in the theater in 1979

Did any of you see the movie when it was released to theaters across America in May 1979? What was the Sensurround like? Since the show had premiered nine months earlier (and I doubt most of you owned VCRs at the time), did you notice then that it was edited from the pilot version?
When it was shown in theaters in Canada and Europe in summer 1978, was the Sensurround included there?

I was one of those kids who watched Star Wars 37 times in the theater...of course I rushed out to see Battlestar. Sensoround was a decent gimick for the time it's no THX by any stretch.

Yes, I noticed the film was edited you could feel it moved faster. I also missed some of the great dialog they cut.

I was fortunate enough to get a VCR by the time it aired on HBO.

Well, Take the biggest speakers you have, take a track of loud base rumbling sound, and point it at the flooor. Turn it up, and there you have Sensurround.

It was originally developed for the Movie Earthquake, and was also used again on Hindenburg.

It was also considered for Buck Rogers, as well as Galactica, but the decision was made since the BATLLESTAR GALACTICA theatrical release was essentially a cut down version of the pilot, which had previously been aired, there needed to be some kind of "value added" aspect to the release.

For some reason though, it never worked as good in the local theatres, as it did in the Sensurround Screening Room at Universal.

Well if your local theatre had built their own system for Star Wars, Dolby, It came out Very Well INDEED. (especially sitting 8 rows from the stage, center seats, curved screen.)

I will never forget the first time Galactica rumbled across the screen. Mmmmmm.
It's why we still build theatres.

Same in Star Wars (Ep 4) as the Imperial cruiser that goes over your head in the first scene after all that copy to read. Mmmmmm.

I know it cost $7 million to make--does anybody know how much money the theatrical version made?

All of the posters I've seen (I have two), the set of window cards I own, plus a life-size cardboard standup I once saw of Apollo, were all promotional items for the movie, not the series. Was there much merchandise made to promote the movie, or was the rest in conjunction with the series?
As for the cardboard cutout, I saw that for sale at one of the first science fiction conventions I hade ever gone to, in the mid-80s in downtown Cincinnati. It was $35 and I will regret it until I die that I did not purchase it, because I've never seen it again. Have any of you seen this or do you own it? Were there just standups of Apollo, or were there others made of the other characters?

I saw the Big G in all of it's glory. I was so enthralled that I accidentally stuck my hand in the soda by mistake.

I saw it too (just married at the time). The father (and son) in front of us kinda spoiled it for me. The son was excited as I was, but the father was a real sour downer. He turned to me and said, "I can't believe I'm wasting money on a TV show". (He was sure it was the TV footage instead of something new).

Heck with him, I loved it. There were no VCR's (well not many) in those days and to see it on the bigscreen was great.

Saw the standup of Apollo on eBay a week or so back.
Went for $11.50
