Sci Fi Channel Sucks!

This is a board where all can voice their discontent with the bad turn Sci Fi Channel has taken, with their barrage of b-grade original movies and tv show, including their molestation of BSG and EARTHSEA. All SFC trolls will be promptly booted.booted.

The new BSG in not B-grade, and if they remade Space 1999 Id like that too.

Spider's referring to the b-horror flicks on Sat. night. The people that produce them consider them B-movies following in the footsteps of the 50's & 60's B-monster movies. There was a write up in Wired magazine last fall about one of the in-house producer groups that makes them for Sci Fi.

I think a lot of sci-fi fans from many shows have reason to be hesitant about how sciFi could potentially handle their favorite story: BG is only one example of messing up the core lore of an original piece and making it something different. They are also known for cancelling a series they laud a heartbeat later if it doesn't make their numbers.

Oh the so-called horror flicks, yea I agree about them, if I see one mor advertisment for a monster this or a giant that, and they are all snakes or fish or something stupid. If Scifi really wanted to test their mettle, they could make a series or mini series about Twilight 2000. If you dont know what that is, google it, its a facinating idea. Other ideas that could be more interesting would be maybe bringing back Space Above and beyond, maybe just a few changes or a reimagination of it, but anything other than more stupid monster movies. I like the Ghost Hunters stuff, its exciting, but the critters gotta go...

Sorry, but I think the nu/fake bSG is at the very core of the b-grade programming. It fits right into Skiffy's original programming of garbage.

Are you saying their "monster of the week" saturday movies are BETTER than this incarnation of BG? :wtf:

Well, lately, I would vote that the monster of the week is better, yea... especially lately

I don't even give that garbage (the movies) my time. I suppose they're cheap to make, though.

I thinik their all equally bad. Nu/fake BSG has the Hummers in space, the Pierre Cardin shirts n ties and American jazz in space, and all used to an alien civilization. It's insulting to my intelligence. ...not to mention boring. ...and the women are domineering and the men stupid. Whatever.

The only thing that I watch on Skiffy that is worth my while is on Wed. nights. I am addicted to Ghost Hunters. I find that show is very good and believable. The rest of the stuff they show lately is crap!

Hey! I watch the two Stargates and Firefly :)

Those are well worth my time! (Well, I'm not really watching the reruns of the Stargates - I saw them all so I'm catching some of the new network shows instead)

Well, that's different since SHOWTIME created SG-1 and FIREFLY was created by FOX? I was referring to all the originally produced SFC garbage like nu/fake BSG, TREMORS, MANSQUITO, etc.

I only watch a couple of show on the sci-fi channel, SG-1, Atlantis, and Ghost Hunters. Otherwise the rest of what they show isn't worth watching.

I only watch a couple of show on the sci-fi channel, SG-1, Atlantis, and Ghost Hunters.

I watch the same shows regularly in Scifi, that and Firefly now. As for the movies, I really hope they do less monster movies and more fantasy or scifi movies. The ones they made were good, I repeat, not hollywood material movies but very entertaining. Although I have to admit that I see maybe three horrors movies and like it(Shame on me) but hey two were about vampires and I just love stories about vampires. Well, definitely B kind of grade but it was interesting. :rotf:Let's see I have see and like the following movies:
1- Absolon - My truly favorite, just love it.
2- Alien Siege
3- Anonymous Rex - Can't believe I like it but I like it and enjoy it.
4- Deep Shock
5- Descent
6- The Fallen Ones
7- IF2- Interceptor Force
8- Mindstorm
9- Momentum
10- Out for Blood
11- Riverworld - My second favorite, just love it.
12- Species III

Hum! See, I have see a lot of the movies. Looking forward to see Cerberus(Not to sure about this one, but will try it) and Lost Voyage. Also have to say that love some of the mini series they have make like Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars, The Dune mini series and Earthsea.

Looks like I'm seeing too much Scifi channel. :yikes:What I really don't enjoy is how they treat their series except Stargate. (Farscape)

Some complained about what sci-fi did to Dune. Said it wasn't anything like the original. I agree. It was much BETTER than the original movie. Much truer to the book, IMHO.

All I watch on sci-fi now is Sci-Fi Friday.

Gee, aside from NASCAR, Lost, and Survivor, that's about all the TV I watch anymore. I think everything else is garbage (with a few exceptions--CSI, L&O (the original), my local news)

Riverworld;
Dune
The Cube
That is about it in the movie department.

SG series is watchable.

I used to watch Master Blaster for laughs.

Skiffy pulled it. Rotten shame. I enjoy rocketry-especially when it doesn't launch and you draw straws to pick the guy who has to go out and check the connections to the bird! :rotf:

Cheers! :D

Yeah, I have hear both good and bad things of Scifi Dune. I personally have to thank them because after see it(now own both mini in dvd) I decide to read the books. And I just love it. I'm a Dune fan thanks to the mini-series. I have to admit that I have see the Dune movie version with Sting and the other some scenes but it wasn't till the mini-series that I totally get into Dune. So I definitely can't complained about it. ;)

My complaint is that 99% of the self-produced garbage on SFC sucks. Science fiction/fantasy genre movies are the biggest grossing movies at the box office. Why is Bonnie Hammer and Eick totally squandering a great opportunity to make SFC one of the highest rated cable channels on the air, by filling their schedule with self-produced, cheap crap? It's like they have such a low opinion of science fiction/fantasy fans... "Oh, they'll watch anything, as long as it has CGI in it, no matter how cheap and small amount, and hot chicks." They should be fired.

Agreed! Wouldn't it be great if Speiberg & Lucas purchased SFC? ...some of the biggest innovators in the genre, who have a love and respect for the fanbase!

Bonnie Hammer

Biography

Bonnie Hammer was named to the position of President, SCI FI Channel in April 2001. Charged with the mission of “unlocking the value” of the Channel, Hammer leads Universal Television’s focus on the future growth and independent success of SCI FI. She oversees all facets of SCI FI’s growing businesses, including programming, licensing, marketing, magazine publishing and SCI FI’s award-winning SCIFI.COM Web site. She was named by Hollywood Reporter as one of the “Top 100 Women in Entertainment” for both 2001 and 2002. In December 2001, Variety named Hammer as one of “20 Breakthrough Women” for the year.

Under her direction, the Channel has experienced record-breaking ratings, distribution and viewership growth. In addition to ending 2002 as the fastest-growing basic cable network in primetime, SCI FI became the first basic cable entertainment network in history to deliver more than 5 consecutive weeknights of a 3.0 HH ratings or higher. Distribution of the channel has risen 60%, from 50 million to 80 million since Hammer took the helm, moving SCI FI from a mid-sized to a fully distributed network. The Channel’s overall programming budget and ad revenues have more than doubled since Hammer took charge of programming in 1998. [...which doesn't take into account cable tv's natural growth over the years, despite her mismanagment of SFC]. :/:

Hammer has guided SCI FI Channel in becoming a leading producer of original programming, with a focus on big event movies and miniseries. Since she took the helm, SCI FI went from 2 original scripted dramatic series per year to 8 – making SCI FI a cable leader in original dramas. Today, the Channel is recognized as one of the industry’s leading producers of highly anticipated television events, like the ground-breaking Steven Spielberg Presents TAKEN and the critically-acclaimed Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune.

The stunning success of the TAKEN miniseries marked another milestone for SCI FI by earning the Channel its very first Golden Globe nomination. The history-making 20-hour presentation also made SCI FI the #1 basic cable network on television for its two-week run. A new project with Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television is also currently in the works.

Under Hammer’s leadership, the Channel has become a bona fide draw for Hollywood’s top talent. In addition to working with such heavy hitters as Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Clive Barker, Susan Sarandon and Dennis Hopper, SCI FI currently has a number of high-profile miniseries in the works with some Hollywood’s leading film producers, including Bryan Singer, Dean Devlin and Gale Anne Hurd.

Originally joining the company in programming in 1989, Hammer most recently held the title of Executive Vice President, General Manager of SCI FI Channel. Prior to that, she served as Senior Vice President of SCI FI Programming & USA Original Productions -- heading up the programming and scheduling of SCI FI, as well as the development of original programs for both SCI FI and USA Network. She also served on the board of directors for the industry’s CableACE awards. During her tenure in programming, she was responsible for a number of aspects of USA Networks’ programming, including the development, production and supervision of original fiction, reality-based series and specials. Additionally, she was given the challenge of attempting to pump the ratings for USA’s languishing WWF series, working in partnership with Vincent McMahon to transform the franchise into a ratings stronghold and cultural phenomenon. Hammer also created and executive produced USA’s nationally-recognized Erase the Hate campaign, which earned a National Emmy Governor’s Award.

Prior to joining Universal Television, Hammer was a programming executive at Lifetime Television Network, [...well, well, well... What a friggin' surprise]!!! where she launched the network’s award-winning documentary series, Signature Series. The 1988 documentary, Gangs: Not My Kid, garnered Hammer the Women in Film Festival’s Lillian Gish Award, the Cine Golden Eagle and the National Association for Youth’s Mentor Award. Other documentaries she executive produced at Lifetime include Child Abuse: Innocence on Trial; AIDS: Dying for Love; Post-Partum: Beyond the Blues; and Once Upon Her Time.

Before coming to New York, Hammer was Director of Development for Dave Bell Associates in Los Angeles, where she developed reality-based programs and executive produced the talk show series Alive & Well. Hammer has also served as producer on Boston ABC affiliate’s WCVB’s top morning talk show Good Day!, and the PBS series This Old House, Infinity Factory, and the critically-acclaimed children’s series Zoom.

Currently, Hammer serves on the board of advisors for MPH Connective. The company provides professional grade media solutions for entertainment and education purposes – such as developing and producing educational film projects for museums, corporations, presidential libraries and medical centers, as well as a range of family-friendly films. Additionally, Hammer is a mentor for Women in Film & Television.

Outside of television, Hammer’s work as a photographer has been published in Time, The Boston Herald, The Los Angeles Times, and various Houghton-Mifflin and Little Brown books. She also co-authored the book Just Ask! How to Get Anything You Want Out of Life By Simply Asking for New American Libraries.

Hammer completed her education at Boston University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a Masters Degree in Media and New Technology.
