Lucas Talks Pre-Phantom Menace Movie

Posted By Joshua on May 28, 2005

OK, so we're still skeptical, but apparently the rumors about a pre-Episode I Star Wars film by Lucas himself somewhat have a leg to stand on. On the heels of the second weekend in theaters for the madly successful Revenge of the Sith comes loose talk from the creator himself about the future of Star Wars.

William Ellis chimes in with the first word on the subject:

Well, it surprises me that TFN and other sites didn't report what Lucas said at the 2nd session at C3. He was asked by a fan "Is there any chance of us ever seeing movies in the Knights of the Old Republic Era?"

His response? "Well, we have a TV series and an animated series and depending how those do, this is something we might someday visit ... but it's too far out to really commit to anything."

I posted on your forums and the official forums and it seemed to be ignored but I heard it, and 3 friends heard it and my wife heard the same thing. I know I wasn't imagining things.

Then Mark confirms the action with this follow-up:

Josh - saw your post on this and though I'd throw my 2 cents in...

Lucas, very quickly and very briefly touched on this in his second
presentation at C3. I think everyone got caught up in the TV news, but he did respond to a question about allowing other directors to make more Star Wars movies and commented that this was under consideration and that this era in particular was one that he had in mind. Nothing set in stone, but he did make it sound as if it were more possible than not.

Former TFN Staffer Chris also heard this quote and makes an observation about it as well:

Lisa and I were in the second session too. So was a friend of mine from Texas and she heard the same thing about an "old Old Republic" project being a possibility. But I wouldn't read too much into it: it seemed more like an idle thought that he was just bandying about after the questioner posed it to him.

Interesting. Again, don't celebrate just yet ... but anything is possible, which is more than we could say a week ago. Stay tuned.

I think it would be better if they did Knights of the Old Republic as a tv series instead of a movie.

I agree with you, shugotenshi it would be the best way to tell the story of the old Republic using the jedi. What about going forward from Luke and Co and tell the storie of the rebirth of the jedi. I understand that you would not get Harrison Ford or Carrie Fisher but I woulld think that Mark world be game ...

Yeah the Thrawn Trilogy would make good movies

I need to elaborate more on this subject since I have more time today to post.

I've been thinking about what I'd like to see as a T.V. Series after Jedi and I've pretty much of the oppinion that they should cast people who looks alot like Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill when they where younger and take it right where jedi left off.

My main reason for this is because I want to all the events leading to mara jade and luke skywalker getting together played out on screen.

Of course mara jade is my favorate character, which is why I'm bias to this approach.

I also think they should shoot a second series at the same timethey produce this, to air at the end of the first, with mark showing future events like the forming of the jedi...

Anyways that's my oppinion.

I would have no problem with new younger actors playing these parts of Han Solo Luke and leia if needs be. I to be honest would prefare the continuing story of Luke and Leia after the event in ROTJ.

I think that the old films ruin the new films, as we alread know what happens I would like to see the Jedi rebuilding to see a Heir of the Empire type story.
I have not read all the new books I tried a few but some I could not get into at all
I don't believe that all the force of the Empire surrendered to the alliance. so that world offer some good stories also.

You could have OB1 and Yoda Qui-gon even showing up from time to time perhaps even Anakin?? it a long shot but I am sure that the current stars would enjoy a revisit to the star wars universe.

I to like the mara jede story in Heir to the empire

Here's a good place to get information on the expanded universe (which is what the novels are classified as)

What did you guys think of the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and does that worry you about how the Star Wars series will turn out?
Me, I'm terrified because of that.

I think the new tv series needs to be untapped material. If you continue from ROTJ, there is a lot of EU stuff on what happens after the end of the movies...for example, the Thrawn trilogy.

The best areas to explore are years before the prequels or in between eps 3 and 4...

Young Indiana Jones was a series about a teenaged Indiana Jones that quckly developed into the run-of-the-mill kid save the world hollywood cra....

Anyways, I'm not afraid of what happened to Young Indiana Jones happening to Starwars TV.

However, only the EU material that has lucas' blessing is cannon. Everything else is... just that everything else.

Thus a series set after ROTJ would do well, cause it would only need to include the EU stuff that lucas oks.

Of, course a live action clone wars would be cool. Never really got into the cartoon because of the style in which they drew the characters and the overall animation.

Personally I want the knight of the old republic... I also want to see Mara Jade on screen, so...

EU = Expanded Universe. Expanded Universe is everything in the starwars universe pass return of the jedi.

Mind blowing, and so much like I have dreamed about seeing in a SW movie for 2 decades.

Lucas was interviewed on CNBC a couple weeks ago and he said he would never make an expensive movie again because of the risk of piracy. He said he lost tens of millions of dollars due to the leak of revenge of the sith. (But the movie is still the highest grossing of 2005.) I personally find it hard to believe that he would allow something that trivial to determine whether or not he makes another star wars movie, but who knows....

 What a guy. I just made several hundred million dollars profit if not billions. Now I'm pissed I didn't get those thirty million more, 'cause you know, if I got a billion dollars those extra thirty million allow me to buy a 10% bigger country. Sjeez.

Showing the Jedi Order at a time when the Sith were more prevalent and the legenedary Jedi that were mentioned in the later times of the Old Republic might hold promise.

I think Star Wars is dead to me. I lost faith in Lucas...maybe some day some else will come along when Lucas is pushing up daisies.

The Star Wars TV series is going to take place during the 19 years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. It will focus on characters who have not been prominently shown in the movies.

And, speaking of movies, according to my sources, Lucas has said that he is going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. He also said that Luke was going to be the last of the Jedi, and told Timothy Zahn that most of the books he wrote, more commonly referred to by people as the EU (Expanded Universe) are not canon, thus never took place.

As far as The Knights of the Old Republic goes, I also think it would do well as a series.

And, as far as younger persons playing Han, Leia, Luke, etc... someone once told me that they were going to remake Episodes IV, V, and VI with Harrison Fords son playing Han Solo. But, like I said, That's just something I heard.
