Ok, Im ready to conceed. Im liking the origional series better. OK, you win, Im an official TOS fan, and am on board drinking the juice and glad to be. Ill take human heros and some idealistic behavour over the wonder women of GINO. As a girl, I do like a strong female lead, but Sheba provided that. I liked the idea of GINO, it could have been great, some things about it are awesome, but over all, it has dragged into some kind of hourly memorial to SuperStarbuck. I never dreamed I would hate that name, but I started to. Is there anything that *itch cant do? Geeesh, it just got too much with the whole not being over come by lack of oxygen before the guys were. Im sorry, as a girl I know that my ability to function w/o air is limited to my bodies ability to store it. I have smaller lungs, Im not going to get as much from the air left. Therefore, I will succome faster than a guy who has a slower metabolism and can get more from the air. Also she smokes, so that should limit her ability to process air greatly, but NO in the end, she saves the day. So far she has pretty much done it all. Good thing they brought her along, they would all be dead by now without her.
Ok I ranted. Still, I liked Starbuck as a guy (nice buns) and he was funny, thoughtful, usually, and typically very human. He had weaknesses. Girls usually. But he couldnt do EVERYTHING. Even Apollo was limited in his abilities. Im very dissapointed in GINO, it started out ok, but has steadily grown worse as each episode becomes more and ore unbelievable.
The realistic environment is good, the broken down Vipers, the lack of supplies, the gritty dark feeling, I like. I hate the shakey camera, the wonder women, and the total disreguard for authority by the "officers." On the other side I was chatting a bit about that, dont bother looking, it isnt that great, im a lousy debater, so anyone feeling great about out debating me shouldnt feel that great, I stink at it so it doesnt take much to beat me hahahaha. Still, the total collapse of everything that made the origional series good, well, its all added up to a big zero. Great idea, but poor follow through. Maybe next time.. oh and Im interested in this "Movie" or other BSG series, but I hear Richard Hatch is having some trouble, hope it doesnt kill his dreams. He sounds like a great guy, and I hope maybe someday him and the guy that played Ryker on ST:TNG might get together and come up with something. Both are amazing writers and I love their work. Well, ta ta for now, Im here for ya TOS fans! Ive seen the light!

Welcome to the TOS club, Tabbi! The fact is, there would be nothing Galactica today if it weren't for the original and for Richard Hatch's self-sacrifice to bring it back to the consciousness of everyone over the past 7 years or so.

He single handedly revived this franchise (whatever form it has taken) when he saw that there was still interest from people he talked to. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.

His next BSG book should be out very soon, btw...

Wow, its wierd to have new "bed fellows" pardon the expression, but till now I honestly didnt see how you all could possibly not like GINO. Well, I shouldnt say it quite like that, I didnt want to see how, should be how I say it. I tried, I really did! Thanks for the welcome, Im glad to have ya as a wingman. So anyhow, let me know if Im straying from the path, as the newly beknighted are easily led atray ahhahaha.

Well, it shouldn't be hard to see that some of us do not like the new show when for 26 years all we had was the original! After that amount of time with something, anything else will pale in comparison!!!

I wanted a continuation and we got a total remake. You watch the new show and it does not immediately remind you of anything from the original. If you can't even tell from a cursory look at the show, something has gone totally wrong!

Tabitha -

(Love the name, by the way...)

I'd have to say that you're a rarity in BSG fandom!

Now, had you watched the original series before you saw the new series, or did you check it out later on? It's always nice to see someone that can appreciate what the original series had to offer. Sure, it's not perfect and has a weak moment or two - I don't think that realistically, there isn't a TV series that is perfect.

I'm really happy that you're enjoying visiting (or revisiting) the original series! Maybe you could check out some of the TOS episode review threads and post a review or two to tell us what you liked specifically, or what you thought didn't work.

Best,
Bryan

Ah Ha!! V8 supercars over nascars is it?? :D :D

Glad you are enjoying the classics, Tabbi..

However, I wouldn't let Johnathon Frakes (Ryker) near a BSG continuation after the Thunderbirds movie..'Home Alone on Tracey Island' was NOT the real deal..Team America showed marionettes could have worked with modern audiences, but that is another thread.. ;) ;)

Cheers,
Lara

Hey Tabbi, glad to hear you find joy in TOS. GINO is not perfect nor is TOS but TOS has charm, people you can admire and an adventure type epic feel to the story. GINO gets judged in a much harsher light, held to a higher standard by the claims of the producers. Ron Moore said, “Nothing less than the grand re-invention of the genre.”

Battlestar Galactica is probably older than you are, produced in a different television environment I’m glad you can see past its few shortcomings and appreciate why we might think it’s something special. :salute:

Welcome Tabbi,

I have to say as I die-hard TOS fan, that I really did try to enjoy the new series. It was the first new Battlestar Galactica in decades. However all the points you mentioned are what finally made me stop watching. Season 2, episode 6 was it... I have not watched anymore. And I don't miss it in the least come Friday nights... or even wonder if it was any good. For me the negatives just outweigh the positives.

I always knew BSG would need updating for a new audience, but this is far beyond it.

Glad you are enjoying the original series as well. While not the "realism" that series have today, I have to say for being produced in 1978 it was far more progressive than people give it credit. Aside from the beginning of "Lost Planet of the Gods" (which has its dated/embarrassing 70's view) it portrayed men and women fighting together. Sheba was equal to any warrior and her being a woman was never an issue.

I love strong female characters in film... Ripley, Buffy, Sarah Connor... However it seems to me with "Super-Starbuck", that there is something to proove. Maybe Ron Moore has to reinvent the woman as well. It seems from interviews that Ron talks like there was never a woman in a stong position like this before, that he is twisting the expectations around. For me he did. He proved that he could turn what should be a strong capable woman into a pure unbelievable b*tch. Hey, but maybe its just me.

Tabbi,

As long as you are a part of ANY Galactica fandom, Battlestar Galactica is still alive. :)

Respectfully,
Martok2112

P.S. I myself had not heard of any BSG tabletop RPG...although when I did have the old Star Wars RPG under the West End system, some friends and I had adapted the system to play Battlestar Galactica. :)

Great, welcome Tabitha, to the side of light and all... but uh, I've been trying to figure out what GINO stands for. It's the new show, okay, but the letters?

Great to hear you've joined the TOS crowd, Tabitha! Welcome aboard.

3DMaster - GINO stands for "Galactica In Name Only" (and face it, that's what it is, whether the fans of that show can see it that way or not.)

Thanks for the site addy, I did go there and I will play there if they let me.
Hey I just found out about the final straw that killed the GINO side here. Wow, I was gonna reply to a topic when it said I was restricted, I was like, what?!?!? But then I got the e-mails and they sorta explained what I was feeling anyhows. Yea, I agree, any show that makes out that bad things done to people *I dont wanna glorify or in any way bring attention to the events, they dont merit it* should be rejected. I was offended, but I just htought it was cus Im a girl. Oh I finally did get to see it, and I shut it off and deleted it. Im SO glad I went to cheer my Devils on to beat OSU, rather than watch that crap. (Can we say crap on here?) I guess I did, well if not Im sure someone will send me something saying dont do that again ahahahah
Well, as Bush 41 said, "Your time has come..." and it did and it went. I AM SO GLAD I SAW THE LIGHT, before this day. I dont know if I could have held my head up and supported that show after this, its so much easier to be on the right side, the side that stands for moral decensy, for clarity of character, and for good BSG!!!!!

Thanks Lady, I will, lately the Dr has us hopping. I took off last weekend to cheerlead the ASU/OSU game, but by the time the bus got here to pick us up, some of the girls had left, so we ended up just watching it, but still it was a great game. So this weekend Im doing my intership hours as well as working, Im afraid cheer scholorships dont pay the bills so well...

Whats got Doc worked up so bad is the really wet fall we had, that means the squirrels and field mice are gonna be flurishing. Up in the four corners area, they have the Henta virus, its got about a 85% terminal rate, and it comes back everytime the varmits up there flurish, so I might be away at some point this winter, unable to post, to go on Doc's mission he does there for victims if or when it breaks out. Im hoping it wont, like I have so much time already, I dont wanna think about the drive time involved with fulfilling my scholorship requirements, as well as fulfilling my oath to protect life.

Wow, so RDM noticed me out here huh? Its sort of neat to think that it happens, but I wish he wouldnt have mentioned me by name, its tough to handle recognition. I wish instead, what he would have gotten from my posts and all, is maybe some kind of idea of how his work is effecting people. Maybe instead of seeing how I was introduced back to TOS, he might have instead asked himself, why are people being driven from my work to the work of a series that is so old and out dated? I feel that the purpose of communication like this is not so much to ask "who thinks like me" but to ask ourselves, "what do others think" and examine why.
Perhaps I was not clear on how a certain show failed my needs, or expectations, if so, my bad, Im not Roger Ebert. Still, I feel that the whole family here stated their views and reasoning why they felt that way much better than me. I truely wish he would listen to YOU, not me, Im not well spoken and humbly, my voice is only my own, and has no weight outside of my head. YOU ALL, everyone of you, have the combined weight of a large group of fans. It should come to attention to Mr. Moore, "Like Firefly" should be his motto. If he wants to know who will give him ratings, who will buy merchandise, who will incorporate his product into their lives and bring others to the program, it CERTAINLY must be the fans who hold a series more than 30 years old so dear to their hearts. Movies, TV shows come and go. There have been so many that had a fan base, but that show and its fans are now long gone. Few shows have such die hard support as the origional, and only BSG. Were I Mr Moore, I might ask myself, "What might I do to create and include more fans like this?" and then do so. Do what? Well, if one cannot find those answers here, then one isnt looking too terribly hard.
I dont believe I ever spoke directly about Mr. Moore till now. I indeed never spoke directly TO Mr. Moore till now.
Mr. Moore, I do not dislike you, I dont know you, as you pointed out in your glowing letter to CF. I am honored to be noticed, perhaps star struck for a time. It may be a misuse of my tiny fraction of fame (said jokingly), to express that I wish you the best of luck. I do hope you succeed in all that you dream of. I also hope, sir, that you perhaps tone down the dark drama, give the heros some heroism, allow TOS fans to find something they can hold onto in your series, and help us, the fans, to come back together as a family.
I cannot write your show, I wouldnt dream of doing so even if asked, which I know would never happen besides. I cannot repair the rift that was formed by the unusual and often conflicting style you write in, compared to the style of TOS. I also cannot give you or anyone advice that is guaranteed to work, to make your BSG fans, and our BSG fans come together as a family. I do, call it intuition, have a feeling that by bringing in some of the core elements that we as TOS fans, hold true and dear, and also give GINO fans their dark brooding reality, that you will find you can win back the hearts and minds of all BSG fans and that surely must be a good thing. Also if you can have a pilot with the call sign Tabbicat... but then thats a lot to ask hahhahahah
In closing, I just want to thank CF for their medium that someone as brave as Mr. Moore, and someone as insignificant as me, a mere fan, can find a common ground to actually hear each others words directly, and to exchange some small amount of mutual admiration or at least civil respect. Thank you also Mr. Moore for your courage to address a seemingly hostile audience, as well as to be gracious enough to respond to the angry words that have been exchanged in a thoughtful and welcomming maner that you have. It was a good thing.

Well doc is wavering on going, his wife is raising a stink (first I heard he was married) so I dunno what the future holds, which is the way I like it. When one knows the future, one has little to look forward to, as it is already committed. I like never knowing whats around the corner.
