Mr. Olmos,

I’d like to thank you for your candor recently in the press about the up-coming Battlestar Galactica mini-series. I’d like to apologize if any of my fellow fan’s correspondence to you was overly harsh. We can be a passionate bunch and like any group there could be the occasional extremist or immature individual. There is even a small group of “bomb throwers” who’s intent is to make us look bad. Please don’t paint us all with one broad brush. Many of us “purists” have commented that you would be a GREAT choice for Adama in a retelling of the story that stayed true to Battlestar Galactica.

I understand that your message is not that the new mini-series is garbage, you are probably proud of the work. Many of us would probably had given this show a chance had it been tagged with another name. We where most pleased that you brought out in the open that Bonnie Hammer and Sci-Fi had not been honest about this being a series original fans will enjoy. This is a Battlestar project we did not ask for.

We Battlestar Fans are much more opened minded than you we’re lead to believe. At one point we were ready to compromise so much, we waited 25 years I WANTED to support Ron Moore’s project. The fans we’re met with a brick wall.

With that please consider this analogy. Battlestar as a classic, historic-building needing renovations. Projects we supported included new wiring, plumbing, glass and some carpentry. Moore, Eick and Hammer decided to tear down the entire building leaving up only the facade then erecting a new one behind it.

I appreciate your integrity. I thank you for your candor. We will continue to support your speaking out.

A fan of much of your work

Dear Mary Ann,

Please pass on my compliments to Mr. Olmos for his honesty regarding fandom's reaction to the remake. :)

Dear Mr. Olmos,

I am a fan of the original series, and have campaigned for years for its return, and while I am disappointed in the remake concept, I applaud the honesty and integrity of Mr. Olmos, and I will tune-in to see it, just to see his performance.

I started my involvement with BSG (as we the fans abbreviate it) in 1978 at the age of 13. I found something gripping in that story, and when it was cancelled, started a petition to bring it back. We were given Galactica 1980, which though a continuation, deprived us of most of our heroes for almost all new faces, except for Lorne Greene and Herb Jefferson. That was a bitter blow. In 1999, I met Richard Hatch and worked with him and his team to create "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" which was a continuation of the original series set twenty years into the future, and featured several original cast members. For me, working on this was a dream come true and yet it was bittersweet, for it is only 4.5 minutes of finished film. Like a wisp of a dream that has passed, and in the morning is gone again. I had the chance to meet with Tom DeSanto and Bryan Singer when they were trying to get a continuation going for Fox television, and that was very promising until the plug was pulled. Through all this, I have continued to campaign. The remake is in production, and it is a drastic change. I have extreme reservations and I am also very disappointed, but I give credit to Ron Moore for listening to my ideas and discussing with me personally many of his reasons for changing things, whether I agree with his changes or not, at least he showed respect in that regard.

I did review the script myself, as I was provided with an advance copy. I have even created a 3D spacecraft for the miniseries FX department. As a fan of the original, I am willing to consider this a parallel universe and give it a chance. Perhaps a hint in that direction (whether it should ever materialize or not) would assist in the peace offering. But regardless, Mr. Olmos, I salute your integrity, and I thank you for your part in keeping the voice of the production honest!

Sincerely,

Kenneth Thomson Jr.
