This morning, watched the Battlestar Galactica episodes 'Lost Planet of the Gods (parts 1&2) on Blu-ray with DTS sound, which was awesome. There were scratches on the film in places (particularly the VFX sequences) but the cinematography really popped as did the sound effects. The VFX didn't look any worse than they do on DVD (so take that doubters!).

I wonder when they are planning on releasing it here in the US?

imho it needs remastering like they did for the original star trek series. blu-ray only improves the picture so one can see all the imperfections such as the matte photography.

I'd prefer it have both options as opposed to just remastered, but I hear what you're saying.

Ordered mine and should have next week. can't wait!

My Blu-Ray set arrived yesterday. (took 3 weeks)

There is WAY more detail in every episode for sure.

For example I noticed the silver strips of cloth in Adama's cape
and uniform have individual lines running through them. Never noticed
that before.

Any dirt or specs during the shows is very minimal if barely noticed
except for space scenes which was expected.

Very pleased to have this!

Peter why are you watching it horribly cropped and zoomed in? That picture looks awful, you're losing the quality by doing that.

Some actual decent screenshots:

According to Bill Hunt at the digital bits he asked universal and there are no current plans to release a bluray set in the USA.

Well that would be pretty stupid but time to get a region free bluray player

Is that screen cap of Adama, alone, the one right after Zac's viper was destroyed?

No it's from The Living Legend Part 1. The caps I took are from that episode and The Young Lords. It was just the disc I had to hand.

It's released by a company Koch Media, who must have bought the rights to release the episodes from Universal. BSG was very popular in europe and apparently the set has been selling well. I think it already sold out from the german amazon site. Keep an eye on the page for new stock.

Is the dialogue in English or German on the set? Just wondering if there was a dubbed version since most people my age and younger were pretty much English fluent.

English and German audio. 5.1 DTS-HD English on the first season episodes and stereo on G1980. The German audio is stereo I think.

“no immediate plans” to release this set in the States

And the German amazon exclusive sets look to be sold out now, so you'll be lucky to get it at all.

I love the fact it sold out quickly....goes to show you know what.

I wonder if KOCH did a limited replication just to see how it would sell.

Hopefully Universal did that with the upcoming DVD re-issue.
I can't imagine many of those will sell as most of us fans
already bought the 2003 DVD set.

^^^ Every time they come out with something official from TOS, it flies off shelves in days. That has to tell Universal that there is still money to be made with the property. It will take time, but I think we will say a more mass-market release of a bluray set within the next year or so. Maybe by the 40th anniversary.

I agree.. as much as I enjoy the DVD.. There are elements that need attention before I will part with more cash !! I thought some of the VFX in the DVD set esp in the opening shots of Saga was just bad.. imo

Unfortunately, and sadly, like many old properties the Studios own
I don't see them re-doing any FX work on them because ALL they
want out of them is CASH !

I agree with many that Paramount is getting back ALLOT of their
investment in the redo's of TNG. Then again, they are charging a
HEFTY fee for those DVD's and I seriously do not see the Studio
doing the same for TOS-BSG because they want money.

Not an " investment ".... :(

The reality is that original BSG is not as popular as the Star Trek franchise. It's never going to get the attention that Star Trek does. If you want to watch the old shows on a 50" screen it's not going to get better than the Blurays, and frankly they look pretty damn good. Much better than the DVDs.

The DVDs will do me then, as much as I enjoy BSG. I see no reason to pay for the Blurays not as the series is currently presented.
I think some of the vfx effect need attention.. the live action is great..

What do you mean need attention? There's nothing that can be done to improve the vfx unless you replace the shots with new ones. That's not going to happen, nor would people want it to. Seeing as the vfx probably amounts to about 2.5 minutes per episode (if that) and the rest looks amazing seems a bit odd to deny yourself these amazing blu-rays.

Cleaned up, improved, replace them either with studio models or cgi to take the series into a new generation.

Star Wars did it, "of course Lucas mucked around to much"
Star Trek did it to good effect mostly
BSG classic has not and has mostly vanished from the radar since the new show appeared.. imo

its what has always hurt the show was the VFX reusing the same effects, the ability is there to address those short coming.

I would like to see it done..

"its not going to happen" that is true,... and that why I won't spend any more on it.

I have the DVD set and enjoy them apart from the issues I have just mentioned.

Yes it would be interesting to see it done, but it's not going to happen. I suppose if you're not that bothered with High Definition then you'll be happy with the DVDs.

I am happy enough with the DVDs

Sadly it won't happen, its a series that deserves more attention. you cannot fault the actors performance's. they are the real meat of the series and not the effects.....

that is why we are still talking about the original series to this day. paramount knew they had to do something for a blu-ray release since the old sfx would stick out like a sore thumb so they did it.
