View Full Version : Galactica: a watershed of production design talent

There has never been, nor shall there ever again be such a abundance of amazingly talented & creative visual artists assigned to one (relatively to major motion pictures) low budget project, IMO.
From costume design, to sets, to props, to miniatures & FX... this was the shout out from the artists post-Star Wars that they RULED what you see onscreen. A TV budget & schedule hampered them a bit, but they overcame the limitations & ended surpassing them completely.

Star Trek- great ship design, models & creative use of Mission Impossible trash from next door as set deco....
Babylon 5- moody sets & good, creative rudimentary CGI...
Firefly- near perfected CGI & great costumes and set design...

But none of those enjoyed the rampant 70's glee & artistic excesses in the magical mid-ground between simple opticals & digital manipulation like BSG.

I'd post pictures, but you all here know what I'm talkin' about. That first wide shot of the Galactica in the pilot says it all. And if you're old enough to remember seeing the theatrical release IN THE MOVIE THEATRE, you REALLY know what I mean.:D

Sorry for the luv-rant here; I was just working on my Viper model a bit & felt nostalgic.

no problem .....there is a lot about BSG classic going for it......
My wife who is no fan of Sci-fiction relented and watched an episode last night.
and is now interested in seen a few more episodes from the start....

Star Trek does not interest her .
Star Wars ,,, she likes Han Solo
BSG , She liked the characters . (we watched part 2 of "Lost Planet of the Gods,").

most other sci-fi she cannot be bothered ....

was I surprised ... er yes ...but the effects are lost on her.....
But I know what you mean ,,,,

design wise the Battlestar class design is my 3rd favourite to the original Enterprise and the Refit. after that come Star wars designs

Yeah, Enterprise is my favourite design as well,

but Galactica just had so much eye candy in practically every frame.
I mean, I made a Galileo, a phaser & Enterprises, but that's all. But I made a Galactica, Vipers, Raiders, a Basestar & laser(a while back), a recovery bay diorama, I'd like to make a shuttle & diorama for it, another laser pistol... I could mine this series for cool stuff endlessly.

I've often said that when I see the Galactica, either in still pics or on film, I see quite probably the most beautiful, majestic starship that has ever been created.

However,........, there will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, be a spot in my heart for the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701. "No bloody A, B, C, or D!"

;)

When I saw the '03 miniseries I was like, hey! They made the Galactica all ugly!:P: That's not an easy thing.

Thing about the Enterprise ... it broke the mold for space ship design .....

For me the Refit Enterprise is the most majestic star ship followed by the Galactica.
but its close.

The refit Enterprise was very nicely done ......... on the outside ....... but, I didn't care at all for the interior of the ship. It was way too antiseptic-looking. The TOS Enterprise has a more lived-in feel to it.

I actually prefer TOS Enterprise both inside & out!

I'm confoozed. Above you said that the re-fit Enterprise was the most majestic.

Actually, that was a quote from Taranis farther up, which I agree with btw, but the Original E is and mostly always has been my favourite. Not as majestic as refit, I grant you, but stunning in its complex yet simple lines & overall design. Plus, I love the lighting on the saucer section & nacelles.

Does that clear it up?:salute:

Yep. Something about it seemed to give off a warmer 'feel' to the ship.
