In the first episode, the cylons stage a massive attack and devistate the colonies. Okay, fine and dandy.

However, as a military historian, I find a few flaws in the premis.

1) All the colonial fleet battlestars are on crew standdown.

There are two flaws with this concept, except in port, no capital ship would be on full stand down. In the case of the battlestars, Vipers would be on ready 1, ready 5 and ready 15.

Plus, all the battlestars would have had full power available. Even discounting inertia, once you get the fleet moving, more than one of the battlestars would have escaped.

2) Military Ports within the Colonies
Example, Pearl Harbor, 1941. While most of the battleships were dead in the water, the Nevada did attempt to sortie. She almost made it.
Other smaller classes did actually break out and join up with a few heavy cruisers that were heading into the harbor.

Some of those ships would have sortied, and been able to escape the attack.

3) As the fleet of refugee ships gather, vipers on long range patrol could have been used to bring in the scattered military vessals.

Okay, the plot of one lone capital ship escorting a ragtag fleet is a great story line, not much would change if there were more military ships in the fleet.

So, I would have gone with that scenerio, adding a spin off series of 3 heavy ships, fast battle cruisers dispatched ahead of the main fleet searching for earth.

This series, "The search for Earth" deals with different situations, and finally, they discover Earth. The lost tribe. The monitor our television channals, catch the gameshows, sitcoms, soapoperas, CNN.......

And send down a medical team to pick up subjects to find a cure for the dreaded cylon virus that must be responsible for the mass insanity on the planet.

1. The battlestars were on "stand down" due to an order given by the Council President. This was a Peace Accord, and he wanted to show NO hostility. Stupid, yes. But on his part. As you well know, Adama had his Vipers ready anyways :)

2. Other military ships *possibly* did escape. It is unknown if they did or not. Out of those that were at the Peace Conference, *only* the Galactica returned to the Colonies. Other battlestars *may* have taken off in the other direction.

Planetside, we only saw a VERY small aspect of what happened on just ONE of the colonies- Caprica. The planetary defenses were sabotaged as well, so who knows what defenses were at the colonies themselves.

These things weren't plot holes. They were just things not shown/talked about on the show is all.
