Being a bit remiss of late on posting wip pics ...anywhere. So here goes.
A Cylon for a friend.

So that's Lw 10? Nice. Spline-cage modeling I see. You know your stuff :salute:
mikala
January 10th, 2011, 07:36 PM
Thanks... but it is just poly by poly.
Never did try the Spline stuff but will definitely have to some day.
Yup LW10. The VPR alone is worth the upgrade.

Interesting head. One of the cooler "Stylized" Cylons I've seen, Pure Evil !
Titon
January 11th, 2011, 03:58 AM
Nice work sir!
Yes lightwave 10 is well worth the upgrade simply for the VPR. Although i like what they did with the upgrade i wish they would have spent more time in upgrading modelor as well. There isn't much more to choose over the prior 9.6 release. VPR though is awesome.

Thanks Punisher, Titon.
I'd like to see how much more of it I can make within the week.
When possible...real life permitting. "Real Life (pregnant pause here) Why does it happen. More on the 11 o'clock news"

mikala super work on this design ...... I won´t be upgrading to LW10 anytime soon ..... unless I win at the lottery ..... of course I will have to start playing too :)

Greg, here be those two renders I mentioned last night (my time).
First is the 9.6 render, and the second is the 7.5.
It's the same model in both (ie, the one you sent back), so no surfaces were changed on the mesh.
mikala
January 21st, 2011, 09:52 AM
Did you drop an image into Imageworld? In the FX panel?
Darrell Lawrence
January 21st, 2011, 12:10 PM
You referring to the hdri? I used the same image you said to use.
mikala
January 21st, 2011, 12:32 PM
Okay now you can increase it's value in the Imageworld panel and adjust settings in the radiosity settings to taste.
Darrell Lawrence
January 21st, 2011, 01:56 PM
Shouldn't those settings you have in the 9.6 version look the same in the 7.5 version? That's my point. Those two renders are the same settings... etc but look different.
mikala
January 21st, 2011, 02:08 PM
Nope. I've found that scenes can differ greatly between versions.
I need to go in and tweak old scenes to make them look right in the newer versions.
Darrell Lawrence
January 21st, 2011, 05:15 PM
Really? Wow. I have never noticed that before
Learn something new everyday. But then, I need to re-learn a lot too having been away from Lightwave for so long.
I wonder how LW8 will render it now :D
Ok...'nuff of me hijacking your thread.

A wee bit more.
Darrell Lawrence
January 22nd, 2011, 09:12 AM
I bet those are his legs!
Arm work should be cool. Going for the "person underneath in a body suit" look or pure robotic look?
mikala
January 22nd, 2011, 09:55 AM
He's going the hard core metal look. Will be much easier to deform and pose...well everything but the hydraulic hoses.
Darrell Lawrence
January 22nd, 2011, 10:01 AM
I saw on F3D which version this is
Ok... them hoses and animating them... I'm not a character animator, so exactly how will that be done? Will the hoses have to have lots and lots of segments, or does LW 10 allow for good poly bending and so on?
mikala
January 22nd, 2011, 10:13 AM
That....will take a bit of research on my part. I might be looking into Worley Hoser for this one though.
If it stills works in LW10 that is.
Punisher454

I like the direction you are heading with this Centurion. I always thought the "Razor" Centurions maintained the character of the original design.
I have a Centurion model of my own I have occasionally tinkered with for the last two years. I chose to pattern the hips and pelvis after the "Razor" Centurions but have 'C3PO" style knee joints. I wanted to have visible spine and clavical parts, but abandoned it due to concerns of excessive polycounts for the realtime application I 'm working with.
Camt wait to see more.
mikala
January 22nd, 2011, 06:53 PM
I hear you on the whole polycount thing.
This might climb a bit if I'm not careful.

mikala
January 24th, 2011, 06:06 PM
He? HE?
Are you saying that this poor fellow is of questionable gender?
He is a proud eunuch. Sure he may have had issues with steroids in the past but those days are behind him now.
By the way thanks for the kick into making this guy vk08. Been out of modeler for a bit too long now.

Okay was a fun day today. Real meaning not much time to spend on the " iron ape". Late start to the day and a fire in the apartment building a couple floors up made time real scarce.
Anywhooo Made some more gunk and junk for the arms...
I think I'm going to shorten up the whole bicep and forearm areas as they are just bugging the heck out of me.
Apolloisall
January 26th, 2011, 09:32 AM

Looks awesome! I agree that the arms are too long, if you scale the head up a bit it may help.
I really, really like the mechanical design of it!
I'm curious where will the shoulder pivot point be? With my own centurion model I had a lot of trouble positioning the shoulder pivot and preventing the shoulder armor from colliding with area around the neck. I was never happy with it and plan to re-visit it as soon as my shuttle and landing bay stuff is done.
I also like your chrome material, looks a bit weathered and possibly a bit more stainless steel rather than chrome, I like it, its tough!
mikala
January 28th, 2011, 08:03 AM
Thanks.
The pivot for the arm will be located just under the bell armor. So I think I will end up with quite a bit of travel room.

Thanks y'all.
Still have feet, hands and a few odd hoses to do.
With those out of the way I'll call this one done.
I need to build it a weapon but I can't decide of a machine pistol or the M60 type machinegun.

I love this model of cylon! I had a similar design planned for a re-imagined cylon design. Just a thought, instead of leaving the legs and abdomen bare like that, maybe you could wrap black nano-fiber bundles looking like black muscle cords along the skeleton... Like the Crysis nano-suit characters? I thinks that would make this cylon awesome and very menacing. And I would love to have your permission to use this mesh when you're done. This would save me a lot of work!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've kind of put this on the back burner of late. Will keep everything people have mentioned in mind.
I may do a limited release after I'm done doing what I have planned for this not sure yet. First let me get the tin man done. :)
