Battlestar Galactica 1978 RMQ Conceptual Classic Galactica

we have all seen the conceptual design for the Galactica made by Ralph McQuarrie

So I am having a go at it .. I hope to catch the feel of it and stay true as possible
but at the same time I want to build the Galactica as I would like to see it .. so there will be two versions ,,

this is my version with a cross bar from the main hull too the landing Bays ..

It took days to get the Head to look right for me ....
for the model makers here I am going to build in the details and just have a basic texture for the hull .. (I hope )

Cool!

It's about time someone had a serious crack at this.

The crossbar is a logical progression so I don't think there's any reason to beat yourself up about it.

Good luck with it!

Peter

Thanks Peter .. I want as much as my PC can handle with this .. and I think it will be more forgiving that the film version
I leave that to Don Willit .. I also going to give it a landing bay as seen in in the pictures by RMQ , but to keep the poly count down .. maybe I'll use a texture for the Ceiling area of the bays and build the internal area as I did with the landing bay for the fan film ..... ..

this will be for release too ..

Oh and here she is without the Cross bar ..

They look to be on the same level to me.

I like the lit slots on the painting better than the holes on the filming model.

I'm thinking they just fly out and are not catapulted out like on TV.

I've long thought someone should tackle the RMQ style ships, and the Frazetta Vipers.

Fantastic!

Thanks all. I removed the Engines and will redo them .. Narrower and more of them across ..

I am also going to use the basic shape and build on that and make the fleet as based on the Book ..

The I remember a paragraph ..... Adama looking with pride at his ship. seen how much sleeker it was
compared to the other ships in the fleet ....

So I was thinking that the colonies would perhaps use a basic frame the works and each colony would
add there own refinements ..

so I'll make the fleet .. each of the 12 ships with there own designs styles .. weapons placements .. etc ..

Are you basing them all on RMQ designs?

the ship is been scaled for a Mile long .. bty and the detail shapes are just for reference and can be altered later ..

I'll be copying the design of the lasers and launch tubs ..

as you can see in the rear shot I added a red engine to break up the line of blue
ones .. .comments?? or ideas .

Well, I've always wanted to see the Frazetta Viper and Raider made up as 3-D models. I've always thought that they'd be great as older models of the ships in some kind of prequel.

Oh, and maybe try to have any markings a gold/yellow in keeping with the RMQ Viper paintings.

I think it looks great.

The flatter panels and rings really work IMO.

Carry on!

How are you going to shade the hull? The painting looks like it almost has sort of a slight sort of olive green tint to it.

I give the hull a texture and refection .. I try a few Gray/blue hues and then the lighting for a scene will play a part
too in 3D .. but I have not thought that far yet ..

Looks good, although the domes throw the symmetry out.

Should it be perfectly symmetrical?

Aren't systems mirrored engineering? Or if there's one of something, it's put somewhere that follows a true line, like putting a radar dish on the spine of a plane.

I don't know. That'd definitely be a question for an engineer or someone who's maybe served on a battleship I suppose.
