Let's examine the similarities.

Serena had an illness, and was not going to live that long.
Inara had an illness, and was not going to live that long.

Apollo had been disillusioned by the realities of the war he'd lost so much in.
Mal had been disillusioned by the realities of the war he'd lost so much in.

Galactica had so many frackin' cuss words.
Firefly had so many ruttin' cuss words.

Adama was a true man of wisdom.
Sheppard Book was a true man of wisdom.

Galactica had a Socialator.
Firefly had a Companion.

Starbuck could be a loose cannon.
Jayne was always a loose cannon.

Galactica had dramatic sound in space.
Firefly... okay, that's where it breaks down for me here.

Thoughts?

I think you can draw comparisons to quite a few sci-fi works that have similarities to galactica. Some pure co-incidence, some as a sort of homage and some as a cheap rip-off.

The alien attack at the beginning of SAAB reminded me a lot of the attack on the colonies (Telus was also colony) The cheesy speech about the brave new era, the dog and finally the buring flag at the end.

Then there's ID4 with numerous Galactica like scenes. The single mom and kid narrowly escaping the initial attack, but this time the dog survives. Then the biggest one of all time, the presidents wife death scene (coincidentally Mary McDonnell)which was almost a carbon copy of the Serina death scene.

I never noticed the Firefly similarities, but they are there for sure. Some of this is due to the fact that similar character combinations are somewhat universal in most good fiction.

I really did like Firefly a lot, too bad it didnt get more of a chance.

One has to be careful, though, drawing too many comparisons. Oftentimes, if one looks for correlation amongst things, one will usually find it, even if it is not really there.

Many of the scenes described are somewhat universal except, maybe, the scene with Jasmine, her son, and the dog. That could have been drawn from Galactica but, I really doubt it.

Regardless and even though I was a bit of a late-comer to the "browncoat" party, I loved both shows and am truly saddened that neither got a second season although "Serenity" softened the blow a bit.

Part of the reason that I like Castle is probably because I still see a little glint of Malcolm Reynolds in his eye and could still see him saying that "I aim to misbehave!"

Okay, here's one that is BIG:

[Serena had an illness, and was not going to live that long.
Inara had an illness, and was not going to live that long.]

Both of these illnesses were absent in the final cuts of both stories.;)

With all due respect, who cares what is left on the cutting room floor? Canon is that which is televised. That's my point of reference, not deleted scenes.

Well, cannon aside for a moment, I just thought it was an interesting point that the similarity was there as well.
I sense that Joss Whedon was a huge Galactica fan back in the day.
Gorramit!:D

AH ok, I understand your POV now.

I hadn't really thought about Joss being a Galactica fan.

Firefly = 15 stories
Battlestar= 17 stories (16 if you combine Fire in Space and Living Legend like the telemovie.)

Both above including a season each and a movie each.
