I'm planning on making a Colonial laser from the ground up, and I'd appreciate input, suggestions or critiques. If successful, I'll be able to spread the laser goodness a LOT less expensively, AND more accurately to the few TOS BSG fans that can really appreciate it (me being the first one:rotf:).
First crude drawing for general proportion:

EDITED TO ADD: And big shout out to By Your Command for really helpful photos:

How about a few details? Making it out of wood? Resin? Legos?
If you're gonna sell it, do you need a license or isa closed customer project? (I suspect the latter based on what you said but just to be clear).
Lastly, I concur. Dale has done an awesome job archiving lots of fantastic stuff on his site.
All my best,
Russell

How about a few details?
I plan to make a master out of wood, epoxy putty, styrene sheets of varying thicknesses & other styrene RR construction parts & bits from models. Maybe a Lego piece here & there (heavily altered), then mold it & cast it in resin.
I was getting Monsters In Motion kits, but their molds keep failing in key areas, not to mention that it just wasn't as accurate to the real thing as I'd believed. Even heavy modding can't completely fix the proportion issues I have with it.
Once I began crazy research, I started to feel like I should just make as near a perfect one as I could, since no other one is offered anywhere (I even think Coyle's one, although I believe it to be probably the most accurate out there, is still off on some places, and of course, the awful Radio Shack trigger...), I'd make one my own self, and for anyone else that thinks I did a great job on it.

Okay, scratch this.
I'm getting too many conflicting online images & my own DVD caps here. It seems there were SO MANY versions of the laser, in essence, nearly any way it looks is right.
In the words of Emily Litella, nevermind.:D

I ran into the same problem doing my 3d model of the pistol. My reference image library is loaded with conflicts.
I hope you dont give up, just decide what you like and go with it.
