View Full Version : The Unofficial Annual GALACTICA Convention

ok, This is an Idea that came up in the Galacticruise discussion.

The idea is, since the "official" conventions or get togethers come every 5 years, we pick an event that happens every year and consistantly has a Galacitica presence. Then we try to get as many Galactica fans as possible to attend. We plan a get together dinner, and or mixer, we could even go as far as picking an official bar in the area to hang out at after hours.

Also, for those with Galactica Costumes, this would be a place we can get together in ourt costumes and organize. Formign a "Squadron" was mentioned in the original thread. I'm all for this, seeing how I expect to have a costume done within the next 5 months.

As of now, the leading contender for the convention is San Diega Comic Con. (there are others, so I specified)

Most of the ideas I've mentioned before have worked out for the 501st Legion (star Wars costuming) When you have enough members attending, you can split the costs for everything between the members, and the more going, the more likely a Bar will allow you to hang a banner stating it's the official bar. This happened at Star Wars Celebration 3, which was in Indianapolis. A local bar allowed the 501st to hang banners inside and outside, to let people know it was the place to hang.

The 501st also hold dinners at just about every event they attend as a group. When celebs go with the members, (by personal invite, or if you have contact info, you prearrange it) the Celebs Tab is spilt among the members.

SO, this is the place to add ideas, and start the planning to make this happen.

PLEASE spread the word through other BSG boards you are on.

Let's make this happen :)

This sounds pretty awesome to me. I'll try to spread the word as far as I can!

Would we be able to have the costumed squadron a part of fleets? The Colonial Defense force is mostly new show fans with a bunch of smaller squadrons. Should we just make one big squadon...and since this place has been around should we just claim the original "blue squadron" title or come up with something new?

The 501st usually have a hotel that they stay at correct? We definitely have time to plan this before Comic Con '09. Would we want to have a table at the con?

Food for thought...:salute:

I'm a bit hungry, so I'll bite ;)

Ok, as far as the 501st and hotels go, the only time thre is an "official" hotel, is big SW centered events that LFL has a say in. Somethign the size of Star WArs Celebration. The way that works is LFL asks the 501st for a Volunteer pool, Basically Free, in costume Con Volunteers. People to watch lines, check badges, Escort Celebs to and from panels. LFL is large enough to get "discounted" room rates for people volunteering. OUtside of this, it depends on the con. the smaller local cons will usually be held in a Hotel, so that becomes the "official" hotel. With people branching out as the hotels fill, or rates at nearby hotels.

An example is, Farpoint, a convention in Maryland. It's held at a hotel, and that hotel offers "Con rates" for rooms at the hotel, I stayed across the street, and paid a bit more, but the hotel was offering more (free breakfast)

Cons like SDCC and Dragon Con in Atlanta, the 501st just scrambles for hotels and uses the group as a roommate finder. (6 people to a hotel room isn't an uncommon thing lol)

Ok, as for the other questions ;)

I think this might just be a great place to organize from. IF we have the backing of the mods here, What we'd need to start is a dedicated forum, and to decide what the "squadron" will contain. As mentioned there are places for TNS costuming. Colonial Defence Forces and I know of SciFiHero.Net have strong TNS costuming sections. (I'm a member of SciFiHero.Net, and am a regional Team leader - Stargate costuming) So I'd lean towards making it Original Series based. Since this is what seems to be lacking. Next step would be finding leaders to mod the forum. I'd suggest 2 threads. A public one, and a private planning one.

Then we start gathering the costumers and potential costumers. Get resources out there, post them, post people who can do custom work, Line up people who's be willing to do custom work.

When I was in the Rebel Legion (Rebel version of the 501st) I was Legion COmmander, and I started the Starfighter COmmand Detachment. I've always been a fan of multiple, local squadrons. But with Rebel pilots, we had a larger pool of costumers. So, to start off, I'd say 1 Squadron. Come up with a logo for it (remember, we technically wouldn't be aboard the Galactica, so it doesn't have to be a color variation of Blue Squadron. (I'd also say not be Blue Squadron, since none of us will ever be Boomer, Sheba, Starbuck, etc. Those positions belong to the actors, who we can then "Induct" into our group as honorary Warriors. If the group picks up and we increase the number of warriors and Bridge Crew costumers, we can create other ships or squadrons for local areas.

Another Idea would be a costuming guide of some sort. for now it can be a collection of screen caps and other pictures of all the costumes. The Colonial ones, Civilian ones, Cylons (I'd also suggest including BOTH sides of the 1000 Yahren War, Instead of having 2 groups created later)

Added food, and all replies are welcome :)

Should we put the "official" con to a vote? Not that I know how to make that happen. First up we should nominate some cons. Personally I'm all for SDCC, but its right near by so I'm a bit biased. There is always a Galactica panel with Richard though, and a big turn out. Herb Jefferson is also there every year.

I agree that this should be a strictly original series club. TNS already has its thing. The squadron name should also be put to a vote...once we have some ideas! :D

A pattern for the uniform is being worked on as we speak. I've commisioned our very own "Mieal Deneb" to make a uniform so we could get a pattern out of it (aside from getting a uniform made by an awesome seamstress!).

I also agree that we should start off with representation on both sides. It won't be fun without any Cylons! That might mean tracking the ones I see at the cons down and convincing them to join up!

Also, this site opperates very much like what we are talking about with a pilot roster and all. It would be cool, but if it has to be a separate entity thats alright as well.

Sounds good, if we do have to find a new home, I am sure I can get somethign going on the SciFiHero.net forums. But this would definately be a first choice. :)

After Monolith and I met up last month I am looking forward to see this happen.

I am definitely getting my colonial warrior uniform for this hopeful event. My biggest challenge is getting the boots...so far the boots alone cost as much if not more than the colonial uniform and accessories.

"We're getting a request for Orange and Purple squadrons to join us..."

"Orange and Purple...??"

As much as I'd love to go to SDCC, it just isn't possible for me (money stinks when you don't have it:thumbdown).

But, I'd LOVE to join the costuming squadron! I'll eventually have a full Warrior's costume. I already have replica boots, one set of collar insignia pins, one arm patch, a pistol belt I'll be dyeing, and fabric to sew my costume.

Okay that's it! When is the next CON here in So. Cal? Ready or not I think we need to make a presence there and I'll do what I can to help with a booth.

My Klingon Ship for KAG has been asked to attend a Visual Arts fundraiser in May (the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend from 9am to 4pm) and this would be a great time to just hang out and dress up.

Now I will be in my Klingon Uniform BUT we will also have a booth that we will gladly share with what we are trying to do here...if anyone would be interested. It costs nothing to attend but they are taking donations to help with the visual arts programs for the city school. Our group is donating at least $25 but it is not required. Last year we were not able to give anything and we still went out and had a blast with the kids, (both young and old...lol)

This is the most soonest gathering I can think of...in August I will be in Las Vegas for the Star Trek CON and in November I know the LOSCON in Los Angeles will be going but it is during the Thanksgiving weekend and I am not sure if anyone would be able to go...I will since I know I have that entire weekend off from work.

Any other suggestions for a gathering? We could contact Killer Pizza from Mars up near Mark's place and see if they would host us there if we could get enough members to attend, could you look into this Mark or would you rather I call them?

Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, if it's not within a 2 hour drive of me that pretty much rules me out...and anything in California is sadly waaaay out of range. :(

Well we haven't fully agreed to Black Star Squadron...and this patch is just an idea I am throwing out there. I only found a 5 point star but I think a star with a few more points might look better...like the shape of the ships of light.

I dig the patch! What about going with a star sort of like this?

http://www.ncaonline.org/files/nca_images/trails/trails0007.jpg

Oh and I apologize...I was supposed to email you Rahcel! The Squadron name needs your approval! It came down to "Black Star Squadron" or the "Black Wolf Squadron" with the word "wolf" being the sort of thorn in the side. Wolves being called Lupis' in the series yet there was a character named Wolf and all.

Mark, dude, you are so dead on...that is what I have been looking for. That is the shape I had originally envisioned the shape. Now we just need to find a good enough picture to use and I could throw it together with what I got.

Mieal Deneb

I can see it now. I think it's too pointy, too 3-dimensional. It makes me think of the Crystalline Entity from ST: TNG. What if you just make it look more "flat" with less points? More like the image Mark posted? It needs to be a simple design that can translate into a logo and embroidered patch. I like where this is headed though.

Reaper
March 6th, 2009, 07:08 PM
I agree with Rachel, here, what about the simple 8 pointed design? the top and sides being the longer points, with the 4 angled points being half as long. Make it very simple and flat ont he galactica patch. (and definately black lol)

But we are getting there!

WHEN in July is it? More to the point, where is it being held?

If it's anywhere near NY, then I will be there with bells on.

If not, I will have to make plans to go out of state.

My last two weeks of vacation are in late July.

If it's in early July, then I am SOL.

Not sure when in it is, But SDCC is held in San Diego California. a long way from NY.

It's also a little late to plan the trip to this con. I believe the 3 day passes have already been sold out, not sure about day passes.

It's also going to be tough to get a hotel in San Diego at this point. But if you are able to, I would highly suggest you taking the trip, not only is the con a HUGE one and alot of fun
but the city is great!!

Eeerrrggg! Why is it that every time I get interested in something, I usually end up joining in too late?

I missed out on the cruise last year (which I didn't even know about, and I don't know if there's going to be another one!), and now I have to miss ComiCon!

(String of strong obscenities which I will not insult the members of this board by actually typing. For those of you who are too curious for words: ^&&^%^%&&^^*(((*^%$%%^$%$%%^&&**(*(*(*&^$$%^^&&&&&&!!!!!!)

Not that that string of gobbledygook means anything, but it was the only way I could vent without being censured.

Fear not, you will not be without options. Most of these cons go on every year. (Galacticon, or the cruise as of the last one, I believe is every 5 years)

Comic Con is a popular name, and there are more in other cities.

In June there will be Wizard World Philly,

In New York, Big Apple Con is coming up, And Next year there will be New York Comic Con. and again there will be San Diego Comic con as well.

Captain Chirri

I'm going to try for the Big Apple Con. The downside is I don't know if I have to work on that Saturday or not.

If I do, then I will end up missing most of it.

Is it for the whole weekend? If so, I will definitely be there on Sunday.
