Late 2002 edition BG news just before New Year's from the pages of SFX MAGAZINE issue Jan 100# Rather than putting this up on Sci-Fi channel and having cowardly trolls attack me and spoil the news or give Languatron something to bitch about, this goes out to the Colonial Fleeter's instead so if you want to spread the news by copy and paste to sci-fi wed boards or fan sites or other information message boards you can! The news is mainly the STARBUCK SEX CHANGE and other news from the script reviews the magazine has given but it also contains news on other elements tipbits of news that just maybe new such as the NEW DIRECTOR OF THE REMADE BG!

SFX REVIEW FROM PAGE 19 issue JAN 100# STRANGE TALES article heading "STARBUCK GETS A SEX CHANGE!" (Note: Between this article is a picture of "Cylon" from the old show)

"Ronald D Moore's New Take On Battlestar Galactica is taking shape with an offical character breakdown composed by the casting people leaked onto the. It includes details of some surprising changes to old favorites and the plot (Watch out, spoilers about!).
Moore's version is a remake, not a sequel. It's being made as a four hour mini series for the US Sci-fi Channel, with the hope that an ongoing series will follow. Last month Moore told us: "The feeling should be that you turn it on and it's Galactica, and you're recognising the icons, but along the way you'll be going 'wow, it's different!" Now we know what he means...

The biggest shock concerns Starbuck, the character originally played by Dirk Benedict. The infamous womaniser is now....a woman! Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. In her late 20s to early 30s, she's described as "tough and ballsy with a certain worldiness", "Undisciplined and rebellious",and having a "take-charge" attitude.
This gender change has had some Galactica fans grumbling, but Ronald D Moore is unrepentant: "Did i know that making Starbuck a woman was going to catch flak? You bet. I also think it's one of the best decisions i make and i'll be more than happy to debate that choice with anyone who feels different,"

Commander Adama and his son, ace fighter pilot Apollo, are still present and correct, but their relationship is very different. Lee Adama ("Apollo" is actually his radio call sign) blame is father for the death of his brother Zak, whom he believes was forced into military service by their dad. As a result, initially they're on speaking terms. There's also a hint of attraction between him and Kara.
One New character is president Laura Roslin. She begins the series as a lowly Education Secretary (in essence a school teacher type), becomin president when most of the cabinet is wiped out in th Cylon attack. She's described as "intelligent, tough-minded, and worried about her own mortality". That'll be because she's suffing from breast cancer. Another big change is that the 12 Colonies are on Kobol (dead birthplace of man in the original show),while Earth is now the mythical human homeland, not a lost colony.

Sly traitor Gaius Baltar still features, but his story is very different. He's the man who designed the Colonies' defence systems, for two years, he's been having an affair with a woman he though was an industrial spy. It turns out she's actually a Cylon agent in humanoid form, sardonic and seductive, she's number six in a series of 12 android Cylons.(maybe they should have called her "Six Of Twelve"). Later on, after being put in charge of research on Galactica, Baltar is troubled by visions of this drop-dead Cylon babe caused by a memory chip secretly implanted in his brain (not like Farscape eh?). We're willing to bet one or two male viewers will be affected in a similar way.

The Breakdown also includes more information on the Cylons, who are apparently "Robots created by humans who turned against their masters and who now live in exile" , Apparently adama fought in a previous war against them. It also mentions that the Cylons are "now humanoid", though this is possibly limited to the series of 12 that number six is part of. Ronald D Moore is keen to reassure us that "there are, in fact non-humanoid classic silver suited Cylons in the piece,"

Predictably, many Battlestar Galactica fans are up in arms, disgruntled that this "re-imagining" is being made, instead of a sequel featuring the original actors.
These new changes have incensed them even further. Moore has replied: "Everyone out there needs to take a deep breath and relax. [The Character breakdown] is neither a synopsis, a character analyisis, nor a fair overview of the project."

So.....radical but invigorating reinvention or throwing the baby out with the bath water? You'll be able to se for yourself soon enough. Production is slated to start in March in Vancouver with MICHAEL RYMER (Queen Of The Damned) as director. US transmission is planned for winter 2003. SFX

Too true OWD, when every magazine gets a review done and the letters start pouring in to them. Then lets hope there is one last fight left in this thing. I for one hope Moore get the BG rug pulled out from him the same way it happen to DeSanto then it may take longer to revive but it would be worth it, oh yes..alot worth it!

Moore's disrespect is so blatant he needs a good kick up the backside and horse whupping just to wake him to the fact HIS WAY IS WRONG PLAIN AND SIMPLE and i would gladly take it up with him since he wants to have it out with anyone who disagrees with him on his foolish remake quest WHICH HE DAMN WELL KNOWS WE NOR ANYONE ELSE WITH AN I.Q. above 2, want a remake of BG!
See Michael Faries review and answers to the ideas of Ronald D Moore Vs Original BG. Of the CRAPPY script you've done Moore, of how big Battlestar Galactica is to us and the average Joe let alone, hardcore BG fans and casual sci-fi fans "YOU TRAINED CIRCUS APE!!!..."

Moore's about alright, just sly about how he goes about it thats all? It's questionable if the "RonDMoore" handle on the sci-fi Bboard is him but, he's about alright lets remember "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled is convincing people that he didn't exist!" just a powerful gut feeling as human hunches go!

See more we know more about metaphor in BG and real life than you do go figure. :naughty:

I don't suppose anyone read the "Dreamwatch" small snipet of BG info yet? Well by now it should be sold in all places by now so, if anyone else besides me has it, put down the small but average BG information out to everbody who wants it! I would but hey, if you saw how small it is you'll have doubts about getting it for that reason too?

Thank KJ. I am surprised about the Director they have chosen. If RDM is on the BBoard posting, he could be TrekLord. TrekLord seems like the proper handle for someone who thinks highly of his work for Star Trek.

However if Devin is not RDM and we end up watching the mini-series and see Devin's name in the credits we would look kind of stupid. If we make the wrong assumptions, then Bonnie and her bunch can easily call us a bunch of paranoids and take us less seriously. Devin may not be RDM. Keep that mind.
