View Full Version : "I'll take you down in my fighter." ... Ummm, come again?

Okay- I totally take that to mean that Apollo will escort Adama in his Viper, Adama flying in a shuttle. Yes?:salute:

(It's related to my diorama query)

No. Adama rode in Apollo's lap in the one-seat Viper.

He found that a bit uncomfortable, hence they began the design for the two-seat Viper, which appeared in Galactica 80.

IIRC: It comes from an idea in the novels, never constructed for TOS, that there could be a jump seat behind the pilot seat in case of emergencies like rescuing a crashed pilot. One of the novels does talk about using it–though nearly a decade after reading them through I cannot tell you which one it is.

No felgercarb?
I figgered Adama rode stuffed into the landing gear space with a pressure suit.:rotf:

Okay- it was a poor choice of words on the part of the writers, but back in the day, I was like, HUH??????;)

Wow, not just the BACK of the bus, but under the seat!!!

Nope—behind the pilot seat. I imagined an actual cockpit was a bit deeper than what the filming model & full size mockup made room for to accomodate a very scrunched passenger space. Think slightly larger space than in mid-90s Honda del Sol rear "seats".

despite there being only the single seat full size mock up, I always thought that the 2 seat Vipers were always there in the background for training purposes. Just like there is a 2 seat version of the F-16 or F/A-18

Dual controls, still combat capible, just with a slightly shorter range.

I can hover with that.

This is one of those things that could be fixed real easy with a slight edit.
Instead of "in My Viper" , Apollo could have said "In a Viper".
Then the 2 seat viper could replace the one seat viper in the SFX shot and scene at Adama's home.

I could buy into the mini-seat behind the pilots seat idea. Perhaps its also used as a storage space accessible if you tilt the pilots seat forward.
We should keep in mind that RMQ's earlier viper design was the Buck Rogers 2 seat Terran fighter.

Big enough for Boxey, maybe. But an ADULT? :rotf:
It'd have to be a bit lower into the fuselage for that.... I guess it's possible....:/:

That was almost a go except Adama wanted to "wheeeeee", all the way home. When Apollo threatened to have Adama ride the wing if he did that, Tigh suggested the jump seat.

Pete -

I always had this "Mad Magazine" illustration in my head with Adama straddling the nose of the Viper....

It's been shown in interviews it was because he wanted to play with the joy stick.

My reasoning for bringing this up was that its possible that the scene was written before the models and props were built. In the earlier versions of the concept drawings the ship that was later recycled into Buck Rogers WAS the colonial viper. That would easily explain why its written that way. The general lack of attention to a detail such as this, or the motivation to fix it before filming is just a sign of the time it was made in. Today many shows employ people whose sole job is to quality check things like this to avoid errors.

for the history buffs out there. The P-38 acutally had a 2nd seat cramed into it in night fighter role with a radar operator. the put a "hump" on the rear of the cockpit and stuffed a really small guy in there to read the scopes. So yes it could have been done. Of course given Adama's size, I don't think of him as a really small guy (not that he was overwieht).

your forgetting the trunk space in front of the cockpit :)

I don't doubt the storage area, or the ability to "just" fit an adult into it for rescue purposes- I just can't see Adama climbing into over the seat! Kind of, you know, less than dignified...

When pondering the thread for the Viper question's bounced around since I first SASW I thought well if anything it's Adama who'd fly and Apollo ride in the boot. He is the boss-man after all.

That and if Apollo wants to be commander one day he has to learn how to do things the hard way. So to speak.

But Apollo said "I'll take you down.."
Not "I'll let your older reflexes guide us through hostile Cylon forces, Dad."

Apollo may have offered (just as my oldest daughter has offered), but it doesn't mean that's how it turned out. Adama, like me, could have made him (her, in my case) ride in back regardless of Cylon (L.A. in my case) traffic

I would have assumed that there is a two-seater Viper model used for recon and flight training - capable in combat, although handling a bit differently from the norm.

Yes that is the logical line of thinking. We never see a 2 seat viper in the original series, only G80 which most fans consider to be a non-cannon bad dream.

I think if the show had a much bigger budget, more creative freedoms, and a lot less time pressure we would have seen 2 seat vipers in TOS.

There are several times a 2 seat viper would probably have been used if available. Another example is in "the young lords" when Boomer and Apollo fly back to Attila to rescue Starbuck the fly a shuttle so as not to draw as much attention as Vipers? do Cylons routinely just ignore shuttles? I think a shuttle would be much easier to detect than a pair of vipers .

That 2-seater was the only part of that mess that made any sense at all.
