It's a shame that the rise of CGI caused the fading away of models. From a nostalgia frame of mind, I can physically touch a model of the original USS Enterprise, NCC-1701 but, can't do that with ships used in newer movies/shows.

I agree about models. There is an aspect of creativity when one uses their hands that is lost with CGI, no matter how sophisticated the software may be.

Not entirely true with rapid prototyping on the rise but I know what you mean.

I can see a future (right now possible)where detailed models are build in a 3d app, then machined out of HD foam or plastic. Best of both worlds here with potentialy good continuity between cgi scenes and miniatures.
Imagine Maudib's Galactica model machined in sections and then assembled together, at whatever scale is needed.
I have part time access to several CNC machines right now, perhaps I'll machine something sometime as an example (colonial pistol perhaps).
