Folks, this is the beginning of my idea of how to reimagine Battlestar Galactica, and I sincerely think that this is one that will appeal to ALL fans of the property.

Whilst in the shower a couple of days ago, I started thinking about "Saga of a Star World", and how it could be reimagined in a more positive aspect, maintaining much of what made the original Galactica so special, and yet, adding in only certain elements that I appreciate about RDM's show.

--------------------------------
Now, check this out:

The story will be retitled from "Saga of a Star World" to "The Last Battlestar".

First off, Starbuck and Boomer are guys again. Colonel Tigh is an African American (or maybe I should say African Caprican again ).

I am still sticking with the notion that names like Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer are callsigns...but I am changing the names of the characters.

Ian "Preacher" Adama (father of Apollo, Zak, and Athena) is already a Vice Admiral.

The Cylons were created by aliens.....albeit a recently nearly extinct race.

The Human/Cylon war still only lasted 50 yahrens.

Time units will be restored to microns, centons, yahrens, etc... but some of their pronunciations will be a little more subtle. (example : Mike-ren, instead of Mike-rahn.)

Colonial expletives like frak and felgercarb will be used....and yes, frak will have the same emphasis as it is used in the new show.

Colonial religion will be varied. Some planets, like Caprica, will have monotheism (believing in the same God that the original series characters did), while some other colonies, like Geminus (yes, I am renaming some of the colonies) will embrace polytheism. There will also be some of the Egyptian mythological trappings that were present in the original series. The varying religious beliefs will have been the source of some dischord amidst Colonial relations in centuries past.

The battlestar Galactica is not 500 yahren old, or even 50 yahren old. In my reimagining, the Galactica is a new, state of the art warship; a prototype for the newest class of battlestars. She will be equipped with the latest in weapons, defense, and stealth technology. She is due for her first shakedown cruise when the Cylons violate the truce they've sued for, and devastate the colonies. But even the Cylons, with all their intelligence gathering capabilities, are not aware that the Galactica is almost ready to come online....and they don't even know the location of the secret new warship. Vice Admiral Adama determines that the Galactica (which he was due to command anyway) needs to come online, and that the engineering teams will have to work double quick to make sure the ship is ready for battle, and for a rescue/evacuation effort of a magnitude unseen in human history. In addition to the Galactica, there will be a few destroyers which will be part of the fleet (since, realistically, a single ship cannot protect a largely civilian convoy, even with fighter complements)....but it will still be played off that the Galactica is "The Last Battlestar".

Count Dimitri Baltar is an egotistical politician, who is coerced into betraying his people by a manipulative, yet mysterious being who promises him power if he helps the Cylons subjugate his own people.

There will still be a "Quorum of the Twelve"...and there will still be the petty bickering, self-serving natures of many of the representatives.

The story will actually start about 10 yahren before the events of the Cylon treachery....during the last 10 yahren of the Cylon/Human war. Zachary "Zak" Adama has JUST graduated with honors from the Colonial Warrior Officer Flight Academy. Present at his graduation are (then) are his father, Commander Ian Adama (CO of the Pegasus at the time); Zak's older brother, Captain-Lieutenant James "Apollo" Adama, DCAG of battlestar Rycon; Athena Adama (who at the time is only 13 yahren old), Lieutenant John "Starbuck" Cambray, who cannot wait to get Zak (whom he also regards as a little brother) all sloshed after the ceremonies, Lieutenant Tyrone "Boomer" Boomi. After the appropriate familial congradulations, the new officer is assigned (along with Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck) to an outpost settlement of the Piscan colonies (which is being terraformed into a hospitable world, and then to be transformed into a resort outpost called Kel Pisca-- just the kind of assignment the boys need ).

So, about a yahren later, Zak, and the others have performed their duties admirably, performing CAP's around the newly forming outpost. One night, they are relaxing at the officer's club, off-duty. Starbuck is only a little more than sloshed. During their revelry, a small Cylon task force jumps into the system, and as we learn, the arrival at this system is an accident. However, the Cylons detect the Colonial outpost, and carry out their programming...attack and destroy. Caught completely by surprise, Zak, Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck bolt into action, except that Starbuck is not quite as sober as he ought to be. Under Apollo's orders, Starbuck reluctantly sits this one out. The two Viper squadrons assigned to Kel Pisca engage the Cylon task force. Zak fights brilliantly, but eager to prove his prowess behind the stick, he violates the one stricture that was drilled into his brain at CWOFA....NEVER leave your wingman. He sees the last two Raiders, and decides they are easy pickings. He leaves Apollo's wing, and goes after them. Apollo orders him back into formation. Zak manages to destroy one of the two escaping Raiders, but the other Raider feints, and pulls into Zak's death zone. Before Apollo, or any of the other surprised Viper pilots can get into position to defend the hasty young warrior, the Raider destroys Zak's plane, and escapes. Everyone is shocked with horror. Apollo has lost his brother in his first combat mission, which was a freak of luck. The news of Zak's death will continue to secretly eat away at Starbuck for yahren's.

Skip ahead to 10 yahrens later. Ian Adama is now a Vice Admiral, slated to command a new class of battlestar: the prototype named Galactica. 4 yahren earlier, he had given command of the Pegasus to his XO (then) Colonel Stephen "Ghost Rider" Cain. Athena has graduated Colonial Warrior Officer Academy with honors, although she is not a flight officer. (Her eyesight, while not debilitaing, was not suitable for Flight Academy). Because of her high graduating status, her first assignment will be as a bridge officer aboard the new Galactica. A new public relations and recruiting campaign within Colonial Fleet emphasizes that it is a good option for family members to serve aboard the same warship, be it a destroyer or a battlestar, or within the same squadron or unit. This has helped Colonial recruiting efforts tremendously.

After 50 yahren of war, the Colonials ambassador to the Cylons, Count Dimitri Baltar (appointed personally by President Miko Adar), has announced that the Cylons are suing for a cessation of hostilities. The Cylon Imperious Leader, Vekno, one of the last of the organic Cylons, has determined that it is time to end this pointless war.

Perhaps the only one who isn't buying this felgercarb right now is VAdm. Adama. Aboard his personal warship, the battlestar Atlantia, President Adar tries to reassure Adama, but Adama replies: "Mr. President, forgive me, but I cannot entirely buy this peace move."

"But why?" Adar asks. "Under Count Baltar's charsimatic negotiations, the Cylons have been convinced that peace is the only way. Human and Cylon have been at a constant state of stalemate, militarily since the outset of this overlong war."

"That self-serving son of a bitch is part of the reason I don't buy this, Mr. President." Adama replies.

"First, Ian, do not speak about my friend in that manner. Dimitri Baltar has done much to try and secure an end to this war." Adar admonishes.

"Apologies, Mr. President." Adama replies, half-heartedly.

"And second.....such language. I thought you were a preacher, Admiral." Adar laughs.

"That's only my old callsign, Mr. President." Adama grins. "To get back on point though, my other concern is with the Cylons themselves. Their regime is puppet at best....but I am just not sure who is pulling the strings. Is it this "Imperious Leader Vekno"? One of the last of their organic form? Or is it the robots that the Cylons created for this war, who then turned on their own masters and tried to annihilate them?"

"Well, Ian, the Cylons did not create their centurions for this particular war. They were created to subjugate the Hasari nation, who as you'll recall, seceeded from the Cylon Alliance some 52 yahren ago. If we had not interfered in what was clearly an internal Cylon affair--"

"Sir," Adama cuts in, "I am a student of history. I think our intervention was no mistake. The Hasari recognized the Cylon threat, and wanted no part of it. If it weren't for the Hasari, the entire Universe may have been caught by surprise with the Cylons' ambitions."

"That is one opinion, Admiral," Adar replies with an affable smile, "It does not happen to be mine." And with a friendly clap on Adama's shoulder, the president walks to rejoin the festivities aboard the battlestar Atlantia.

And this is where I am at right now. So, folks, whaddaya think so far? I would love to hear from TOS fans and hybrids alike. Do you think this could have universal appeal across the fandoms of BSG? If I commit this to actual fanfiction, I will post it in the fanfic section. I am placing this post on other Battlestar boards, to see what kind of reaction it will get.

Respectfully, and hopeful,
