I know many of you have never worked a direct relationship with a video distributor such as Ingram Entertainment which is why many of you ask about info on the DVD set. This is pretty easy to explain if you follow what really goes on.
Vincent Debernardi, a.k.a. scifiman76, works for Ingram Entertainment, the largest distributor of videos, DVDs, and video games in the North American market. He is one of Ingram's key account executives and my rep for video game products for the company I work for which exports these products to the U.K., the Netherlands, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia. Vince is the most knowledgable person I have ever dealt with when it comes to video games and DVD releases.
Since Vince works for the largest distributor in the North American market, Vince has direct access to the video reps. He gets the news about a release well before a dvdtidbits or whoever gets it. What Ingram does with this is estimate how many units they think they can actually sell by asking their key customers. They turn this information back into the video reps along with other distributors numbers and come up with an estimated build.
For whatever reason, Universal Studios felt that 100K Battlestar Galactica sets would be an adequate number for the market. When Universal Studios is ready to accept pre-books is when the rumors start to come out about these DVDs. Soon you will see them on retail following those rumors. The rumors help to feed sales which is why it is leaked on purpose.
Anyways, I have some good news about this. Because of my personal relationship with Vince Debernardi as my account rep, he has assured me that he can get me at least a 100pcs of the box set. Some of these will be for my company's international customers, while others will be earmarked for Milton who wants to buy 25 of them off the bat and offer them to his quadry for $79-$89(this depends on the cost since that has not been determined by distribution yet) instead of the $99 SRP. If any of the admins are interested in reserving some for the fans here, I have no problem with that.
I know this group is a tough group to convince, so I will leave you with a couple of my customer references just in case you want to verify that I do deal in exporting Ingram's goods overseas. Both them know Vince Debernardi by the way.
Sincerely,
Ted Gorospe
