View Full Version : For those that still love to build models...

I know, most folks don't bother building models anymore, unless they're CGI. Not to mentione, the last thing I need is another model, but I just couldn't resist. Someone has put out a couple of models from the 1960's TV series, Lost in Space nearly 40 years after it left the air.

It's a model of the Space Pod:

http://www.fabgearusa.com/space_pod_model_from_lost_in_space.html

It's very well made and nicely detailed. I can't believe that someone finally made a model with the interior and exterior detail intact. Instead of keeping this one in a box for years and wondering when I'll get to it, I think that I'm going to have to sit down and build this one up. The paint scheme isn't complicated and with some excellent reference pics off the DVDs, I couldn't screw it up if I tried.

I liked it so much, I went ahead and bought a model of the Chariot as well:

http://www.fabgearusa.com/chariot_model_from_lost_in_space.html

Don't let the prices scare you.....I got both of mine off of eBay for at least 10 bucks less than retail prices listed on most sites. I just need to go out and buy some glue and paint and get them built!

Bryan

Hi Gemini.
Nice looking kits. Have you finished any of them yet?

I haven't bought either of those kits, but I do have a Battlestar universe ship that I did build for my own webisodes I am working on.

She's the Hawkwind.

By the way, I did buy both the models and they are very brilliantly done. Did I build them yet? No, not quite. If I'd bought these when I was in my late teens or early twenties, I'd have them assembled and painted already. With all the modern technology and garage modelers out there that love to craft up "enhancements" and sell them to fellow modelers, that bit has slowed me up a bit.

There are a couple of companies that have crafted up a rotating light unit for the Space Pod (the model is perfectly suited for lighting), not to mention some photo-etch parts to make it look all the more authentic. Someone else has come up with custom decals for the areas of the Pod that weren't addressed by Moebius Models.

The Chariot is a whole other deal. Someone has just completed casting custom figures for the Chariot and is having them cranked out to sell. There's a lighting kit, photo etch parts, etc. that are already for sale, or in the works.

With all this neat stuff at my disposal, I'm going to hold off on building the models after Christmas so I can take advantage of all these neat stuff to make both models as authentic as you can get with a 1/24 scale model.

Thank you Athene,
Actually, one of my recent works happens to be my Avatar.
My namesake. She's a 1/24 scale figure that I painted.

Another one that I have done is Captain Ishtar 'Lady Killer' Dolyn in her Viper. She is the leader of the 'Star Wolves'. The best squadron aboard the only other battlestar known to have survived the Peace Conference Genocide. Battlestar Olympia.
(I am working on the story of this ship and her Fleet for an animation of webisodes/movie. As trying to do it live-action would be difficult :().

The Exhausts are from a aftermarket replacement kit I produce from Cheetah Productions.
The pilot was my first foray into figure painting after many years away.
I scratch-made her helmet emblem.
The 'Star Wolves' pennant was hand painted. (After I made this a friend of mine did a updated version and it happened to be added to an aftermarket decal set sold through Starship Modeler ).

I have always loved the Original Battlestar series (not a fan of the new series). And I have loved the Vipers since I first saw them.
The only thing I thought was missing from them was the Maneuvering Thrusters (though I never realized that until after I watched the NuBSG miniseries. :errr:). So I added them and some other "real world" markings.

Enjoy. :salute:

you're avatar looks great! I love the detail in it.

But I never felt the reaction thrusters were needed in TOS BSG ships. (Nor the Star Wars ones) TO explain why, YOu have an advanced tech society, where you have artificial Gravity onboard ships. If you apply the same tech to fighters, you can use the AG to apply the force needed to manuver the ship with reaction thrusters. Even Babylon 5, which was one of the first shows to really have Earth Tech limited by reaction thrusters and AG created by rotating ship sections, allowed the alien species to have fighters that used a AG field to manuver. it's just been explained as a more advanced tech.

That aside, I'd love to see more of you're namesake figure :) and For those of us less talented, do you take commissions? (I'd LOVE a figure of my character, Lt Erc) :)

It looks like I've got another new model to contend with...

I've been eyeing the 1/350 scale Polar Lights model of the TMP Enterprise. The pricing was rather prohibitive, but I finally found one via Amazon.com for only 35 bucks including shipping. I got the model in the mail the other day....my god, this thing is big! When I picked up the package, I expected it to be rather light because it was a plastic model and it was quite heavy. The size of the box alone was determined by the diameter of the saucer section. The model has over 150 pieces and is very detailed. It's also designed with lighting in mind, which is great if you take your modeling that seriously (I'm giving it some thought). After the model is built, it's about 3 feet in length, or nearly that. The original model that AMT/Ertl released back in the 70's and 80's was 22 inches long, so it's quite a jump in size.

It's going to have to get in line behind the Space Pod and Chariot models, but I couldn't pass it up at such a low price.

Thanks Reaper :)

I completely understand what you mean. When I was young the fact that they flew through space meant that they had tech far in advance of our own.
Yet, I also knew they were real, and existed then and now.
I won't get into it, but we can build and fly most of those ships and fighters today.

Yet, because everyone has been wanting the more "real world" aspects to their science fiction, I decided to add the thrusters. I also think they look pretty cool. :D

Also, your points about the Vipers and SW ships not having RCTs are the same reasons that the Nu BSG doesn't 'make sense' to me.
Their ships have artificial gravity, they are capable of traveling faster-than-light, they can pilot small fighter/shuttle size vessels through the harshness of space. Yet they don't have laser cannons, Plasma turrets, energy powered shields against physical attacks?

THAT doesn't make sense.:wtf:
Oh, and they drive around in H2's and shoot bullets from their semi-automatic pistols?

But when I have finished my animations, I will have the TOS look and feel, including the fighters, except those will have the little aspect of the RCTs (like my model).
Other than that, my ships are in the TOS style. ;)
That aside, I'd love to see more of you're namesake figure :) and For those of us less talented, do you take commissions? (I'd LOVE a figure of my character, Lt Erc) :)
Do I take commissions?
Well, the figure that I painted, I did just that. I painted it.
I didn't sculpt it, I bought it from, I believe Sci-hi Models.
He made the masters (a male and a female Colonial Warrior) then cast them in resin.

Mine needed some cleaning up around the seams (puttying and such), then I painted it.

I am not diminishing my work. Not at all. I just want to let you know that I didn't sculpt it. In case that was what you were asking about.

I'll post some pictures of her soon.

Nope, painting would be enough lol :)

I know where tyo get the figures that are in scale with the Viper models, I'd love to get one, and then a similar scaled head (since Lt Erc is Bald lol) to mod into the figure. Problem is, my painting skills are, well, I suck lol.

The base has a magnet under the Squadron Art, and the figure has a steel rod running horizontally in her boot. That way she will stay in one place, but the art won't be marred.
The squadron is also a creation of mine.
Both will be used in an 'film' I am working on.

I still build, tho don't finish nearly as fast as I wish I did.... :(

Couple of threads at various forums which I started w/pics of some of my works:

Fantastic Plastics Colonial Defender Buildup (over at R.I.) (http://www.resinilluminati.com/showthread.php?t=3867)

I also did a Buildup Review of ARVEY Model Products Mineral Ship (http://starshipmodeler.com/other/jg_mineral.htm) at Starship Modeler. And an In-Box Preview of the Timeslip Creations Rising Star kit (http://starshipmodeler.com/Other/jg_rs.htm), which I need to update as I've got the kit nearly finished - just need to do some weathering.

I've got a bunch of pics of my 1/2500 scale Star Trek models, as well. However, AOL decided to dump it's FTP/Website Hosting Service, so most of those pics are no longer to be found online. I need to find an online hosting site - and think I've got one lined up - then register an URL and then upload the HTML and pics. Gotta re-write the pages, tho, as all the links will point to the older AOL links.

I haven't bought either of those kits, but I do have a Battlestar universe ship that I did build for my own webisodes I am working on.
