“Thought For The Month: I have to confess to not being particularly fascinated by the previous incarnation of ‘Battlestar: Galactica’. Spacious isn’t exactly the way I saw the original programme. More like a Buck Rogers equivalent with its 70s styles costumes, cloaks and attitudes. “
“I was commenting to one of my reviewers, ‘But there were only five fans anyway, is it likely to change with a new incarnation?’ Her reply (hello Stella), ‘I thought they only had two fans.’ To each our own and you can tell me how wrong I am on the e-letters page. [Me controversial?]”

Here's what I wrote. I dropped enough names and links to get the message across, I think. :D
Hello, Mr. Willets!
My name is Michelle Giacalone, and I am writing because a member of our
site, www.colonialfleets.com, informed me that you would like
verification of whether the total count of original series Battlestar
Galactica fans numbers two or five. (Lol!)
I am a moderator at Fleets, also I am the volunteer coordinator for
Galacticon 2003 (the 25th anniversary convention) at
www.galacticonevents.com, and work closely with Shawn O'Donnell of the
Battlestar Galactica Fan Club at
http://battlestarfanclub.com/battlestar/ and Michael Faries, the
webmaster of Battlestar Pegasus and the official Battlestar Galactica
site at www.battlestargalactica.com and www.battlestarpegasus.com,
respectively. (Look at that, we're up to three people already!)
I can't pull an exact count off the top of my head, but the number of
fans worldwide who can be reached through the net is very close to 2200
at this point. I welcome you to check out any of our sites, and thank
you for your time. Have a great day!

Here's what I sent:
"Mr. Willmetts:
I, too, am a member of the www.colonialfleets.com community, and became aware of your comments regarding Battlestar Galactica via the good offices of one of our other members.
I can assure you, sir, as I am sure others have, that the fan base for Battlestar Galactica's original incarnation does exceed 5, perhaps even 10. There are a number of Battlestar Galactica fan sites on the web devoted to the original series; I would point you in the direction of Michael Fairies' http://www.BattlestarGalactica.com as a starting point.
It's been said that there are at least 2200 fans of the original Battlestar Galactica readily accessible on the 'net. This, of course, does not address the other multiple thousands of fans around the world who do not frequent the discussion boards available on the internet (I just discovered them recently, myself).
You only count 5 fans? Better limber up the other hand, Mr. Willmetts, and take off your socks, too!
I am...."
So, there.

That one needs to be available for d/l from here.
Hey, how about a whole collection, Bonnie as a Starbucks Barista, Eick as a spokesperson for Hairclub for Men (He's not just their spokesman, he's also a client) Olmos as spokesman for the ThighMaster, or the Popeel Pocket fisherman.

You should do one where he's working at the concession of a theater, holding a family-size popcorn. ;)

I sent Mr. Willmetts the following short note:
Dear Mr. Willmetts:
I appreciate your comments regarding the original Battlestar Galactica. Regarding the number of fans of the original series, the original premiere was the most watched show of the fall of 1978, with an estimated 60 million viewers. Since this was almost 25 years ago, the executives at The SciFi Channel believe that all of those 60 million are now deceased or senile. However, please be assured that there are, for a 25 year old show, a surprisingly large number of fans who still have all or at least most of their teeth and a significant portion of their mental facilities intact, both in the United States and around the world. Almost 17,000 have signed the on-line petition that can be accessed from www.battlestargalactica.com . I'd give you the exact URL within the site, but I just received a note that said that "due to high demand, the current site cannot be accessed at this time."
For you count, our Battlestar Galactica nostalgia and writing group at
www.battlestarcallisto.com
has over 100 members, approximatly half of whom are also members of
www.battlestarfanclub.com .
A few other good websites for additional information include
http://www.colonialfleets.com/forums , http://www.kobol.com/, and http://www.geocities.com/sjpaxton/ .
Unfortunately, due to the path chosen by The SciFi Channel's management for the upcoming Battlestar Galactica miniseries, we do not expect to see the numbers of Battlestar Galactica fans increase significantly. The script released for fan review by Mr. Ron Moore's production was not well received by most fans of the original series since it deliberately changed much of what made the original memorable, essentially hijacking the name for a new, much different show. As a result, if you are referring to fans of the NEW Battlestar Galactica mini-series, your estimate of five fans of that upcoming, unfortunate debacle may not be that far off base.
Good luck with your count.
Sincerely,
Tony

The Latest On Sci-Fi Channel Censorship Posted 4-29-2003 23:17
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Considering that next to the announced upcoming mini-series the biggest story involving Battlestar Galactica this year is the overwhelming lack of support Ron Moore/Bonnie Hammer/David Eick have from fans of the original series. Now on a forum where there is supposed to be a free exchange of ideas and debate the Sci-Fi Channel wants to silence fans of Battlestar Galactica. Below is part of the text posted by the Sci-Fi Channel staff and a link if you want to check this out your self.
This board was created to discuss both the classic series and SCI FI's new miniseries, which is a re-imagining of the original. The debate about a re-imagining vs. a continuation has run its course, and new articles on the subject won't be posted.
Battlestar Galactica is currently filming in Vancouver, B.C., and is scheduled to air in December 2003. We welcome discussion about it.
Thank You,

I just sent mine to and I gave him the URL to the petition that now has over 16800 on it. The 5 fan statment is right if you are looking at the new show by Ronald D. Moore.

I haven't gotten a response, mine went in day before yesterday. Pointed to Petition 1, suggested he try a google search and just look at the 10 pages of possible links. Referred to the fan club.

No response here, either, though with the sarcastic humor I attempted to convey, I'm not surprised.
