with decisions like this.

Hopefully, you haven't invested a lot of emotional capital in this new mini-series. If so, I hope it lives up to your expectations.

Thanks for the welcome, BST. We will just have to wait and see how Moore's final version turns out. I am not saying that his version will be better than the original, but perhaps it can at least get casual sci-fi fans to look at the classic series again.

The only reason they are making it is to keep the rights. Do something with the property or lose it. This is also an attempt to keep Larson out of the picture. Ron's version can't copy Larson's work without his permisssion no matter what Ron tells us.

So, are you saying that if Universal (I'm pretty sure Universal owns the rights to BSG) doesn't make a new show or release something new the rights go back to Larson?

Not sure, AlphaAce. Universal does own the TV rights to BSG and Larson owns the rights for a theatrical production. Sort of a "split-decision", if you will.

Regarding Universal having to produce "something", I believe the answer to that is YES. My understanding of the Copyright Laws, i.e., "Sonny Bono Law" is there is a window of opportunity for them to produce something to "update" the property and after doing so, copyright protection remains in effect (for another 75 years??). If they do not exercise that option then, the property falls into the public domain and is available for anyone to "update".

I'm going to post another topic regarding this issue. I think it's time for a refresher on the Copyright Laws (and hopefully some links to the actual law, itself).

If Larson has the rights to make a theatrical release of the movie why hasn't he done so already? Is it a question of funding the project, or does he not have any interest in doing so?

I can't answer for Glen Larson. Up until this point he probably didin't see a need for a mootion picture. However looking at what Moore has planned for the property, this could make Glen take action.

Well, I would like to see Glen Larson make a BSG movie, perhaps this will motivate him to do something.

Happy Birthday AlphaAce! I just got the Dvds today too.
I have only gotten to watch disk one, but I loved the bonus features! The cut scenes gave more depth to the story, glad I got to see them.
