I have seen pictures of them and was in shock. They looked like something out of a cartoon and reminded me of Foghorn Leghorn. Larson couldn't have been serious could he?

ok... maybe being dense here... but... whats the prob with this?
In Battletech we call these LAM's (LAND AIR MECHS) and in RoboTech they be Veritechs.
If properly done I kinda like the idea.

I've seen that picture before.
If i recall properly it was built by a fan wanting to prove how stupid the idea was.
And i'd agree if that was the plan for the design then it would be stupid looking.
But like Kai says if dont properly a varible geometry starfighter could be really cool.
Like the ones from Japanese animation.
They just wouldnt fit in to the original bsg universe

Thank the Lords of Kobol that this idea never saw the light of day. I can just hear the howls that would have come from the Star Wars fans about "another knockoff". (However, one of the very few things that I liked about G80 was the 'cloaking device' for the vipers).
Just some random thoughts.

they had walking X-Wings? EEEPPP
seriously tho.. why won't it fit into the BSG universe? *shrugs* I don't see why it won't.

It just doesnt seem ike the kind of stuff that would fit with what has been established in the past is all.
The idea I had for introducing Variable geometry vipers would be becasue the cylons developed ship sized versions of the centurion that was way more manuverable and effective agains the vipers.
So the colonials would have developed a counter measure in the form of transformable fighters.

Kai,
It wasn't the X-wing fighters that I was alluding to, it was the AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) walkers. It just doesn't seem like a very useful purpose for the Viper which is much better suited for and would wreak much more havoc on a strafing run, when planet-side.
IMO, the cycles from G80 may be more suitable for land-based attacks, given their flight capability. (Once again, this would be territory already covered by Star Wars, i.e., Imperial Speeder Bikes). It all depends on how they would be presented. Maybe they could actually be 'escape pods' that could 'transform' into the bikes. This would save on storage space aboard the Galactica and give 1 device multiple uses. (Oh my, I think my 2 remaining brain cells just overloaded!!!!)
I realize that all of this is conjecture, since nothing official has been put to film since the original (I don't consider the happenings on G80 to be canon, however, there were some elements of G80 that could be useful in a return of TOS).
Just some random thoughts.

I had no idea they were fan built. I assumed they were the Larson version of the ship. I guess that's what happens when one assumes.

Sorry to have confused the issue, Kai.
What I was comparing was the already established AT-AT walker to a walking Viper, not comparing an X-wing to a Viper or a Variable geometry fighter to an AT-AT. I was referring only to the "walking" part of both and commentiing how the idea had already been done, with Star Wars.
I truly think the Colonial engineers could be a little more innovative.
Just some random thoughts.

Isn't a "walking viper" kinda like a Gerwalk Veritech from Macross?

As far as walking Vipers go? No not at all. If you want technological advances in Colonial technology why not just go for Richard Hatch's Q.S.E. Technology from his novels.
None of this walking Vipers or G80 cloaking Vipers either. Ships that phase in and out of normal space during a battle is more innovative and has yet to be seen in a sci-fi series. Maybe Babylon 5 had the Shadow ships that phased in and out but not during a battle they didn't.
I would like to see a live action Robotech/Macross one day, but not RT/BG inspired walking Vipers though.

Because they're applicable to "BattleTech," "Robotech," "Gundam (name the variant)" and other anime/manga/computer games.
Not "Battlestar Galactica."
I'm not a purist. I can accept some changes. Change is a constant. I don't consider it a natural change, though, for this established television series. It would be a massive paradigm shift for their military equipment/vehicles. That's my problem with it. ;) (Sorry, Kai.)
About the same time that the Viper transforms into a "walking Viper" I'd want to see the Galactica transform a la SDF-1 (Macross/Robotech)... not.

Now I've got this image in my head of the galactica acting like that ship from spaceballs... :uhdrop:

OK, I'm sorry!
No more talk about Cloaking Devices or Transforming Cycles from me!!
See what happens when I let my 'left brain' out to get some fresh air!
(Side note: there was an ST:TNG episode about a 'phased' cloak and coincidentally, the name of the ship was the Pegasus).

michaelfaries- it could be worse. The galactica could turn into the Macross 7, which had hands and a big gun!!!!!!
KJ

Yes BST you are correct there was an episode in ST:TNG 7th season with the U.S.S. PEGASUS that had a "Phasing cloak" but i wouldn't compare that to Hatch's Q.S.E. technology in his first three novels which makes sense being it's based on the "light ships" phasing ability.
Michael Faries has made huge points. There would be changes in a new series true despite the fact we seem unable to let new ideas creep in, there would be changes. But BG must have it's own identity or it will seem like another "Johnny come lately" i.e. been there, done that type of show.
I'm open but WALKING VIPERS HELL NO! nuff said.

Agreed. The last thing that BSG needs, after a 25+ year hiatus is to unveil 'new' technology that another big or small screen venture has already used. It may be difficult to come up with a fresh approach since so much time has passed since it last appeared. (I think the Colonial engineers will be working double-shifts for a good while).
At any rate, the Walking Vipers looked like an overweight chicken!!
It they had these, we'd probably have to change the series name to
Battlestar Chickencoop or Battlestar Henhouse

I'll point out: The scriptwriter of that episode: Ronald D. Moore.

Youd think that with a war that has gone on as long as the cylon war the colonials would have the smarts to develop some kind of super weapon technology like Yamato's Wavemotion gun.
An anime or cgi-Anime version of Galactica is what will breathe new life into the franchise.

I would rather see a Viper with this ability as described in Armageddon. The Scarlet Viper can hover in space.
Hito
March 18th, 2003, 10:53 AM
why would you need to hover in space?
there is no gravity :D

how would you describe hanging in one place without moving?
*puzzled* nothing unusual about that though. ;)
