View Full Version : TOS plays in many ways like Westerns.

I just recently started going through the episodes again and it is pretty striking how much of the series and characterizations seem to take right from Western TV/Movie themes ... maybe Lorne Greene brought along Little Joe and Hoss to BSG ... at any rate, I'm introducing my kids to TOS right now and they appreciate it for what it is ... a lot more light hearted and action packed than TNS. Which we also enjoy. I've noticed no talky about TNS around here so I imagine at some point flame wars erupted between different factions, so I'll leave that at that.
Since I'm new around here, I imagine I'll tread on well covered ground by the veterans around here ...

Westerns, cop shows and hospital dramas where what the writers knew. They didn't tap into Trek writers etc, it might have been cool if they did. They could do the action formula thing but where treading into ground unknown to them. Battlestar Galactica suffers from that, to bad a second was not commissioned because Isaac Asimov was to give the show some sci-fi props.
Funny I now love Firefly a space western!
You are spot on about the lack of new series content. It got real ugly at times and the owner with the staff made a change. We've been much happier since. Perhaps one of the staff will give you the official policy and I know there is some where here a letter from Titon that explains everything.
I should add a big focus here is the future of the original series. While big studio prospects seem dim at the moment there are many fan projects in the works.

Yeah, I certainly can understand that. I've seen great forums with all sorts of different content, ie music, etc get torn apart by these types of issues. Not worth it ...
I'll check around and read up on some stuff around here. Seems to be a good group of people. :salute:

Welcome Apoptygma
Absolutely right, but more than that. BSG retold various classic tales from the old testament right through to The Magnificent Seven and Shane!
And yes, we are all about the original Battlestar Galactica here, there are plenty of places for fans of Sci-Fi's show to chat, I think its nice to have a special place just for discussion of the classics!

Yoa are on the mark. Watching Bonanza reruns occasionally ,I expect to see a
Cylon walk by. In some ways (in my opinion only), BG's sometimes non-traditional approach to science fiction showed potential. Too bad the series didn't get a couple more seasons to get the bugs worked out.
I just finished reading the book, Asimov Laughs Again, and he has quite a sense of humor and would have really been a credit to the series.

Yup... its all a function of episodic adventure television writing. Every show has to have a "crewmember on trial" episode and every show has to have a "crewmember gets irretreivably lost" episode and they all need to have a "flashback" episode (to save production budget) and they all have to have a "crewmember is going to die" epsisode, and a "solve the crime" episode and a "haunted house" episode, etc. etc etc.
Every show from Bonanza to Greatest American Hero to Gilligan's Island to Stargate SG-1 has been through those in one form or another. I think there's a big book of MAD LIBS designed for TV writers with all these plots containing empty spaces where they just fill in character names and series-specific plot devices.
But sometimes they manage to hit one out of the park, even with these hackneyed storylines. And THAT, my friends, is GREAT TV.

My all-time favorite scenes of Battlestar Galactica was in "The Lost Warrior." Apollo's quick-draw with the Cylon called Red-Eye was taken straight from the original 1953 western movie called "Shane." I still love watching that scene!!!

Thanks, Sept17. :)
Apoptygma,
Here's the thread which explains why we shutdown discussion about the new Battlestar Galactica series (aka TNS) :
The time has come (http://www.colonialfleets.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11884)
While we hold no malice toward anyone who happens to like the new show, we just simply could not continue to host discussion about a show which goes against so many of our values. Considering that there are a number of other sites which willingly host discussion about the new show, we did not feel that that particular obligation was necessary at Fleets.
The only exception that we make, regarding TNS, is with regards to artwork. All works are accepted, whether BSG-TOS, TNS, G-80, or other science fiction genre show art projects. In general, you'll find Battlestar Galactica artwork located here at the Fleets Gallery (www.colonialfleets.com/gallery); other sci-fi show artwork can be found at our sister site, 3DGladiators (www.3dgladiators.com).
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. We'll do our best to answer them and ........
Welcome to Colonial Fleets!
