Well, I must say tonight was a rather cool night. So, here I am with Rockbox, playing on Bourbon St. (at the Famous Door) when it turns out that someone looked rather familiar in the audience. I couldn't quite put a finger on it, but I knew this person looked familiar.
A few minutes later, as we're playing, Tim, one of the guitar players in the band (and a good friend of mine for well over 10 years) tells Eric (the primary singer) that we had a request for Life in the Fast Lane from someone in the crowd. I vaguely heard the name he mentioned. We played the song, and I sang lead on it. (I also sang lead on Sweet Child O' Mine later...oy, that's always an ordeal. :D )
Anyhoo, a few minutes later I asked Tim if that guy was who I thought it was out in the crowd, and sure enough it was.
Tom Keiffer, lead singer of Cinderella, was out in the crowd watching us. Total coolness. And definitely a cool guy.
After the show was over, we got to hang with him for a few minutes. I apologized to him for not sounding so good tonight (which I sounded better than the last couple of days which were afflicted from some kind of cold or congestion I had).
He said: Dude, you actually sounded real good. And you did a good job singing Axel Rose, man. I doubt even Axel can sing Axel anymore.
Most flattering, coming from someone who had one of the BALLSIEST voices in the 80's.
I'm still trippin', even though celebrities are a common occurrence on Bourbon St.
WOW.
I'm just gonna keep trippin' for a bit.

That is cool beyond words dude! Especially his statement about you singing Axel better than Axel. To be complimented on your craft by someone who made it big when you were growing up, looking up to, is one of the highest forms of flattery I can think of. :salute: Rock on, dude!

It was very flattering, I tell ya. Tom loved the whole band. And he is one of the coolest people to talk to.
He apparently makes frequent trips through New Orleans, and he has an open invitation to come up on stage and jam with us whenever he's in town. That would be THE coolness right there, to jam on stage with a rocker like that.
I wouldn't say I did Axel better than Axel though. (And he didn't say I did it better either. Just that I did a good Axel.) :D Believe me, even Tom admits that singing Axel Rose is "difficult". Besides, I had my share of problems singing Guns and Roses anyway. Crowd participation is a beautiful thing. :D
I told Tom as an anecdote that when I hosted karaoke in Wisconsin, that a girl that had listened to me sing a few other power ballads asked if I could sing "Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone". I told Tom that I crossed myself, and tried, but couldn't even make it past the first verse. He laughed, and said," I do that every night, dude. (Crossing himself in prayer.) I'm amazed I still have a voice." What a cool guy.

Tom's got a pretty inspirational story. It's a real tribute to him that he's kept going after several throat surgeries and a recovery that took most of the 90s.
If he rolls thru town again Martok, initiate him into the cult of Galactica for us. :D

Thanks, Amber, ((((((((((((AMBERSTAR))))))))))))
Although to hear me these past few days, you probably wouldn't think my voice was much beyond shredded vocal chords.
Frag,
I do get the impression that (well, despite all our sins) that Tom Keifer is also a man of faith. Should I get the opportunity to meet him again soon, hopefully we'll be able to sit down and have a good talk about that.
And I'll try to see about his interests in something called Galactica. :D

I think I am over it, but now, my voice needs to heal over the next couple of days. I just hope it does. Singing through a cold is a witch with a B sting. I wish I had the kind of pull/clout to say: "Sorry, but when I get a cold...I do NOT sing, as it is damaging to the voice. Would I ask you to play bass/guitar/drums with a broken wrist?"

That kind of talk would never fly in Def Leppard. ;) :D
