View Full Version : Galactica Landing Bay interior

Please bear with me, this is my first modelling project ever. Using the floorplan posted here by Taranis, I've begun construction of Level 2 of the landing bay. This pic is very preliminary and some of it is untextured. I added a few models for scale. The bay is wider than it looks, considering the row of 5 shuttles on the right further back in the bay. Program being used.....Bryce 5.5.

Ok, barrier 1 is up with the first set of airlock doors. Also did some retexturing on the floor. I'll eventually change the texture on the doors. Shuttle is there for scale. Also including a screenshot of my Bryce layout screen showing a zoomed out top view of the whole thing to give you an idea of how big this sucker is. And thanks for the kind words so far!! :salute:

Remembering from Taranis' drawing that the shuttles and landrams were stored on level 3, I realized that I would have to at least build an elevator for the shuttles. This was a little more involved than the viper elevators, since it comes down rather than goes down. Here it is, I'll merge it with the hanger later.

Here's a shot from the forward compartment, looking aft through the 3 now installed airlock bulkheads and doors (I promise, I'll eventually change that door texture). Due to the size of the shuttle, I might increase the size of the doors and the openings, or I can slightly reduce the size of the shuttle. Anyway, Viper elevators are now installed in the forward compartment (non-working). :Nsalute: :muffit:

I looked at the bay for a while and I realized that the bulkhead doors were too small, so I widened them. This halfway solves the EA Destroyer problem, as shown in the picture. Plus, non-working shuttle elevators installed in the background, so you get an idea of the difference in size between a colonial shuttle and the EA Destroyer. Please pardon the door in the background that has yet to be resized.

The barrier doors look quite similar to the ones from SW.
I really like these shots. A lot of people post images of space battles, many of which as stunning.
But these are very different to that, still BSG, but the skill and detail make your shots stand out from the crowd. I do hope you will animate them to bring the hanger bay to life.
These images are a refreshing change.

Tiny details like Fire Extinguishers.
The lifts (for people) are often seen. As was a Decomtanination chamber in one episodes.
How about an alternate version showing damage after one of the many times a Cylon Raider flew(firing) into the bay ?
Other animations would be good. Just some quick ideas off the top of my head.

On aircraft carriers, don't they have a cable to catch the landing gear, and some kind of net that pops out of the deck to catch it if it's going to fast?

Currently rendering scene 1 of a new animation that i'm calling "A Shuttle Odyssey - A Trip Through The Landing Bay", which will follow a colonial shuttle's trip through the landing bay from the shuttle elevator in the front, through the barrier doors, and finally to the back, where it will launch. This way, i'll be able to animate just about all of the moving parts of the landing bay. Scene 1 is the shuttle coming down the elevator.
In the attached pic, the Viper on the very right is taxiing through the bay as the shuttle is being lowered, it will cross the screen.

I'm not sure that question has ever been answered. All I know that in one episode (I'm not sure which one), the shuttle is seen taxiing in the landing bay by just gliding along the floor on its little pads. Maybe there's some kind of anti-grav thing going on. Or there's little wheels under the pads, I dunno.

I think that is more in keepiing with the Galactica's Universe ... perhaps wheels or tracks extend down from the landing struts ....but your guess is as good as mine.

If it weren't for the number of Vipers in the landing bay....I would suggest this slow movement of the shuttle is, upon launch, plunged into the middle of a major space battle. A instant and unexpected change of pace.
Perhaps include audio that they will make it through and pick up the lost warrior....and while the come under fire....they make it out to start their mission.
Just an idea......

Scene 6 is about to start shooting. I've had to do some last minute prep on the launch area before I move the shuttle in there, atmospheric shield generators, more viper doors, and realigning the guide lights for light-up animation (that's going to be fun. (<<<< insert sarcasm here)) :salute:

Setting up the launch and recovery area for animation.........
I've timed 20 seconds of guide light animation (600 frames). They'll be changing every 5 frames, and that timing is based on a frame by frame analysis of a tv episode (taking into account the doubling of every 5th frame on ntsc). I've also added the atmosperic shield generators. The picture attached shows those and two of the guide lights lit up. Also, right at the top of the entrance to the bay, there is a texture made from a screencap of the tv bay.

10 seconds. I think it's all the textures that are making it take longer. It will look good in the end though. :salute:

Ok, scene 6 is in production again, and re-imagined too. A Crimson Viper is landing in the bay (I figure this is a good way to show the flashing guide lights), the camera will follow, and at the end of the shot the shuttle is entering the bay.

I like the added texture at the rear of the landing bay .. nice touch ....
I am hoping to incorporate the landing bay in the Galactica that I am planing to build once the Celestra and the 2 other model I have committed myself to building for the fan Film .. The Rising Star and the Prison Barge .. But the Galactica will
not be for that .. (first It won't be made in time and the one by westy is fantastic .. and I nowhere that good .

That's actually a cropped screencap from "Baltar's Escape". I cropped that part of the landing bay in the picture and then "free transformed" it to where it doesn't look like it's at an angle.

rendering is taking longer in the launch area, so rather then doing a week long render and fearing a power failure or systems crash, i'm dividing it up. If all goes well, it should be seamless. I'll post a test edit 3 once scene 6 is done.

I know that recent version of Blender 3D and macs are having issues rendering to quicktime movies....so for major renders I use Respower.com. Cost is $20-04 a month, and you can only render frames and import into a movie using QT Pro. (not a big deal)
I'm not sure if they support Bryce or not and if they do what the costs are like.

Thanks, but I gotta go the "no money" route for economic reasons.

To answer your question, what comes next, is getting the shuttle into launch position and launching the shuttle itself.

Here's an idea, how about some internal cannons, or automated machine guns. Basically to guard against potential enemy boarding parties.

Well, have seen now a Animation, great Motion and Camera, but why is the Hangar so naked? With some Greebles, Ribb-Structures and Engeneering-Parts and other Stuff they can be much better then now. If you need some Airfield-Props, i have a good Collection of it and you can get it.
