This guy is making a 3D video game called Colonial Warrior:

http://www.aaa-multimedia.com/colonialwarrior.htm

As requested on his page I e-mailed him a tester request before downloading it, here's the response I got:

Hi,

Welcome aboard! CW is an ongoing project, I do it in my spare time, and
sometime that isn't a lot. I will continue to work on it so please be
patient. It's a labor of love, but it is still in it's development. It's
biggest weakness is probably poor art... it could use better models and
maps, so if you can contribute in these areas please do Most of all I
hope you enjoy it, despite it's shortcomings. I always appreciate feedback
and suggestions.

I remember he joined here and pasted something similar a while back.......

But aren't there loads of better models of ships in the Downloads section ?

I downloaded the current version from his site, its pretty rough....but a good start...........

You mean the downloads section here at Fleets?

Yeah it's a bit choppy, I thought it just might be because I don't really have one of those 3D excellerator video card thingys. But it's pretty good for a home grown video game.

Well here's what he had to say regarding the downloads section:

probably have those models :) the thing is they are hi-rez 3DS type files suited to photo realistic rendering like those used in movies... what is needed here are low-rez models cleverly optimized and "skinned" for max performance and visual impact, preferably in MD2 format. (easier said than done)

Part of the reason things are choppy (slow) is that the models and maps are "over complex" or not "optimized" properly... good maps and models will signicantly improve performance... of course CPU speed, RAM limitations and speed, HD speed, swap file size and (as you mentioned) graphics capabilities also play a part :)

Low-poly game modelling is an entirely different art from the high-detail FX-quality models.

I'd suggest that he get in touch with the people behind the Rise of Kobol mod for Battlefield 2 and see if he can license (i.e. use with their permission and consent) the low-poly models that they created for that project. They get to leverage their models across multiple projects while he gets access to some optimized low-poly models.

Doesn't hurt to ask.

Too bad it's based on TNS. One of the things that I thought was cool about Colonial Warrior, is that it's exclusively TOS.

From what I understand, the RoK people are incorporating TOS material as well.
