View Full Version : "Goodbye" everyone.

Hello -- and "goodbye" -- to everyone.
For the past five+ years, I've webmastered for BattlestarPegasus.com, BattlestarGalactica.com, RichardHatch.com... and more recently for GreatWarofMagellan.com and GalacticonEvents.com.
It's been a labor of love. It's been a centerpoint of meeting some incredible individuals.
As of tonight, though, I've decided to stop work on these sites.
Don't conjecture and don't rumor amongst yourselves: I've decided there is a time and place to move on. Put simply: This is it.
- BattlestarPegasus.com is already offline.
- The other sites will find new web owners; I'm not deleting the content. I imagine that ought to be an interesting "battle" as some folks rush to Richard to "help" take care of them. For the record, I've asked Richard to talk with Nathan Proia about adopting the sites. Nathan, imho, is the only BG webmaster whom I believe should be handling these sites -- and can hopefully stay clear of both fan agendas, attitudes and bullsh!t.
I do not plan to watch the new "Battlestar Galactica" show. In fact, I'll be first in line with my pre-order for the Original BG series DVDs. And there's Richard Hatch's books to continue the adventures which we almost had... And I can only hope that Glen Larson and Tom DeSanto keep the faith (on their side of the fence) for future possibilities.
Some of you may have heard about two special BG side projects I was working on. At present, it's been a labor of true love and selfless effort to make them happen, and at a significant cost (like the web sites) which I pay out-of-pocket to give hope and happiness to fandom. Unfortunately, I'm shelving them at this time. They would have rocked.
Hanging up my helmet for now... :colwar:
Best,
Michael

Michael,
This is sad news, but I understand your decision. Hobbies can be fun, but life must come first. I wish you well with whatever you do, wherever life takes you and your family. Please stop by to see us from time to time to let us know how things are, since we, your friends, care about you.
Your friend,
Tony
P.S. I continue to pray for you.

As a comparative newcomer to this fandom, I am still very much aware of how much you have done, Michael. I am very sorry to hear you are stepping away. You will be sorely missed.
Please stop by here every now and then, if only to say Hi.
All the best, always, to you and yours.

I'm saddened that you've had to decide to stop further BG related things............I can remember 2 years ago when I decided to see if there were ANY Battlestar rumblings on the net......I searched for 'Battlestar Galactica' on the search engine.....AND BEHOLD!....I found your sites, battlestargalactica.com, battlestarpegasus.com, and a host of fantastic other BG sites!........ I couldn't believe how much I missed all the revival efforts that had been going on........and all the work by people like Michael Faries, and ALL the others!...................
Your site lead me to find out that Richard Hatch, Dirk, and Herb were to make an appearance at the SCIFI CON later that year!....I WENT, TOOK PICS of my IDOLS.....saw the Second Coming Video, etc.etc.!........
I'm 37 now and can remember when the show debuted and how much I anticipated the next episode, I even tape recorded the audio!......then the bad news that it was cancelled   I even wrote Universal to bring it back----- I still have their reply postcard in my collection.
I even tolerated BG 1980 just for memories and was thrilled beyond description when "The Return of Starbuck" aired......then heartache once again...I think?.....when it was killed.....maybe for the better now that I think about it.....oh well!
Your work IS appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely,
AC

Michael, I can understand why you might not want to be involved in official sites anymore, especialy when it starts feeling like a second job, but I hope you stick around forums like this. I'm already bracing myself for the paranoid speculations I know will be coming from at least two people, but maybe they'll take your advice and refrain. Drop by as often as possible.

Even for someone who is new to the Battlestar online community like myself, it is easy to see that you've put in an enormous amount of work and effort on behalf of the fans of TOS. All of that work is truly appreciated. God bless, and good luck in all your future endeavors.

Mods Notes: Nightscape: sorry I missed your submission earlier and a few of us were a little emotional (I was at least) when this happened. Michael put it in discussion originally, but it is news as well. Micheleh moved it here. He appreciates everyones prayers/well wishes.

Hi,
I'm not going to be maintaining the 3 web sites-- BattlestarGalactica.com, RichardHatch.com, and GreatWarOfMagellan.com. This is due mainly to conflict of interest, and also having underestimated the size of the source code of each site. I've contacted Richard Hatch and Michael Faries regarding this. I also recommended Darrell Lawrence of ColonialFleets.com (for his graphical and organizational expertise) and Chris Feehan of BattlestarFanClub.com (for his experience coding a large content-driven web site). Best of wishes to Michael Faries, and I hope that he can still visit the online forums from time to time.
Regards,
Nathan

I too am sad to see the end of the great sites, I've visited them many times, and enjoyed all the treats and treasures they held.
I also hope you'll be comming back here occasionally to keep us updated on your life.
Why does everyone keep leaving? Should I change deoderants?

Hi,
Flamingo Girl: The sites aren't ending, only Michael's outstanding stewardship of the sites. Michael is fowarding all of the content on CD-ROM to Richard Hatch's team. As far as I know, BattlestarPegasus.com is the only site to go down, but Michael is also fowarding at least the graphics, meshes, and Rag Tag Fleet network to Richard's team for inclusion on BG.com.
Warrior: The PHP script and MySQL database experience will certainly come in handy, as well as your incredible CGI talent and people organizational skills. I certainly hope you join Richard's team. I'll say this, though, if PHP-powered forums with a MySQL database are utilized on BG.com, the bandwidth for the site may very well skyrocket, especially during rerun days on SFC, not to mention the unfortunate mini-series broadcast in December. Hopefully Richard's host will have a handle on the server bandwidth.
Regards,
Nathan

Michael, I'm afraid there isn't a whole lot I can add to all the great things said in this thread about you but I can tell you this, To me, making friends really has nothing to do with a TV show. It's only but one thing that most of us have in common.
Over the last year I have come up with a lot of Ideas for all of us to try. Some that were ok and some not so good but you supported most and the ones you didn't, you were honest about why you didn't and I appreciate that.
Best of luck to you my friend and thanks for making my last 3 years one hell of a ride.
