Well, here I am at work on my newest Viper, and I'm taking great pains to get it absolutely perfect....

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f110/chrisisall/diorama008.jpg

My question is: I'm lookin' to put in a diorama, and it's being made so the canopy can be either in the open or closed positions, and I'm also prepared to make the landing gear as well, so, what scene should I put it in?
I was playing with the idea of having it parked in front of the destroyed Adama household on Caprica from the opening episode... but I thought I'd ask the Warriors here first to see if anyone had a better idea- something really cool. I also had a notion that having it parked on a futuristic White House lawn might be interesting.

Lay some input on me guys!

Adama household on Caprica from the opening episode

that sounds good

you could park it in my driveway after you add the turbos :-)

That is looking really good. When you ask what scene--?

Film it in green screen and apply it to anything :-) Say you could use a Digital cam and just go to your local freeway- film a little of passing cars- then add your viper cruising along with the other cars- that would be a trip!

I do not have a camera- :-(

LOL, yeah...:rotf:
Nah, this is an art piece. The Viper will, however, be removable.
Ya gotta be able to play with it after ya make it.;)

I like the ruins of Adama's house a lot for this.

I understand I was being a bit silly and humorous.

I actually cannot think of a scene tbh.

I think the ruins is a great idea. While the traditional Viper on launch rails would be a given, the Viper landed with the Adama house in ruins actually tells a story in a single scene. And a very important moment from the original story... actually a turning point.

I would love to see that scene in a physical diorama!

It looks like that's the one I'm doing.

Thanks everyone for the input!
Now gimme a week or two...;)

You know, before I even read the bottom of your first post, I was thinking the landing at Adama's house!! That seems to be the consensus...

Just making the landing gear now... did you ever notice that there are 13 sets of wheels, representing the thirteen tribes of man?

....or am just reading too much into this?

Wow. Viper landing gear from scratch isn't as easy as cake.
( PIE. As easy as PIE.):nervous:

It will be interesting to see how you build the house, we only see a small part of the ruins in the pilot.
That landing gear is looking good, glad to see you using those blueprints. Do you also have the photographs for reference?

Yeah, including one where the nose gear has bent a little, and that showed up on the Joyride toy, if memory serves, heh heh.

And yeah, more of the flattened home will be seen, I think. It depends on how big I want to make the diorama, and if I want to force the perspective or not.

Man, this is slow going. If I had better tools...
I do a little, and WAIT for glue to dry. It's like, well, watching glue dry.
Progress so far:

Okay, unfortunately on the Adama household project, I find that forcing the perspective will suck, and doing it in scale will make it waaaaay bigger than I'm prepared to have the room for.
Sorry folks, I must default to my latest landing bay idea. It'll still rock, just wait a bit.;)

Landing Bay diorama is coming nicely, 22" x 22" is working well, that'd be way too small for the Adama Household thing I had in mind. Should be done in two weeks, weather permitting (crazy wind & cold here; not the friend of peeps who need to spray paint & have no garage...).:errr:

I'm so happy with how my panel separation scribes turned out; I just went to a primo model store for the first time the other day & found all manner of scribe tools, but too late! My "stone knives & bearskins" broken-tip Exacto knife did the job, along with skill, heart & faith! ;)
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f110/chrisisall/diorama017.jpg

Now, as soon as the gorram frackin' freezing temperatures & diethene storms end here, I'll be able to finish!:D

Thanks! Hey Taranis, question: my Son says I should add in a cream colour to the ship, my take is that it only appeared to have that colour in the broadcast way back when- the DVDs clearly show it as light gray to very light gray (depending on the optical wash out of the FX shot) IMO.
Do you think I'm correct, or do you think like my Son that a cream tint should be added in?:?:

gmd3d
February 27th, 2011, 11:22 AM
In deference to you Son. I would go with the light Gray and the creamy colour is the lighting or the optical wash out :).....

here is 2 image that may help ...

Apolloisall
February 27th, 2011, 11:41 AM
I would go with the light Gray

Yeah, thanks Taranis, I thought so. I just threw on the DVD again to make sure, and yep- gray.
See, I have a Viper I made back in '78, and I based the colour off seeing the show, and some pictures in a BSG photo novel (remember those??). My Son really likes that colour.
Here it is next to the new one I finished in January (and it didn't come with a cockpit back then- I hadda scratch build it):
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f110/chrisisall/diorama018.jpg
(The new one wasn't actually finished yet in the above photo, FYI)
You can't see in this photo, but the left wing is missing, I was gonna glue it back on years ago, but my Mother-in-law found it one day, and threw it out!!!!

OH! And I'm in Modelers Miniatures & Magic again. Kurt never said he was gonna use that model!
http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=28276
I didn't think it was anything special, but apparently Kurt thought differently...

Ouch having your mother throwing out the wing .... been there and cried the same tears

I have the BSG photo novel right beside me

Yo DO?? Geeze, I thought I was the only one that had it! I also have some Trek ones.
I also have this:
http://www.amazon.com/official-Battlestar-Galactica-scrapbook/dp/0448162954
It's in perfect condition too, surprising, considering how many times I read & reread it when I got it back then. It was invaluable to me when I made my costume in '79.

I was thinking it would be the usual launch bay scene

Well, I wanted to do something that hasn't been done before, and there's a LOT out there...
For instance, I really like this one:
http://www.modelermagic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/vipertube5.jpg
There's another from Germany that's just insane with detail:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IYihBiTh-cM/TInbJWUciDI/AAAAAAAAAmo/PDFPL44Ok9w/s1600/bmh0w2tg0jwvzvb67.jpg
But none had the view out of the landing bay... hence my cramming a thousand feet into 22 inches.:D

Apolloisall
March 6th, 2011, 04:02 PM
Interesting forced perspective, I love physical optical illusions!

It's not intended to be an accurate 'model' of the bay, but a (hopefully) interesting display for my ultimate Viper model, and THAT is coming along very nicely!
It's all going slowly, but smoothly. I'm not rushing it.

It's going well, I think you're gonna like it.
