ABC News Special Report(9-17-78)

I've been watching a VHS recording of the original "Saga Of A Star World" broadcast(ABC Sunday Night Movie). The ABC News special report appeared at 10:30PM, but I also remember the program that aired before the premiere of BSG. I also recall ABC News breaking in halfway through that show. I'm on the West Coast, BTW. Although I also remember watching the 10:30PM special report at the time, too. I'm thinking ABC News broke in more than once 7:00-11:30PM PT that night. It actually would be interesting to track down a full recording of that whole night, now that I think of it.

i only remember the one break in, though it would have been normal to have a mini-news update on a commercial break on such a night, if the media knew things were getting close.

Truthfully, I don't think the networks were expecting Carter, Begin and Sadat to emerge that late at night to announce their deal but once they got a heads-up that it was going to happen they knew they had to cover the story in full.

I confess that that night, after watching the first hour of Galactica, I had switched over to NBC to watch Part 2 of "King Kong" (they had padded the movie with all kinds of extraneous footage to get a two night running time out of it) and I remember them cutting in at 10:30 and being upset that I wasn't going to see the finish because even though I heard the announcer mention how they were going to resume from that point when the news was over, I also knew that my parents weren't going to let me stay up that late! (I was already pushing my luck just to stay up to 11!).

I would love to find an off-air recording that left the news interruption intact since that would be fascinating from a history standpoint.

Funny thing is that I absolutely do not remember the break in for the news special report! I remember watching the beginning the Galactica, but not much after that. I do know that we did tape the show but my mom later erased my original recording to tape record a soap opera!!!!!! I was not happy...

Erasing it for a game show I could understand, but a soap? Never! :)

What time zone were you in that night? Pacific zone I think would have seen it uninterrupted since the newsbreak was done by 11 PM Eastern, I think.

I was born and grew up in Texas (although live out east now) and we were in the Central Time zone...Galactica always aired at 7 pm on Sunday nights. The best night of the week!!!!

I remem,ber that break and being upset with the network for it

I really dont think the show ever recovered from the first night
The pres interupted the networks biggest premier .......the curse began

As Starbuck said just before ABC News cut in (on the recording I have), "Aw, Frack!" I also remember KOMO-TV(ABC's Seattle-Tacoma affilliate) delayed part one of "Lost Planet Of the Gods" until 10:00PM the following week due to the special Sunday night edition of "Monday Night Football"(the games aired at 6:00PM PT). OT, Monday nights will be different for ABC this September when MNF moves to ESPN. Go, Seahawks!(Had to throw that in).
