View Full Version : Got a favorite warrior? I do!

I've often thought about which one of the warrior characters was my favorite.
It may seem odd, but Boomer really is the man.
Boomer actually showed a common sense that neither Starbuck NOR Apollo managed to evidence.
He was loyal, smart, handy with all things electronic, had a good military history, and was constantly the "go to" guy for Apollo and Starbuck when they needed backup.
He helped Apollo get past security and up to Sire Uri's compartment on the Rising Star.
He flew with the "heroes" through the Nova of Madagon. He climbed, deathly ill into the cockpit of a Viper to lead the warriors and save the day on Kobol.
He rescued the Commander's daughter and step-grandson from a Fire In Space.
He stared down three Klingons...err, Borellian Nomen with only JOLLY as support.
He looked after Boxey (hey..ain't that Jolly's job?) when Apollo and Starbuck went missing.
He wired up the identifier signal device to make sure that Apollo & Starbuck wouldn't get shot down when they returned in a Cylon Raider and THEN after those two bunglers LOST it, BOOMER recognized that they were "waggling their wings".
I tell ya, if it weren't for Boomer, our so-called "heroes" would have been fragged a dozen times over. And so on and so on and so on.
That's why, when I get my studio scale Viper, I'm gonna put Boomer in the cockpit!!

I always liked in Fire In Space when he basically admitted to hot wiring cars. It always stuck with me.
My kinda guy!
My heart still belongs to Starbuck though. Why do I always like the ones who cause me grief?

When I met Herb J. at a convention, I told him my observations about Boomer. He was sincerely humble about it all. I basically told him that out of all of the warriors, I had the most respect for Boomer because he was the only one who seemed to have his crap together on a consistent basis.
He demurred taking any credit for the character. That's class.
Evidently Herb worked as a fireman for a while. A buddy of mine was a firefighter in Chicago. When they met at a local con, they hit it off right away. Herb kept bending his ear about firefighting, so my buddy Jack told him, "I'll give up stories about firefighting if you give up stories about Galactica."
Pretty cool.

When I was younger during the run of the show itself (1978), I always liked Starbuck. My best friend had dark hair and I had lighter brown hair, so we identified well with Apollo and Starbuck respectively.
However, as of the last several years that I have watched the series over and over again and have gotten to meet all the actors from the show, I think I have to say that Apollo is now my favorite character. I believe that the way he played him is very indicative of how I am today as an adult, more steady than impulsive and very driven by moral principles. So I personally identify with his character more than any other.
Of course, who can't like Adama either. Lorne was awesome!

Absolutely. Lorne Greene was a super guy. I have two autographs from him that he sent me after I wrote. Personalized and everything.

Yeah, but I'm NOT a girl... and even I noticed!!! LOL!!!
Actually, the footage showing his ripped crotch seam is mostly in the "extras" for Fire In Space. Extras, indeed! LOL!!!
But hey, that's the price you pay for wearing ultra-tight fashion by Jean Pierre!

If my poor failing memory still serves me even a bit, I'm pretty sure that Starbuck was my favorite warrior during the original run of BG and for years and years after. Today, however, I'm going to pick Tigh as my favorite. He was far from perfect (though thankfully not a drunk!) but his loyalty to Adama as both a fellow warrior and friend was inspiring. I dare say that BG would not have been BG without Colonel Tigh on the bridge at Adama's side.
(And he had a couple hilarious lines, too, i.e. "Saga"'s "When Commander Adama sees these, he's gonna go crazy!")
But re: Boomer in "Fire in Space," the final scene where Apollo barely gets out a "Thank you" to Boomer for saving Boxey and Athena chokes me up to this day! That was a great spotlight episode on both the Boom and Athena.

Just thought of another "Tigh moment": I think it was in "Lost Warrior" where he tells (yells at, actually) Adama that if it was anyone other than Apollo who was separated from the fleet, the Commander would have sent out a search party. "Don't diminish his chances because he's your son" or something like that. Adama ok's the launch, Tigh gets on the comm, and microns later vipers take off. Can't recall his exact words but Tigh says something along the lines of, "I guess there were two vipers ready to launch." :rotf:

Yeah, the more I think about it, the boom really is the man! If we had a second season, I would like to think that he would have gotten his due.
...and I am glad that someone else calls him "The Boom"!

Boomer was the "unsung" hero of the crew being that he was the perfect buffer between Apollo's rigidness and Starbuck's flightiness.
However, from day one it was Apollo for me. And not just because he was so dreamy to an 11 year old girl either. ;) It was the closing scene of "Lost Planet of the Gods" when he explained to Boxey about Serina dying and I was hooked. Later, in high-school, a steady stream of novels came out and that just made Apollo all the more for me. Anyone remember the 13th book, "Apollo's War"? Outside of the fact they dropped the Sheba/Apollo pairing, one of my favorite Apollo stories. Starbuck was fun but the moral compass came from Apollo and that made a strong mark on me back then that still hasn't faded.
Plus he was (still is?) pretty dreamy...

LOL, well... from a purely hetro teenage boy's POV, Starbuck was the 'guy' that you wanted to be, and Apollo was the 'man' you hoped you'd become (once you worked out all the 'teenage' stuff in your Starbuck phase).
Apollo is the 'all rounder'.
They very cleverly managed to write characters, and cast performers that kind of grow with the viewer. I find that I actually appreciate all of the charcters even more now, than I did back then.
For such a short show there is so much depth to the characterisation, that even all these years later you can find more to love about all of them.
I think that one of the true strengths of BSG is that a lot of the characters 'speak' to both genders.
It's something thats been lost to a great extent in current tv writing trends.

Funny thing is I think my mom would get along better with Dirk than with Richard IRL.:rotf:
Female warriors I always identified with Bree because she nearly lost it all on her first mission launch. That's about my speed. Sheba was my ideal though.

Aww... now I feel bad that no one picked spcglider's fav. :(
Sorry, spcglider, but Boomer made a couple of boo-boo's that kind of took him off the list for me. He did have those great wash-board abs  , but he sided with Iblis in WotG and WotG being my all time favorite sci fi episode ever, took him out of the running. And who was the one in the end who "beat" Iblis? Yep, my guy. :D
And yeah, Sheba picked the "wrong" side too, but she's also the only female we saw on camera to turn Starbuck down (see part 2 - LL) so that for me trumps all of her other shortcomings. ;)
If it makes you feel any better, one redeeming quality of G80 was that Boomer was now second in command so if/when Adama died, he'd be the fleet commander, not my guy or that other guy. I hope that helps... :salute:

Okay, but here's the rub about WOTG... EVERYBODY except Tigh, Apollo and Adama sided with Iblis... EVEN STARBUCK (for a while). Even SUPERMAN, who was disguised as a lame old man, eventually fell for Iblis' trickery*.So I can't personally accept the WOTG downfall as a deal breaker on Boomer. I mean, comparing Boomer to Job, Jesus and Moses would be about as fair! I'm not gonna fault him for being human!
LOL!

Technically, Adama and Apollo both suggested that "half the fleet was welling to follow him [Iblis]..." so not EVERYBODY fell for it. And because the big three didn't fall for Iblis, well, that's what made Apollo so cool to me. (Starbuck could have actually made it a closer race if he hadn't stayed at Iblis' party. That sealed Starbuck's fate in my book too giving Apollo the runaway win.)
But if you need the other reason, and believe me this is a hard thing to say about Boom Boom. It was Boomer's fault all the pilots got sick in LPotG. He was uncharacteristically sloppy and skipped the most important and simplest of requirements of decontamination after a patrol. Jolly can't be at fault here because he was sent straight to Life Station after they landed. But it was Boomer going to the party that got everyone else sick. He makes up for it by saving the day at the end ("The viper is flown in the seated position, sir. " MVP Quote of part 2 IMHO), but still, the risk those new pilots had to take because of his little boo boo was really bad. (Bad Boomer, bad.)
;)

Dale Arden was the name of Melody Anderson's character in the 1980's Buck Rogers. She played Brenda Maxwell in Experiment In Terra. She also did a shot on the A-Team, the TV Version of Logan's Run, and Manimal!!!
And after much debate, as much as the Boom was cool and Apollo was just too amazing for words, Starbuck is the man I would most like to see come to my rescue.

yes, Boomer makes a huge mistake in LPotG but he does make it right in the end when the colonials camped on Kobol need the help when the Cylons attack. He is after all, human and we all make mistakes. I think that's what this episode intended to show by using Boomer's goof as an example.

I know Boomer is "human" and that "everyone makes mistakes". I wasn't withholding mushies from him or calling him the worse character on the show, or sending him to H- E- double tooth picks for his crimes against humanity. I was just noting the reasons he's not my favorite warrior, which was the original question, remember?. For me, because Apollo made less of these human mistakes than the others, he became my favorite character. that's all...

The gal who played Dale Arden in the Delaurentis version of Flash Gordon with Topol and Sam J Jones plays the woman who Apollo gets hooked up with on Terra (she thinks he's some other guy because the Angel John makes him appear differently). Her name is Melody Anderson.
But there's plenty of other guest stars that are floating around in there.

After reading most of the comments about Boomer, with a few about Starbuck, Apollo, Adama, and the rest of the crew I noticed my favorite not mentioned. That has to be Commander Cain. The guy has the no guts, no glory attitude. Kill them now type of guy, and when the chips are down, just move the chips some place else. He has the hottest woman in the fleet next to him, (Cassie) plus a hot looking daughter. Every one loves his warrior skills on how to out think a Cylon. He even looks good in that one of a like helmet.
