View Full Version : Gordon's viper helmet design
spcglider
March 7th, 2006, 08:51 AM
Okay,
Just to put a little pressure on myself, I decided to start this thread. I started making sketches of my own viper helmet design... as per discussion in another thread.
The justification of the side view and the front view and the top view of my design is really difficult on paper. I know it will work in 3 dimensions, but my drawing skills are atrophied at best from dis-use.
Once I get a decent set of drawings, I'll post them. maybe I'll even do a quickie sculpt over a GI Joe head to show the concept in 3-D with jpegs.

Cool.........I know a TOS Season 2 Helmet design that was never seen in the show was sold by Profiles in History a while ago. Are you using this for reference, or is it 100% your own ?

That was probably the "Daggit Squadron" helmet. Also used at the Battle Of Galactica tram attraction.
I'm actually in the middle of refurbishing that for its owner right now (Peter Noble). Its a nice piece. Built on top of a Simpson motocross helmet.
But no, that's not what I'm basing it on.
My thought is just to streamline and update the original helmet design. Its a great design and i don't know why anyone would want to mess with it too much.
But the geometry of the thing is actually much more complex than one would think. That's why I'm having a little trouble with the justification of some of the lines on my re-worked design.

Its just a quick way of portraying the geometry. not a finished model.

I'm on the job, but i just posted this thread TODAY. I haven't been able to plop my arse down in front of the boob toob and get all zen to the musical stylings of American Idol. That's where I do my best work! (I can ignore those stupid kids and concentrate!)
I'll get some better drawings done up and post them by mid next week.

I worked on it a little last night. The side view is pretty groovy. I'm maintaining all the same visual cues as the original helmet but trying to update the overall lines just a bit.
Its not like I'm creating this thing from whole cloth... its definitely a variation on a theme. The same helmet, but made to look "faster" and more sleek.

But seriously... like I said, I'm not radically redefining the helmet. All the familiar elements are there and are reflected in this design. It's just streamlined a little. The helmet from the Desanto designs is far more wildly modified than mine.
In fact, one might callmy redesign rather podantic. I'll get it up on Monday if possible.

Well, I like it. it's more angular and closer fitting to the head. The mic has an Ant-Man sort of feel to it and the Cobra-look of the helmet seems to be more emphasised.
Not sure about the "eagle" though.
Now, what can we get him to do next...?

Thanks for posting that Peter.
Yeah, the bird doesn't look like what I had in mind from the front. It's supposed to be alot more sleek and streamlined, but I never did a close-up drawing. I wanted it larger and longer, but the front view makes it look fat. Didn't intend that.

March 27th, 2006, 04:07 PM
Yeah, I actually like the G80 version better than the original or DeSanto's too. I was never really that hot on DeSanto's helmet, I thought it strayed too far from the Pharoh Headress look. I like this one a little better than G80 though.
One idea I always had about updating the helmets was to have the lights on them, actually be force field generators, like in the hanger bays in Start Wars, so the helmet can double as a space helmet, rather than just having a clear acrylic visor.

Actually it suprises me that nobody has taken on this sort of thing before... but I guess we needed to get to a point where most of the stuff from the original show had been replicated and made available so that the model makers (like me and Michael) would get the itch to start making "expanded universe" type stuff.
