Here is an update on project I am working on.

Just mostly messing around with scaling and adding just a tad of detail work to see were I am going to go with this.

There is some green stuff highlighting some of the areas in this shot. This will be removed. And yes that's a tiny viper in the scene. Just there for scaling purposes.

Here is another shot of the launch tubes and a Viper along side.

This one just gives a small idea of the scale of Galactica.

I notice you have openings in the sides of the landing bays above the level of your launch tubes. Do you plan to put laser turrets there?

I notice you have openings in the sides of the landing bays above the level of your launch tubes. Do you plan to put laser turrets there?

Yep, I plan to put some turrets in those spots.

I added some hull plating and lights to the landing bays.

Here is an update of what I've done.

http://oqudnw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pt6icmKlsE3MYwkdg21velR17Q0NHQxjUTEygXNIYEnkMuY8vv1_4UbaoSm75Ujjar2ewUwmk6Jl1yZuuLPhfE0gy-QJxMbCl/GalacticaX5.jpg

Next shot shows some hull detail and Viper for scaling.

This shot shows galactica... More work still needs to be done, but this is some of the detail work I've added. And yes... I modeled the Galactica to have opening in both the front and back of landing bay. Maybe work that in to a story or something.

OK, here is my latest update.

Did some fancy hull plating and added some laser canons as promised.

I also threw in the lights for engine.

Still not done with her yet. But i've been doing some experimenting with hull plating and such.

Very tricky stuff.

Anyhew... Here is the new test results.

Well here is a new sequence I put together... It needs some more editing, but I just wanted something for folks to see.
I want to film some stuff with live actors and green screen, but the green screen thing is going to take some time until I can get some resources together.
Any suggestions anyone?

I created a CG Model of a BaseShip and currently working on modeling a Raider. Should be done with it in the next week or so... Here are some samples.

Well, I decided to start over from scratch my model of Galactica.

I'm going to try and add better detail and actually try to model her more accurately.
But trying to juggle a full time job and being a parent of two, kinda cuts into my fun time.
I work all day on computers, just to come home and do it again. You get were I'm going.
Maybe I should move my computer to the garage. I can then have my Cigar and model at the same time. Hmmmm:/:
Anyhew, I sort of quickly created my new CG Galactica.

http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_Gal2011c.jpg (http://s833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/?action=view&current=Gal2011c.jpg)

I'm currently working on the detail of the hull plating and all the little things that go around the hull.
I've learned a few new texturing techniques... So I will be appling those as I go.

She may not be as accruate as I would like, but due to time constraints and me being impatient and wanting to animate right away.
Maybe, one day, I can be a big time movie producer... I can then consentrate of modeling full time. Whew, that would be cool!:rotf:

I know how you feel trying to find some quality time to sit down at the computer and do modeling. I personally use the hours of time usually spent (wasted) watching mindless TV shows ( excluding BSG of course) to work on my model. You have some good ideas on your models, don't rush the project.

Your right about it not being accurate... I googled some blueprints and just saved a couple of the blueprints that first popped up. and used those as reference.

Yes... I'll be adding more pipes... I got hung up on the lighting... I was trying to figure out how I wanted to go about lighting the scene.

Setting up the pipes is tricky... I really had to figure out were I wanted to put them to give that busy look, but also I want to give them a functional look as well.

For now I'm just using omni lights... I thought about using volume light to give it a bit of effect, but I'm still debating on what lighting to use.
I picked Omni for now because it was quick and the shadows it casts reminded me of when I used to work in a garage.

More than likely I'll be throwing in some more lighting and detail. I just wanted to through something in for now.

Thanks for the compliments and thanks for the advise you gave regarding the greebles and what not.

I too have made the launch tubes sit one deck below the recovery deck on my battlestar. It only makes sense. How else does one explain the long launch tubes that seem to sit on the same level as the recovery deck? Your battlestar decks look awesome.

One area in which we differ on our approach is that while you have the landing control area set inboard on the recovery deck ....looks like it terminates at where the troop conveyor tube runs along the lower axis of the ship. Nice approach, Matador.

For me, my control area sits just above the entrance of the recovery deck.

In any case, very, very well done on your works thus far.
I am about to finish my Colonial Viper, which will make about the fourth or fifth model I've done in Blender in just the last week.

Thanks martok...

I've always debated in my own mind were the control tower should be... I got the idea from aircraft carriers and plus I saw Taranis's version and I decided to stick with it.
I always figured the troop conveyor would run in the area in the middle of the ship. That funny cross section that you can barely see. But was there...
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_galactica_10arrow1.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/galactica_10arrow1.jpg) Although this was actually used to hide the support for the acutal model. I always imagined it served as a way to move stuff from one end of ship to another. So I kepted it in my model.

I used that section in my model and this will be used for the troop transport and also how they move the ships from one side of Galactica to the other.
That tunnel will eventually lead to a storage bay... A safe place to keep extra vipers, shuttles, and spare parts in the belly of Galactica.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes I ageree, I'm currently trying to model the galactica interior, and thats what I have in that area of the ship. I have a very large passageway that could accommodate shuttlecraft moving both directions. near the top of this lateral support is what I call the "warrior tube" tunnel. I see this as a way to move ships from side to side as well as the transport of large amounts of cargo and equipment. On something like the galactica I would expect some very large pieces of equipment would occasionally need to be replaced. A ship this large would also need some large cargo hold areas.

We seem to have the same thoughts in regard to that big cross beam that runs under the ship....I thought I'd seen somewhere that the superstructure directly underneath the battlestar's main hull was the pilot/troop barracks....so we are definitely on the right track...or at least, on a common track. :)

Keep up the great work, guys. :salute:

Cool, gload I'm not the only one that noticed the cross section.
It used to always catch my eye and wondered if this was supposed to be noticed by the original special effects guy or if they were trying to desguise it.
Either way, it always made sense to me that it was some type of access tunnel between the mid ship and other landing bay.

Can't wait to do some modeling of the access tunnel.

Hey Martok, I was just checking out iclone. Is that a good program for creating characters.

I want to create pilots and crew members for my scenes. Is that program compatible with 3ds max?

I've been shopping around for a program to create people fairly quickly so that I don't have to spend too much time modeling them.

Any suggestions?

The little corridor(tube) that the pilots take to rapidly get to the launching bays is VERY small compared to the size of this external feature of the hull. Its BIG, the warrior tube only occupies a TINY fraction if this.

I am placing the pilots quarters in the forward part of the central block of the ship. these "lower" areas I am using for cargo and equipment.

iClone can use models created in 3DS MAX, but you have to buy a second program that can convert .3DS models into iClone models, called 3DEXchange (another Reallusion product).

3DEXChange can convert .obj and .3DS files into iClone usable models, and it can also take iClone models and characters and convert them into .obj to export to external 3D programs that use .obj files.

The thing is, with iClone, you have base characters (characters that have a basic casual clothing mesh for which to design costumes) already in the program. You usually get a male (Jack) and a female (Jane). With iClone, you can create their costumes (different costume types may require different clothing meshes/bases to be purchased from their Backstage store site). You can also morph any face you wish onto the iClone characters directly in the program. You can take a photograph of anyone(as long as it is a good, straight into the camera, expressionless photo) and graft that face onto the avatar. (I use a lot of celebrity likenesses for my characters. For the role of new character Lt. Shaen, I used Natalie Portman's image. For Sheba, I used Eliza Dushku's. And for Athena's I used Ellen Page.) Thankfully, they're lifelike, but not so hyper-accurate that you can say: "Hey, that's so-and-so!" Even if their photo is slightly off angle, you can make adjustments. iClone is an extremely flexible character design and animation tool.

An external 3D modeling program is best used for fashioning props and accessories for your characters. I mean, you can make props for your characters in iClone, but they end up being block models for the most part. With a powerful external editor like .3DS Max or Blender, you can make much more detailed and accurized props. I used Blender to create the Viper pilot's helmet (my iClone version looked okay, but you could tell it was thrown together), and the chromium armor for the Cylon Centurions. I had made Centurions in iClone, but they looked too cartoony...at least my current ones look a little more menacing, and a little less like the characters in the "Money for Nothing" video by Dire Straits. LOL! All I did was fashion the armor (I converted/exported a male character from iClone over to Blender so that I could properly shape the armor, and then converted/exported the armor back into iClone--again, for conversion from one to the other, you need 3DEXchange-- and applied a reflection texture, and attached the armor to a solid black male nude character since that would represent the skin tight wrap underneath the armor, I'll do the same thing when I get down to creating Imperial Stormtroopers.) When you attach an object to a character, that object immediately is considered an "accessory", and you can save it as such in iClone. When all your armor is in place and linked, you can save the avatar as a Cylon Centurion.

I also plan on making actual gunbelts and better looking blaster pistols for the Colonial Warriors.

Anyhoo...that's my thesis on the benefits of making characters within iClone. :)

Oh, absolutely....there's no way the tunnels are THAT large. :)

But that is also a good idea there regarding the underside superstructure on the Galactica, being a cargo storage unit. :) Then again, it's quite possible that the pilot barracks and cargo storage are all in the same superstructure. I mean, that area alone is just way too large to entirely be barracks for the ship's entire compliment of fighter pilots. :)

Have you ever looked at the Star Trek Constitution class heavy cruiser(TOS enterprise) deck plans? they are mainly loaded with crew quarters everywhere, along with briefing rooms, rec rooms, gymnasium, transporter rooms etc... right out to the edge of the hull. On those plans there is very little internal volume of the ship taken up by equipment and structure. I picture the Colonial Battlestar as being exactly the opposite. Mostly hardware, with areas for crew placed in where they can fit. Like a battleship, aircraft carrier or submarine.
I also think that the purpose of a battlestar is not exactly the equivalent of an aircraft carrier. I picture it as a multi-role do-everything ship. The battlestar deploys fighters like an aircraft carrier, but it then can directly engage enemy capitol ships, like a battleship. I believe the battlestar would also be used for transporting/deploying several thousand troops. We see the same thing in star-wars and even the "Starship Troopers" movie.

There are a few techniques on how to do this and I'm trying them all. I'm not used to modeling clothing on characters, so this is a new step in my evolution.

If you have max 2011 (I think maybe 2010 also) it has incorporated "CAT" the character animation toolkit. It was a thirdparty character animation tool, now part of max. I think it will do most of what bones pro will.
So far my very limited character modeling experience has taught me That good edgeloops are VERY VERY important for good deformations. Problem areas are the shoulders/armpits, elbows, hips/buttocks/crotch and knees.
Character modeling is the hardest, but i can tell youre a bold modeler and seem to be improving very fast. I'm sure you already know but you can find real nice human reference images at 3d.sk.

When I was a kid I used to love making star ships... I would take the left over parts from my model kits... Like the plastic molding and melt them and use them to make pipes and greebles... That was fun.

Most of them got destroyed because I was busy making my home made star wars movies.

Anyhew, back to CG, I'm working with a modifier in max called "cloth". You add this to your mesh and it simiulates how fabric would react to whatever it's collision target is... In this case, the body of the character. There are different fabrics that you can tell it the mesh will be... Cotton, leather, polyseter... The program will try to mimic how it would react when the charactor is moved.

I'm working on adding the bi-ped skeleton to the character, then skin it. Hopefully I'll have something to show you guys in the next day or so.

It's only a few seconds long, but took about 12 hours to render. The sequence seems pretty simple, but animating a character is a lot of work. Just creating the character, skinning, then merging him into scene took a lot of trial and error. But now that I've figured the best approach for this. I will be able to create more bodies in the scene, doing background stuff.

OK... Been a while since I posted anything. I took a short break from my project. But I'm back.

I realized I never added anthing on the nose of my Galactica... So I finally started adding some stuff to fix this.
I borrowed some ideas from the new Galactica series... Mostly just the communications mast and some other greebles.

Looking really good. Can I play with it? :D

btw I posted BSG TOS is back on NBC.

I also noticed, and do not recall seeing many outside lights on Galactica.
But there were a few scenes I have seen on the NBC, that I do not recall
seeing in any recent episodes I have watched.

am unsure if they have added, re edited or embellished some of the footage.

And to my recollection and of models seen, I do not for the life of me remember seeing any "outdoor" lights on the ship. But I did on NBC
channel.

Yeah, I agree, I don't remember any lights or beacon lights on galactica, only the lights coming out of windows and the main engines.
I'll probably add some to my version, just for cool effects and also adding lights to the landing pods.

I don't remember hearing about TOS Galactica being back on NBC. I'll have to research that.

Well here is my version of an opening sequence, if I ever got to produce my own Galactica show.

I put together some footage from difference scenes I've been working on. This is still a work in progress.

There is a quick scene that shows the guns moving around. But I haven't had a chance to add the laser effects.

Eventually I will refine the scenes with better shots of Galactica. But for now. Just pretend it's a Thursday night and your sitting down to watch another great episode of Battlestar Galactica.

Thanks for the compliments and for watching. It's crazy how much work is involved in creating scenes that are only a few seconds in length.

But it's all worth it in the end.

Like I mentioned, I'll be doing more refinements and putting some other scenes together, then adding effects... It's the rendering time that's the killer. A couple of those shots took two days to render.

Regarding the formation flying... There is a really cool tutorial on youtube that gives instructions on how to create that scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGcToM_DyKU

I used almost the same exact instructions to create that formation flying. The tutorial is for 3ds max and the guy talks really quick. So you'll probably end up pausing and rewinding a lot to take notes.

Once again, thanks for watching... There is more to come. :salute:

And don't I know it- render times on some can kill your motivation LOL.

Took me a moment to figure out it was a video too :D

Really loved those interior shots. The Engine Exhaust lights (vipers)were too cool too. The launch bay launching. All great.

MAkes me want to keep making CGI BSG shorts. I really need to learn more to create better scenes.

Also, watched some of that tube link. Have 3ds but have not really used it or get into it, I cant get past all the symbols. But the basic principals are
the same as c4d, I just think C4d is easier to learn and use.
Not to mention it loads up 10x faster and typically renders a lot faster
even on this 8 year P4 Dell.

Again, Nice stuff, should be on tube, vimeo, daily imo.

I'm currently working on refiniing my title sequence.

In one of the scenes in the sequence, there is a shot of the laser canons firing.
all you see is movement, but no lasers.

Well I'm currently working on adding that.

One frame at a time. The process is tedious, but I'm getting there.

Am curious, 1 frame at a time? how are you doing this?
app? that seems too tedious.

I have been using standard emitters (with a shaped visible light)in C4d- have not tried using AE for it but am also looking into using the Thinking particle system also in C4d. I am still just beginner at this but doing it 1 frame at a time?

That really just does not seem to be an effective way of doing it. are other ways also using geometry.

I'm using a program called FXlab Pro.
http://fxhome.com/effectslab-pro

I exaggerated a bit... It's more like setting start and stop postions and then going back a few frames to make sure that the laser effects goes the correct direction.

It's a post production type thing.

I thought about just modeling laser beams and putting them into the scene, but I really like the laser effect that the fxLb pro produces. Plus I can match it up with some of the lasers I use for my live action shots.

Honestly I haven't really done much research into creating laser fire for my scene. I'm sure there is a much easier method... I'm just using tools I currently have an know.

lol, I am sure there are easier ways than I am using too-
am experimenting with the thinking particles and I just now think I got
it set. with these, they will emit lights(lasers) exactly where the null-emitter is, unlike the regular emitter, was random and increased speed really made it hard to use.

I try and do it all in app (c4d) till I learn of using post effects or compositing methods. for myself, making it all in 3d in a physical way
is really the only way I know how to do it.

so this way no matter how the object moves, or whatever the speed of it or the speed of particles it will be right on. will have a vid- or gif on Galactica Max thread soon of it.

have not heard of that app.

keep it up. look forward to more.

Consider it artistic expression...

Honestly, it was an accident... I was actually experimenting with texturing and I sort of fell in love with the look and stuck with it.

I thought I had seen this on the original model, but I must have just imagined it.

I just wanted to put my own spin on it. If I was making a serious TV series, I probably would focus more on the actual detail. I do plan to make some short web-a-sodes and maybe have some of my friends do some green screen stuff. But all in due time.:salute:

Thanks QueenHunter.

If I had all the time in the world I would love to spend more time on detail, but working full time and raising kids, kinda cuts into my hobby time.

Maybe some day I'll get discovered and Glen Larson, or whoever runs the show these days will call me and say "Hey, we want you to make a show for us." I could then round up a team and make things look sweeter than sweet.

But, for now, I'm just throwing things together, because I love animating my scenes. Plus I'm putting together a library of scenes to use to create my web-a-sodes.

Thanks for the feed back. I really appreciate it. That scene took days of trial and error.

Animating the approach wasn't too difficult, but adding the camera shake was a hole other ball game. I really had to tinker with the program to get the objects around the camera, not to shake with the camera and vise-versa.

Once I figured it out, I then had to fine tune the amount of random shake. Lots and lots of trial and error.

The scene is still rendering... So it probably won't be done until sometime next week. I wish I had access to the render farm ILM or Pixar uses. What is really slowing things down is the fraking motion blur. It's killing me, but without it the scene just looks too fake and digital. Motion blur really enhances the look and feel.
Like in this scene I made a while back.

Hello all,

I'm working on a longer landing scene with some shots with internal and external views of the cockpit. Recently I wanted to add some landing lights and small other details to help the scene out.
I've redone my landing sequence from inside the cockpit. This took about three weeks to render this scene out. Maybe if I rendered the scene smaller, may help... Anyhew, here is what came out of the oven.

martok2112
September 13th, 2012, 09:29 PM
Interesting question.

Although we have had some test aircraft that had rather stubby wings, I don't think they were "take off" capable. They almost always (as far as I know) had to be deployed from larger aircraft.

I don't think a Viper in its current physical configuration could fly, at least atmospherically. In space, you can have a box and make it travel with maneuvering jets, but in atmo it would be about as flight worthy as an elephant.

I wondered because some planes, e.g. the F-117, look totally unlikely to fly, but do so.
Just curious.

martok2112
September 14th, 2012, 08:12 AM
Hehe ..... good point. :)

In truth, at least the F-117 still seems to possess the characteristics of an airfoil...albeit, a singular foil (like a flying wing).

A Colonial Viper, at least to me (and yes I am FAR from an aerodynamics expert) just looks a bit too.....blocky, and has too small of a wingspan to begin with.

But, like I said, we did have some test aircraft (IIRC) that had very stubby wingspans....but, they still had airfoil characteristics.

Again, I am far from an aerodynamics expert, so, as with all things, take my opinion with a grain of salt....or just take the whole durned shaker. :)

Basically for the viper to fly properly you'd have to taper the leading and trailing edges of the wings and add a forward Canard. I think were still dealing with an aircraft that would have a ridiculously high landing speed, even more than an F104.
You dont really need to have an airfoil that generates lift to fly, especially at higher speeds, but of course you trade off low speed capabilities and high G turns.

Interesting points about flyability of the vipers.
I asked the same questions years ago to my next door neighbor who is (retired) an
Aviation engineer. original viper would never get of the ground
the anhedral angle of the wings are too steep, wing area is to small to generate
enough lift. the drag caused by the engines and the nose section would be far to great
for the the lift generated by the wings to over come.

If it could fly, the engines would need to be insanely powerful with a huge airfoil camber
and thickness. power generated by the top engine wouldn't be as effective because
the intake is restricted by the cockpit

take off speed would be in excess of 500kph. Landing and stall speeds just as high.
Without canard wings, as it approaches take off speed would flip over on its back
like an F1 car because of the taper on the nose section. that would push the nose up.

If your interested, when i get home I'll find pictures of the vipers i came up with
to make them flyable.

edit: original vipers center of gravity is about a meter behind the cockpit behind the
root of the leading edge of the wings

EDIT-- What about Croad's fighter, from TLP? Flatter wings.

Andromeda

I did ask about VTOL :-) when i was looking at streamlining the original shuttle.

Most of what i asked and what was told was all on the harrier.
looking at how the exhaust is vectored by the nozzles moving up and down
and how it was stable on it's roll (z) axis with vectored vanes in the exhaust
nozzles.

Croads fighter looking at it, looks more flyable, It would have the same
problems as the viper. one less engine reduces the drag, however the wings
are a problem. if that wing had a typical airfoil cross section, airflow to the
engines would be disrupted or restricted because the engine is on top of the
wing. Also the engines are slightly recessed into the fuselage and that
would restrict airflow as well.

Have a look at Learjets, engines on the side on pylons away from the
fuselage.

When air passes over a wing the pressure drops as it goes over the top,
air pressure under the wing remains the same. that's what gets the plane off
the ground. Having an engine on top of a wing, where air pressure is lower
and more disturbed means the engines are sucking in a lot less air and
sometimes even cause a flame out.

That's why passenger jets (eg 737) have the engines underneath on pylons jutting forward of the wing.

Croads fighter could be flyable, if the engines where under the wings, nose
tapered, and tail made taller. and wingspan a little larger, Angle of the wings
wouldn't be a problem there about the same as the space shuttle.

Edit: something else i thought of, you could leave the engines on top, put them on little pylons
so that they are above the wing and way from the fuselage, like and A-10 for example.

I've been using pictures from both the new series and old series. I'm trying to fuse them to create my version of a viper.

I've made a few leaps in my modeling technique... So I'm applying those to create this new version of a viper.

OK, so here are the last two shots I made of my Viper...
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_viper7.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/viper7.jpg) http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_viper8.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/viper8.jpg)

I say last two... Meaning that I've made a leap to a new 3d modeling and rendering program called Lightwave.

This was a very hard decision... I actually lost sleep over it. But it really came down to cost value. The program I was using, 3ds Max is a very good program, but is missing many elements that you can get out of the box with lightwave... Many things I need in max (plugins) are just very expensive and I'm not a big production house and can't afford it.

Lightwave offers them, built in, and for a better price. Problem is I have to learn a whole new way of modeling and animating. It's like spending 5 years learning to speak German and then switching to speak Portuguese. But with a tight budget, I had to make the switch.

One good thing is that I was able to import my Viper model into lightwave, but have to re-texture it.

Here are some samples of lightwave:
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_LW_viperTest3.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/LW_viperTest3.jpg) http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_LW_viperTest4.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/LW_viperTest4.jpg)

Lightwave is also the program used in the new Galatica series and firefly.

I will probably finish up my space battle scene with Max, but will eventually switch over to lightwave.

So I've been getting myself pretty familiar with Lightwave. It has been very a very challenging change from modeling in 3ds Max to Lightwave. But it is something I must do.

I'm re-creating my viper... Although I can import my model from Max into Lightwave. I need the practice... So here is what I have done so far.

Just a little update.

One of the cool tools in Lightwave is the Stencil option, which is one of the options in the "Drill" tool.

I'm able to create hull detail that I would have had major problems with in Max. I know this may look silly, but it's a huge step for me.

http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/Lightwave%20CG/th_test_Box2.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/Lightwave%20CG/test_Box2.jpg)

Yeah, I'm still working with Blender, but it serves me....shoot, for being a free program, it works wonders, and I haven't even scratched the surface of just what all Blender can do.

Thanks Martok... I gave blender a try, but I just couldn't get used to the right-click thing. I'm too spoiled with the Left click.

I've got another buddy who is trying Blender out. For a free program, you can't beat it.

But after much back and fourth and looking at a lot of work being done in Lightwave for shows like Galactica, Firefly, and Hunger games. I felt it was a good investment.

Lightwave has an awesome Render engine built right in. Another big selling point.

Anyhew... I'm making a new "Lightwave Version" of Galactica. I could import my already made Mesh from Max, but I want to see how long this takes me.

I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way but I'm a geek for these sorts of details. Speaking from ignorance. Did the original model have pipes running along the base like that? It looks good but it seems a bad choice for a ship you expect to get shot at. Not trying to be an ass but I always try to figure out what the details on these models would do and this sort of detailing seems like something that would be ideal on a civilian ship but might be out of place on a warship.

In the larger scheme of things, ... back in the day when I was doing CG, the Lightwave modeler was a dream. I used to find modeling in it very relaxing. I'd imagine its only gotten better in the last few years.

Really nice detailing of hoses, etc. on the viper above.

All my best,

Well Let's look at a production model of the Original Galactica.
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_Galactica_Pipes3a.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/Galactica_Pipes3a.jpg)

Yep... Pipes!;)

Let's then look at Maudib's verison, (which is the best highly detailed and completely accurate to the studio version I've seen so far)...
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_Galactica_Pipes1a.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/Galactica_Pipes1a.jpg) http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/th_Galactica_Pipes2a.jpg (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz252/danakinobi/CG%20Galactica%20Project/Galactica_Pipes2a.jpg)

Oh yeah... More pipes.s:cool:

Now, having exposed pipes like that may have not been the smartest idea for the Colonials. It probably would explain why the entire fleet was destroyed so easily... Also, flying around in a viper with no pressure suite or mask didn't make a lot of sense either, but it made for a great show and we all love the costumes...
The Galactica from the new series would be a better bet, because everything is all tucked away behind armor...

But one thing both ships had was lots of Bulky armor, heavy defense system, firepower, and Vipers! Everything was Reduntant and by-passable. Like Star Trek and the Auxiliary systems.;)

My version of Galactica is very different and is intended to be that way... I did not want to copy anybody else's work... Sort of how the Enterprise from the new Star trek is the same but different than the original movie version.
My landing bays are open on both ends.

I am still very new to Lightwave... After working with Max for almost 6 years, switching over has not been easy.

Thanks for checking out my post.:salute:

Wow, how unobservant am I? The Galactica universe ships were always known for pipes but I'd always regarded them as something along the lines of our own warships. It wasn't until I saw this without the other gurnies that I noted just how large of a target the old girl had. Even worse, I never noted the lower set was painted red.

Agree with the Maudib version. Some fantastic work.

Best of luck with this version.

On your shot of the engine section it looks like you have 2 vertices sharing a plane. If you look at the roco tank you will see a "brighter" area around a disk detail on the roco tank you built. Either that or you have a different surface name for that area.

Open your statistics panel, select polygons by hitting the space bar, then look at the "2" vertices selection within the panel. See if it show's more than "2" vertices within the polygon's. If it does select the vertices within the panel and delete them. All from within modelor of course.

[QUOTE=Matador;311273]I see... Must have been drinking a bit too much Ambrosa... :D

/QUOTE]

What! What? What¿ you found the keys to the Ambrosa Locker, what that BST lost in his pocket
on the last day of worshipping of the knotted string.

Has the mystery been solved ?

can we now stop the wasteful worship of the wooden foot.

I'm getting closer to finishing the Hull detail and will perhaps start filming some flyby's. In the meantime, here is where I am.

There are a lot of things I'm still working on, but I just wanted to take a step back and see how it is looking.

OMG you made the switch to LW  that was unexpected :)
I fully understand why and makes perfect sense.
Looking good and coming a long way since I last looked.

Yes, I made the switch... Trust me it was not an easy decision. Lots of tossing and turning. While thinking it over.

But it all came down to cost... LW is a much cheaper program and comes with a bunch of stuff right out of the box. With Max, it is expensive, plus I would have to get a bunch of other plug-ins, which are even more expensive.
So after mulling this over, I made the switch.
It was like learning to walk all over again. But I'm getting the hang of it and I'm pretty excited with what I can do.
One of the biggest selling points too, was that LW was offering Poser Pro 2012 when you bought LW.

I was able to create this scene.

The Character I created in poser... The bottles and other stuff was modeled in Lightwave. I exported the character into Lightwave layout...

Happy Saint Patrick's day everyone!
