Galactica from the heart

Battlestar Galactica was one of those shows that was able to have a real connection with the fans. It was one of those shows that had more heart then any other aspect it obtained. I realize that heart is a combination of many things so here are a few things that stood out to me in 1978 and still do today as I watch the box set .

1. Lorne Greene was that kind of person that would speak the words "follow" and all would do as such because he had that fatherly thing down pat and a very strong presents . Everything about him showed leadership. I think the key aliment to making a character real and believable, is showing both sides of that character. You need to show their strength at crucial times but you also need to show their weaknesses and compassion because we are all human and obtain those attributes. Lorne Greene was able to convey all of that and contributed in a big way to the heart of Battlestar Galactica.

2.Richard Hatch as Apollo was perfect for conveying the dire straights of the moment. It seemed like Apollo was affected the most out of all the characters. When ever others where taken by something that would distract them from their predicament, Apollo was right their to bring them back to reality. Apollo had to keep pushing his friends and family towards their goal because he was someone that would never believe in something only part way. Everything was all or nothing for Apollo and he truly believed that even the smallest of decisions might mean life of death for his people. Even though his people couldn't see it at time's, Apollo had the wisdom at an early age to know the greater good for his people. this would be a great attribute for the fleet and eventually towards replacing his father as commander. I can't see anyone doing a better job with this character then Richard Hatch because his approach at this character was perfect.

3. Dirk Benidict played the character we all wanted to be, well us guys wanted to be Starbuck and the gals just wanted him, but he vastly became the most liked character on Galactica. My personal belief is that he got away with, and got to do a lot of things that we couldn't so we were all drawn to that. You know it's kind of funny when people try to put this character in a category because over the run of Battlestar Galactica's 24 episodes, Starbuck has shown many different sides of him self. He was indestructible, mad, sad, happy, curious, and confident to just name a few but there were many sides to starbuck that Dirk Benidict brought out during Galactica's brief run and only an actor of that caliber could do that.

4. Terry Carter was also a strong father figure in the Character of Tigh. He seemed to have less weaknesses then Adama but had a friendship with Adama that was unbreakable. If Galactica would have gotten a second season, maybe we would have found out what made this friendship so strong . A prequal would have also shined light on this. Tigh was a very strong military presents and never second guessed him self but had the great wisdom to listen to reason and take it into consideration. The best part about Tigh, are the things we didn't know yet or at that time . It was that unlocked chest of information we were yet to learn and to this day, we still need to unlock this well of background information.

5. Cassiopeia was that character that set a great example for those
who wish to better them selves. Those with dreams and the ambition
to make them happen with pure deturmination.Even though she along with
all the others, were fighting to stay alive, she chose a more active
Roll in the fleet and contributed to their survival.
Laurette Spang played Cassiopeia with great intelligence and shattered
the single minded belief of the 70s that all blonds lacked intellect.
The popular belief was that Starbuck had control over the 2 women in
his life but if you pay attention to the actions of Cassiopeia over
the 24 episode run, you will notice that Cassiopeia is the one with the
most control over the love triangle. She even shows wisdom in how
she speaks to starbuck about Cain. Many attributes about Laurette Spang
and how she played that character were unnoticed at the time but if
we look at this from the heart and think about how she contributed to
the show to make it Battlestar Galactica, then the obvious becomes
clear.

6. Sheba has to be the one character that acted from the heart the most
, even a touch more then Apollo. She was also the best warrior in the
fleet and had the actions to prove it. Ann Lockhart made this character
come alive with such convictions,loyalty, passion and strength that
She became a huge part of Battlestar Galactica and that's no small
task for one who comes into a show halfway through the season. Sheba
cared the most for those around her and in later episodes you can see
this in how she looks out for her love ones . It seemed that
she always had Starbuck and Apollo's back covered for the most part.
Sheba is another character that would be fun to catch up with and see
how she made out over these last 25 or more Yarhens. One always had
the feeling that her character was destine to not only do great things
but to also reunite or find out what happened to her father.
Ann also had those beautiful eyes that had most of the male fans
falling in love with just one look. For an all round skill of acting
and ability to breath a real passion into the roll of Sheba, Glen
Larson made an excellent choice of bringing in Anne Lockhart.

Cassie was the female character I most liked and admired: she had the smarts to deal with Starbuck or Cain or any of the testosterone cowboys around her, and was caring as well as tough. I always thought her a woman ahead of her times (in network TV terms) and largely undervalued by the fan base. It was very fortunate that she didn't get written out on Carillon

I could never quite get to the same level of admiration for Sheba. Simply she cried too much. I found her character was patchy in its writing. None of this is Anne's fault and she did great stuff with what she was given, but Sheba I just wanted to slap silly waay too many times!!

7. John Colicos was a fellow Canadian on Battlestar Galactica as was Lorne Greene and just as Lorne Greene, John had a background in the theater.

Most people think of Baltar as one who was over played and thought John went a little to over the top but How would one act if they were hungry for power while being insane with greed, desperate for domination. Would that character be laid back and calm? I highly doubt it.

Every move Baltar made was basically out of desperation. The fact that he was always one step away from supremacy with the Galactica getting that extra step up on him was the one thing that always fueled his rage and torment but in the end it even furthered him away from his goals.

One felt sorry for Baltar at times because he was the victim of his own mind.
Baltar always thought he was much more then what he really was and for that we knew he would never achieve any kind of piece within himself.

A soul ravaged by the need for domination that forced him as such to make a deal with the Devil. A deal that even if executed to it's full extent, still would never fill the empty space within and for that, he would be sentenced to live a life of eternal torture.

With a character that had so many hidden demons, I think John Colicos was the only one with the look and ability to play Baltar. I think Those who think he went way over the top, Might have missed the drive that put this character in that predicament in the first place but then again we all are affected in different ways by different performances. One thing is for sure, John Colicos gave us one of the most memorable villains in the history of sci fi with a degree of drive matched by no other.

I could never quite get to the same level of admiration for Sheba. Simply she cried too much. I found her character was patchy in its writing. None of this is Anne's fault and she did great stuff with what she was given, but Sheba I just wanted to slap silly waay too many times!!








If Sheba seems weepy at times, I just put it down to the pitch AL's voice sometimes hits when she's getting emotional. I have heard her voice on other things, and it's the same. As to SHEBA, well, maybe it is understandable. She spends two yahrens stuck away from home in an enemy-controlled region after a disasterous battle, then discovers that there is no longer any home to go back to. EVERYTHING is gone, except her beloved father. Now, he too is gone, and she's on a ship full of people she doesn't know, headed towards a semi-mythical planet out of some ancient religious text. I'm surprised, given all that, she hasn't ended up in the ice cube room by this time. Many would have.

It's great to see how those perfomances effected us in different ways. What one person finds as a lack of writting, another thinks of as a heart felt perfomance.

That Episode is My All Time Favorite, and That is the ONLY thing I Would've Change, I feel it was Baltar's Determination to Have his Final Revenge on Adama that Made Him so Dangerous... Being Human, he knew how Humans thought... and Being a Fellow Member of the Orginal Counsil of the Twelve... well, that Only Served to Throw More Tillium on the Fire. :wtf: :(

Back in the '70's... it was a Toss Up Between Baltar & JR Ewing... the Bad Guys We all Loved to HATE!! :heart: :mad: :wtf: :)

I guess it was Adama's Character that kept him from practicing marshal law on Baltar. I think the rest of the fleet might not of had such a problem with it because in hard times, it's human nature to want someone to blame for their hard times and Baltar was rightfully to blame.

I alwas loved the way John Colicos played his badguys .. far more memerable than most other shows. Darker Dramatic and sooo much fun to watch :D
