Whoooooooooaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!
Wow. Just....wow. My mind is still trying to take in what I just experienced. It was very different in style and storytelling than any other SW film. It was definately better than both prior Episodes, but I am a fan of the first two so for me that does say a lot. I loved it. Definately going to see it again several more times. Lucas really did good with this one. It was so well executed that some badly acted scenes from Padme had to be forgiven.

The story was deep and this was definately Palpatine's movie. The way he manipulated Anakin and seduced him slowly, taking him closer to where he wanted him to be, was done quite well.

Where do I rank it? There are some who call it blasphemy to like a prequel better than the Empire Strikes Back, but while TESB has always been my favorite of the SW films, it is now my second favorite.

Yes better than TESB.......

Forgive me I've only had two hours of sleep........I saw it last night at midnight ;)
My mind is still trying to form the right words to describe what an amazing episode this is!
14th is right on with his reiview, it is a deep story with a dark telling of what happened to make Vader, but still had elements of the classic that made this one worth seeing more than once! It will have you on the edge of your seat :D

Loved it

I was close to tears in certain places, don't know if I sound say which, since it may spoil the movie for some people.

I agree some scenes were really pulling on my heart strings, and others had me on the edge of my seat with excitement. I have a whole new view of Vader now that we know what happened. ;)

local newsrag even gave praise and smashing review! Went to the mall where its playing to see the matinee times for Sunday and the woman said there was 800 people at the midnight release! According to the morning news, it already has taken in 16.5 mil for just the midnight showings! That is a stunner, so it has to be worth it!

It is worth it!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing, truely. The only thing that surprized me is how emotional I got.......Wow, I mean really. I just was feeling everything and I let myself feel it. It touched parts of my spirit I can even explain. I guess that sounds silly. I know some people who not fans of SW would laugh. I know this series has its faults, but I am just stunned. I was right there inside that world feeling and experiencing everything. That is what Writers/creators/directors.....etc hope for. My hat is off to mr. Lucas. he has always insipired me, but he outdid himself with this. I think I personaly experienced it in a whole different level then some people and for that I am thankful. It is nice to have something you love completed.

Dude, when I went to C3 (SW: Celebration 3 in Indianapolis) they showed us a five minutes series of clips from the movie, scenes that had not been seen in the two movie trailers or anywhere at any time, and in each showing, 600 jaws in the room hit the floor (as yours did during the film, no doubt). I called my buddy Mike (who couldn't make the convention) from the Con during lunch and told him how intense and also how emotional the new scenes appeared to depict the movie to be, and how stunned I was by it. I then told him that that night me and our friends were going to the digital theatre in the Con to see TESB, but that we weren't going to bother seeing any of the othes while there. Mike told me, "Of course, that's because TESB is the best SW movie of all." I told him (this was April 21), "Dude, in one month we won't be saying that any more...I have foreseen it!" Mike saw it the same night I did (different states) and then again the next day, and I'm seeing it again today. I do believe my prophesy was accurate!

I would be very careful. Take the advice already given. There is a scene where a group of kids, while not shown being killed, are murdered. The scene cuts away without showing anything, but there is no doubt that the children were cut down. That might be very disturbing to a 7 year old so be careful about that. And when Anakin recieves his horrifying injuries that require the life support suit, you might want to cover your son's eyes, maybe his ears too. Do you have an extra set of hands for that?

Not silly at all. It was a hella emotional movie, the most of the series without a doubt IMHO. I wholeheartedly agree with everything that you wrote.

When you saw Vader's face as the helmet was being lowered to be put on, that look of pain and fear, despite how evil he had become, did you not feel a shred of sympathy for him and how he'd been tricked and turned? I know that I did, and I did NOT expect to feel sorry for Darth Vader at all.

I am hopefully going to see it again today.

Now I have to wait a few months to actually see it in theater (There is a built-in 3-5-7-... moths delay for us hungarians SIGH!!) Now I have to shut my mouth and put a lock on it, under threat of severe injuries if i tell a thing to my friends:)

I'm really courious about the Director's cut edition...

May 21st, 2005, 03:59 PM
I didn't have a big problem Portman, I didn't think there was a lot given to her. I want to read the book. I found it very helpful with episode one and two to read the books...........it added so much to what they were thinking which is honestly hard to act(not impossible but diificult) For example in Episode two it goes into detail how much Padme wants children and a family. She is around her sister's kids and loves it so much and longs for children of her own. She is tired of politics and people who just use you for what they want. So it makes sense that she is completly devestated when she looses the dream after waiting and wanting it for so long.. I had guessed the cause of Padme's death over 10 years ago and Goerge played it out exactly as I had envisioned it! Wild huh :)

I agree with ya Julix. And I plan on seeing it again on my next day off...and maybe even again that same night if I so choose. Episode III had so much happening at once, especially in their space battles and ground battles, it was impossible to catch everything. :)

I loved it,too. I've got to see it again and again. One funny thing that happened at our midnight showing..everybody just about died laughing. There was a mother there with her 5 year old..way to young ..however, he was so cute...Wasn't in the showing where i was. anyway, there was a dude there dress up like Vader..whole 9 yards...well this kid had a toy light saber and marched right up to Vader and told him..and I quote.."Me no like you Vader" and proceeded to wham him on the legs full force with his saber.
After much growling by Vader he started toward the kid and dropped his saber and ran screaming for "Momma". good thing our man in black had a sense of humor.
We had 6 showings at midnight and well over 1500 people there.

Julix -

When I went to the 9am matinee this morning, I saw quite a few young children. There were even a couple that brought their Kenner toy lightsabers... I kept thinking that the more cerebral character moments would go right over their head, but all the kids stayed quiet. Considering the tone of the story, it went quite well.

14th and Julix- Thanx for the welcome, much appreciated.

I heard about a Falcon appearing in the film, but have no idea where. I can only guess that it was during the opning space sequence. There's no way I'll see that until the DVD comes out. I did wind up seeing the Tie-fighter/X-wing bit in AOTC, but only upon very close DVD inspection.

As far as young kids go, when I was down visiting my friend Vince in South Carolina during the premiere, we took his 5 year old son to the film and he loved it. I simply believe that anything too grown-up went right over his head, and for the graphic images, they probably left his mind as quickly as the entered it. That said, it certainly earned it's PG-13.

Hey Bryan.......
At the second showing I went to it was packed with kids and they were all quiet during the film as well. I am not sure what to think of little ones seeing it. Violence in SW is a bit different then violence in other shows it seems.......but it was just so emotional........maybe it did go over their heads.......I don't know, I still hold with see it first and decide for yourself about your child.......My daughter no way......she is very sensitive(wonder where she gets that) My son.........has the book and we have told him he can see it in 6 months when he is 13........he is special needs so he is behind where he would be if he hadn't been born premature. he is fine with it and kind of excited that he will be 13 and then see it.

I got to see Ep. III on Sunday, and it was superb (I really want to see it again) - its probably the best of the three prequels...... I will admit to have gotten a bit weepy by the end of the film, tho  (but don't tell anyone, ok!)

I was surprised to see a lot of younger children at the showing (esp. under 10s) including one dressed as Darth Vader wielding a toy lightsaber! They were obviously quiet during the film, but about two-thirds thru - I definitely could hear someone snoring (or just a bad Vader impressionist!)

In all - two thumbs up!

Saw it, loved it. I have yet to see it a second time. I will reserve ranking judgments until then. I was surprised at how desperate Palpatine seemed at times. Not as strong as I imagined him. However, it could be he was masking his true power in the first fight against Mace Windu. Yet I have to believe he gave Yoda all he could muster.

Exactly, He Had to Have Used the FORCE Power Far See: to Help Him Glimpse into the Future & Create the Entire Plan ... He all But Came out and Told Anakin he was his Father. Looking Back on The Phanton Menece: Qui-Gon Jin askd Anakin's Mother about the boy's Father... She tells him "There was no One"... Now, Flash Forward... Palaptine tells Anakin he Knew "How to Create Life"... BINGO!! and at that Point: Anakin Pledges his Serviece to Darth Sidious...Throwing Away His Chance for Redemption and theGalactic Empire begins its Assent to Power ... and Total Domination of the Very Galaxy itself. :yikes:    :wtf:

Sci-fi, were you being funny? Owen Lars is not Obi-Wan brother, he is Clegg Lars son, Clegg married Shimi who is anakin's mother. Beru and owen married and took care of Luke that is why Luke calls him Uncle owen and her aunt beru. Owen and beru were killed by stormtroopers in ANH.

Ok,
Palps said in his talk about Darth palgis(who was his sith master) he said, it was said he(palgis) was so powerful he could create life through the mediclorians. Now he did say he taught him everything he knows and then proceeded to kill him in his sleep(palgis) so it is a possibility that palps or palgis concieved ani that way........but unclear.............

couple things here .................

Not being funny at all, although there has been a lot of controversy about it over the years. It was in the ROTJ script and later published in the ROTJ book. In the Jedi Apprentice series, in book number 3 or 4 it has young Obi-Wan remembering his past. He talks about his brother Owen. GL later says he changed his mind and it's another "Owen", not Lars, but it was in the "official book". So whether or not one chooses to believe it's canon or not, it's up to that individual. Do a search and you will find half the sites say no and the other half say yes.

Personally, I only go by what is shown in the movies, but a lot of SW fans use and view the official books and comics as part of the canon. So one may be forced to juggle the "writers mistake" or GL's change of mind or whatever, depending on the conversation at a particular SW forum. Blame it on Lucas for filling in the gaps in the SW movies with his books and comics, saying it's part of the SW universe, and possibly causing the confusion in the first place.

:salute: :Nsalute:

Here's one scene that's not featured in the theatrical release of Episode III, just before Obi-Wan and Padmé arrives at Polis Massa for medical assistance (after the fight):

On the isolated asteroid world of Polis Massa, Yoda meditates and hears the spirit voice of Qui-Gon Jinn. The voice tells him that there is a way to merge with the Force and retain consciousness after death. In order to learn this power, Yoda declares himself an apprentice of the spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn.

I loved it. it had everything I expected and more. Even my husband liked it!

I was in shock at the number of parents bringing under 6 yr olds to see it without thinking of the shock and events of the movie that made it so dark in tone. Don't they have any common sense to screen it first before bringing the kiddies?

Thanks Sci-fi for clarifying that..........
I didn't know about that aspect of Obi-wan. There is so much outside of the movies and it is hard to keep track of it all. i have heard about what you said about Yoda and Qui=Gon, I have started the book and am very excited to read that part :)

That's what happens when a brand name is associated with family entertainment.

"It's Star Wars. It'll be a family movie."

Probably the ONLY way that many parents would not have brought the kiddies first would've been if Episode III had gotten an R rating. Otherwise, PG-13 is for today what PG was back in the pre-PG-13 days.

Perhaps by today's standards, Episode III still is a family movie. I don't know. I don't have much of a family anymore, so I cannot experience the impact that others may feel. :)

Fortunately, where I was, no under 6 yr olds went into shock over a lot of what happened in the movie. Or, to put it the way one might see it in the end credits of a movie:

"No pre-6 year olds were mentally scarred during the viewing of this motion picture." :D

I do have to admit, when I saw one group of parents bring in a child in a baby carrier, I groaned slightly. But the only reason I did was because I equated it with bringing in a cell phone that still had its ringer turned on. Thankfully, the infant made no noise.

Going back to the whole PG to PG-13 matter. I can probably guarantee that if a movie like Raiders of the Lost Ark (with its rather graphically violent scenes) were made today exactly as it was back in 1981, it would most likely have gotten a PG-13 rating instead of PG. Temple of Doom got a PG rating as well...even in the early days of PG-13dom. (even with its heart ripping scenes). Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan would also most likely have gotten a PG-13 if it were made today exactly as it was back in 1982.

Actually, if memory serves, it was 'Temple of Doom' that ushered in the PG-13 rating. I believe it was the very first film to get that rating.

But I digress, I managed to get my wife to see ROTS yesterday and when I asked her what she thought of it afterwards, this was her response: "It was pretty much what I thought it'd be. A lot of laser fights and stuff." Ugh. Oh well, I knew going in that she wasn't a SW fan, even a little bit. That said, she was gracious enough later to ask me a few questions about certain things that occurred in the film and about the saga in general. It was obviously done out of pity, but I appreciated the effort nonetheless.

A friend of mine, who is doing a PHD on Volcanoes reckons the Lava in ROTS was flowing too fast :D

here is my thing......just the sound alone is damaging to little ears. It is way too loud. In fact when we bring the kids to a disney movie, if it is too loud I go tell them to turn it down.......

I noticed that too. It was a very loud movie!! In fact, my ears already were aching even during the loud previews!!!!

What's with all the violent movies nowadays anyway? All they were was guns and blowing stuff up...I must be getting old :)

Well,
the thing is loud for us adults is one thing, but kids/babies hearing is more sensitive and easier to damage.

About to see ROTS for the 4th time tonight! It'll probably be my last theater viewing. I don't want to oversatuate myself with it. The DVD will give me ample opportunity for that.

when I go where I know its going to be extremely noisy, I would probably do the same thing like bringing some hearing protection.
