Hi guys,

I came over here to take a closer look at Santee's New Galactica mesh. I though that you would like to see what I did over the last couple of years.

When the ortho renderings of the Galactica were posted online I started making blueprints. They turned out pretty good. I didn't have a rear view at the time I first posted images of them online so Lee Stringer contacted me and gave me the missing view. Here is a link to the prints in PDF. They are 4MB so be warned;

I then went on to to a CG study model in Rhinocerous. I had plans to make a big model so I wanted to be sure I got the forms correct and nurbs give you a lot of options when you want to do machine processes from the model. Here is a rendering:

I used this mesh to generate hull slices to make a maquete for the 22.6" model I plan to make. The small study model proved so popular that I had to cast it. Here are some progress pictures and a buildup;

Right now I am taking a closer look the detailing on the surface of the ship and inside the landing bays. The bigger model will need more detail and I need to get more of the greeblies figured out. Hopefully I will be starting the next one in a few weeks.

Oh. Here is a page where I have a naked Classic Galactica hull. I hope to get back to this latter next year;

Wow man, that is frakin' nice!
Now, when you say that the small study model proved so popular that you had to cast it, does that mean that there's a way for us to get one?

Yeah. I farmed out the original to another caster. When they go into production the people on a waiting list will get the kit before it goes on Federation Models' website. If anybody wants to be on the list just go ahead and email me at;

cobywan@comcast.net

It may be a couple of months though. But I understand that molds are being made right now.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The suppor tof the online community really helped be keep going on the little guy when things got frustrating.

Santee's project makes me think I need to learn Lightwave but whenever I look into it the procesas of polygon modeling is completely foriegn to me. I use Autocad a LOT. Rhino is very much like Autocad and I just love nurbs. For the most part. The nose on the Galactica was harder than you would think.

I've seen this before. Great artistry and best compliments on your work.

I'd be interested in doing this an article on this for AllGalactica.com. I've got another one for Santee's CG model as well.

Thanks for the compliments. It sure would be a great idea to have an article about the construction of the original on a web page instead of spread across 6 different message boards. :)

Email me some details of what you have in mind.

Cobywan This is some awsome work you have there. I know it must have taken a lot of time getting all the detail in there, my hats off to you.

I did download you pdf file a while back and am still using it as reference materials, Thanks a lot for that, it will make my job just that much more easier.

I also like the progress on the old Galactica as well, this should turn out to be a real treat for the folks here.

I got some motivation to get back to work on my Rhino model. I am going back and correcting some stuff I noticed when making the little model. This is all prepetory for the bigger model I am going to start soon.

Thanks, . . I found that this is the most labor intensive part. but no matter how much one is scared of it, you have to add the details becuase that is what makes the vessel.
Anyway, but the looks of what you have already, I am sure your model is going to rock . . . . :D keep me postd on it.

OK. So I finally broke down and started to actually pay attention to the lighting in the ZOIC images. Silly me. Should have thought of that before.

What I did was use the basic Rhino renderer and ran it through Photoshops Lens Blur filter. That really gave this un-textured render some life. Simple little things can make a huge difference.

There is a new picture here:

Ha hahahahahhahah!... :rotf:

No! :D

I am working on a mesh version. It is way too big. It's already over 5 million polygons. I think I need to do a little optimizing. :D
