I have both verisons of Sage, the 3 hour tv pilot where Baltar lives, and the 2 hour Movie released in Europe where Baltar dies. Since, from what I can tell, both verisons are considered canon on their own, does this mean that TOS BSG can be considered 2 seprate contunities?
Just wondering.

What is considered canon by most is the fact that the "movie" version has a few scenes cut from the TV version, and of course, the TV version is definatly longer.
The TV version is the actual version (with more deleted scenes cut from it) because that's what it was intendedfor- TV.
The movie version is just the TV version cut up for a quick buck at the theater ;)
As for Baltar dying/living, well... we never actually saw his head rolling around, didwe? :D

I thought the Baltar's death version was realeased well ahead in several coutries, and was a intended theatrical release, then reedditted for the TV version when the decision was made to continue with Baltar through the (new) series. (But I would happily bow to Warrior's greater knowledge in these matters..) I saw the centurion swing at the cinema, and then many months later, the Imperious Leader stayed the action in the TV version..
There are several alternate storylines in TOS, some got filmed and screened, some just got filmed and cut.
Baltar's death is the filmed and screened sort, Serina's illness and death is the latter (Jane Seymour even explained in at least one interview that she played Serina from the motivation of a woman with a terminal illness, and was surprised she survived in the final edit!, as she was renewed and then was written out in LPoG anyway as she had other contractual arrangements) Some storylines were intended to be telemovies and then cut up and extended later.
Video release versions are different to the DVD versions, and the taped from TV versions I have are different to both.
So canon is a little flexible, but generally the story flow for TV takes precedence over the Baltar has been executed alternative, and over the books, comics and any other interpretations thereafter.!
Of course, on that yardstick, G80 is also canon....and that was definately a different reality..
TOS fans would have killed for a definitavely complete DVD package, with ALL deleted scenes included, and a couple of restored alternatives to choose from, but Universal declined to go the extra.
From what I heard about the UK vs US TNS eps from series 1 having differences in scene length and position, perhaps TNS fans are going to have the same sort of discussions with the TNS DVD release?
BTW, Eric Paddon has for many years written excellent tidy-ups of the TOS eps, that correct many of the rushed and inconsistant weaknesses in the TV scripts. Now they are NOT canon, but they can be a damn good read, showing what the eps may have looked like if they had had some further development and refinement before shooting.

Lara, yes the theatrical versions were released first... for the quick buck *and* to gage interest.
But the show in fact really was created for television.
The theatrical version is actually the television version chopped up, and that not only means scenes, but cropping as well! The top and bottom of the screen visuals were chopped off to give it the "wide screen" look.
I agree about the cut scenes... as I understand it, there were enough cut scenes to literally have made thie 3 hour television version into a 4 hour version!
...and that was just the pilot!

Thanks, Warrior,
Our release dates down here have always been screwed up., and back when TOS was first release, we got precious little info unless you had the (big) money to get the scifi mags.
Even now we see DVDs on the shelf before the series airs, and have to rely on internet to know if something of interest even exists.. (then wait for the DVD..)
:D :D
Cheers,
Lara
