4. Action Alerts: For All Battlestar Galactica Fans

Post Office Mail the Universal Entertainment Group

PRESS RELEASE: "BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (4-hour miniseries) - SCI FI re-imagines the groundbreaking and beloved series in which 'a rag, tag fugitive fleet' of the last remnants of mankind searches for its true home. Fleeing the aliens responsible for the slaughter of their homeworld, the Battlestar Galactica survivors must meet a whole new set of challenges. This intriguing twist on a classic will be written by writer Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission Impossible II) with Breck Eisner (Steven Spielberg's Taken; The Invisible Man) attached to direct. Distributed by USA Cable Entertainment, the Project will be executive produced by David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Spy Game)." The new miniseries is a re-imagining, and not a continuation, of the original Battlestar Galactica series, and may not include the original cast, characters, and themes! Send a post office mail to the Universal Entertainment Group! For more information, visit our Battlestar Galactica revival information page.

Important announcement from Michael Faries of BattlestarGalactica.com: "This may be one of the most important polls I've ever posted in my history within this fandom. Let's just say that script rewrites are being ordered. And it would be interesting to see what fans might want in a Battlestar Galactica PREQUEL. There are three poll questions below. Please provide an answer for each one within THIS discussion thread; do not post elsewhere. At minimum, please answer questions #1 and #3." The poll is important, so be sure to participate and make your voice heard! The poll is available at the following link at the Battlestar Galactica Club Forums, and is also available at Colonial Fleets and the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard.

The five primary Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions are available for you to sign and show your support for Battlestar Galactica. The five petitions listed here are endorsed by BattlestarGalactica.com. Petition #1 is the Battlestar Galactica Revival Petition to signal the sincere hopes that original cast members (and their characters) be considered for regular roles in the new Battlestar Galactica pilot/ongoing series. Petition #2 is the Battlestar Galactica DVD Petition to urge Vivendi Universal and Studios USA to seriously consider the release of ALL episodes of the original Battlestar Galactica television series on DVD/VHS formats. Petition #3 is the Battlestar Galactica New Series Petition aimed directly at the current Sci-Fi Channel happenings and utilizes stronger wording. Petition #4 is the Battlestar Galactica Fight for Survival Petition to support the new Battlestar Galactica production only if it is done right with direct linage of the original series and includes core members of the original cast in their original roles and includes the original Galactica ship. Petition #5 is the Battlestar Galactica Sci-Fi Advertiser Boycott Petition and states that the thousands of fans are left little choice but to fight back in the only way left to us. We will vote with our wallets and pocketbooks. To those advertisers on the Sci-Fi Channel, we caution you: Beware! We will boycott your advertised products for a period of two years if you sponsor the Battlestar Galactica re-imagining on the Sci-Fi Channel. These are five petitions that are endorsed by BattlestarGalactica.com and BattlestarPegasus.com. Sign the four additional Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions

The four additional Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions are also available for you to sign and show your support for Battlestar Galactica. The Battlestar Galactica Richard Hatch Petition respectfully requests that Richard Hatch make his trailer, "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" available to be shown on the Internet. Richard Hatch -IS- listening! If you agree with the petition, then sign the petition to make your voice heard. The Battlestar Galactica Sci-Fi Management Petition requests a change in management at the Sci-Fi Channel. The petition urges the Sci-Fi Channel to focus more on sci-fi programming, including Battlestar Galactica, instead of broadcasting non sci-fi television shows, or axing sci-fi shows that have done well, such as Lexx and Farscape. The Battlestar Galactica Save Starbuck Petition is a humorous petition, but for a serious matter: Ron Moore's new Battlestar Galactica mini-series script for the Sci-Fi Channel calls for Starbuck to become a female! Starbuck, one of the original series' most popular characters, becomes Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the new mini-series, and "Starbuck" is merely her radio call sign. If you want Starbuck to remain a male and make your voice heard, be sure to sign the Battlestar Galactica Save Starbuck Petition. Finally, the Battlestar Galactica No Re-Imagining Petition is a succinct petition that supports Richard Hatch's "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" continuation concept over the Ron Moore re-imagining felgercarb. You can make a difference, so be sure to sign the four additional petitions, after you sign the five primary petitions!

A Statement From Dirk Benedict

Tracy B. posted Dirk Benedict's response at the Sci-Fi BBoard regarding the recent cameo announcement from FilmJerk.com: "Dirk has asked me to post this here on his behalf. It's brief but to the point. 'Dirk Benedict has not been contacted and therefore has not been offered any role of any kind in the Sci-Fi Channel reimagining of BSG.' Straight from the horses mouth folks."

Ready for a bombshell, kids? Read this.

FilmJerk.com posted a report at the Sci-Fi BBoard today that is already up for debate: "Earlier this week, Richard and Dirk were both offered cameo roles in the planned BSG remake. However, and I cannot stress this enough, these roles are NOT in their original show roles. I have no indication at this time which roles they were offered or what their responses were. My source informed me that the SCI-FI Channel believes bringing Richard and Dirk (and possibly other original series actors) will pay sufficient homage to the original show and give something to the fans. For clarification: A cameo role implies a walk-on appearance, with possibly one or two lines, usually only for one brief scene." This report, however, is already debatable, based on Dirk Benedict's response from Tracy B. at DirkBenedictCentral.com, also posted at the Sci-Fi BBoard.

Bill Gates is a Battlestar Galactica fan

Michael Faries just posted an interesting report at the Sci-Fi BBoard: "In case anyone is interested: One of the founding members of Microsoft is a big fan of the original Battlestar Galactica. (Note: ORIGINAL, not remake.) - E-mail reached BG.com last year on this. - An offer was extended, too, last year for a key piece of Galactica's props. A very generous offer. The owner of that item opted to decline the offer, though. It was confirmed who made the offer, too. (By not citing specifics, I hope the owner doesn't take exception to my public mention of this.) By the way: Microsoft has the XBox version of Vivendi Universal's Battlestar Galactica game. I don't know what advertising tie-ins with the new series are planned. (There were prior discussions with the former production to have Microsoft as a sponsor.) I doubt Microsoft has any desire or swaying power to affect the current Battlestar Galactica remake, but I understand that one of the world's richest people shares a love for this show which so many of us do, too. Btw, no public statements are coming from Microsoft or Mr. Gates. But I thought you'd all like to know."

Additional Galactica Shorts

New announcement at The Independent Battlestar Galactica Page: "January 20: Added part three of, The Judgment of Starbuck - Part Three. Requires RealPlayer. File size about 47 megs (high speed Internet access only). Here is the third segment of a new episode of B.G. TOS. I call it 'The Judgment of Starbuck'. This takes place a few yahrens after the Hand of God, Adama orders an attack on the Cylons (Apollo is now missing). The attack meets unbelievably strong Cylon resistance. Starbuck's ship is badly damaged and has to crash land on a planet. The fleet manages to beat back the Cylon resistance but must leave to avoid Cylon reinforcements. Starbuck encounters a Cylon wreckage and he will face the ultimate test of his soul from the Beings of Light. This episode is the Return of Starbuck with Doctor Zee eliminated (except for some narration that can't be edited out without losing some of the story. Just pretend its not him. The ending is different in the sense that THERE WILL BE NO DOCTOR ZEE. That's all I will say. I believe it is perfectly compatible with the TOS and makes a good setup to a Tom DeSanto script which has been leaked by S2K. Starbuck will have a special destiny to fulfill to a new generation in a DeSanto continuation." Thanks to kingfish for posting the report at the Battlestar Galactica Club Forums.

Yes, I said CAMEOS and I said REIMAGINING. Not a prequel and not a continuation."

Attention Script Writers!

Darrell Lawrence of 3DGladiators.com has announced a new contest at his Colonial Fleets forum: "Here's a contest for ya, and there may be a prize for the best story *if* enough people participate. First, a good idea would be to watch as many episodes of Battlestar Galactica that you can (there is a marathon on the SciFi Channel in Feb. Check listings). The contest: Write a CONTINUATION conclusion to the series first season (in other words, not BSG-80). Once again, if enough people participate, a prize may be involved." Possible info on the Battlestar Galactica DVDs...

Possible DVD News from Michael Faries: "I'm not sure yet if the information is reliable, but I did find this interesting. Apparently, the distributor (which distributor, I don't know) of the Battlestar Galactica DVD set had major problems with the DVD masters. As a result, they have to restart the whole mastering process from scratch. They've postponed the release date AGAIN and this time it is indefinite until they can re-do the masters and correctly complete the transfer process of all materials. In the case of Region 4's release, EzyDVD decided that they could no longer wait for the release. They canceled the orders until an official release date is confirmed. Regarding the Regions 1 and 2 DVD sets: I don't know. On a personal note, I still believe that the Region 1 release, for example, is being delayed due to marketing. I would also give credibility to the quality control problems, given the recent Region 1 'Back to the Future' DVD set snafu." Thanks to Michael Faries of BattlestarGalactica.com for posting this update at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard.

New Battlestar Galactica Canadian Newspaper Article

A brand-new newspaper article featuring Battlestar Galactica was just posted at the Battlestar Columbia-B web site. The article states: "THE PROVINCE - Friday, January 3. Battlestar Galactica. Vancouver remains the sci-fi world capital for the big screen and the small. The latter will be blessed with a four-hour mini-series and/or pilot regurgitation of Battlestar Galactica, which is set to begin filming in March. Fanatics will be donning their gear and staging conventions for this one, although so far they're outraged at some of the perceived changes to the original story. ('With a small remnant of humanity surviving aboard the last remaining Battlestar, Commander Adama and President Laura Roslin opt to make a run for it in the Galactica, hoping to reach the humans' legendary homeworld of Earth, while pursued through space by the fanatical, now humanoid Cylons.') It's going to be even worse during a full moon." Check out the new article just posted at the Battlestar Columbia-B web site.

Moore, Battlestar Galactica Petition Against re-imagining, We, hereby agree that, The Sci-Fi Channel and Ron D. Moore should not do a 're-imagining' of Battlestar Galactica and that they should respect the wishes of the fans around the world and what they want. That is, THE ORIGINAL CAST AND THEME, as prescribed by Richard Hatch. 'What they want is to see the characters and the storylines from the original series continued, only 24 years from where the series left off.'" Battlestar Galactica mentioned on "That 70's Show"

Battlestar Galactica was mentioned a number of times on a rerun of "That 70's Show". Scooter2000 reports: "I was watching an older rerun tonight of 'That 70's Show' and they made a few amusing Battlestar Galactica references. On the opening of the episode the gang are hanging out in Eric's basement. Jim commented that lately Kelso is never around on Sunday nights. Donna replied that he probably spends those nights with Jackie. Later in that episode Jackie angrily walks into Eric's basement and commented that Kelso blows her off every Sunday night because he likes to stay home and watch his favorite show, Battlestar Galactica. When Fez realized that it was Sunday night he immediately got up and ran home (audience is supposed to assume that he is rushing home to watch Battlestar Galactica). Then later in that episode Eric passes through the living room where Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty are watching television. All of a sudden Red yells at the TV 'Those Cylons are a bunch of Dumb-As*es' 'How do they keep missing a target that is so close?' or something to that effect. It was very funny and I am sure that even non-Battlestar Galactica fans were laughing when they watched it. Isn't that amazing? Another popular American sitcom makes another Battlestar Galactica reference. The writers even got the Sunday nights reference correct... and Ronald D. Moore said in an interview back in May (on one of his reasons for not wanting to do a continuation) 'no one in America remembers Battlestar Galactica.' Or he at least wanted to make us believe that 'No one remembers Battlestar Galactica' to justify his efforts." Many thanks to Scooter2000 for posting the report at Colonial Fleets.

Battlestar Fan Force posters arriving

New report from Michael Faries of BattlestarGalactica.com: "Members of the Battlestar Fan Force (fans who aren't standing idle while the show is being remade/reimagined instead of continued, as Larson, Hatch, and Singer/DeSanto tried to do) have started to release promotional posters (#1, #2 and #3 thus far). Click the links below for the posters, then visit the Revival page and BattlestarGalactica.com's script review to understand why a remake is being rejected."

Changes to BATTLESTAR NETWORK

Michael Faries has posted a brand-new article at BattlestarGalactica.com that explains the recent changes to the Battlestar Network, and explains why the member sites of the network are supporting the original Battlestar Galactica, and not the remake mini-series script (and possible production) from Ron Moore and the Sci-Fi Channel. The article is very well written, so be sure to check out the following link at BattlestarGalactica.com.

Mini-series recapitulation published at "Ain't It Cool News"

The heretofore silent "Ain't It Cool News" web site has posted their first Battlestar Galactica update in almost an entire year (9 months). The Battlestar Galactica news update is none other than a glowing review of Ron Moore's mini-series script. The article is written by the self-styled and incorrectly spelled "Muffet". Not only glowing, the review is downright incandescent of Ron Moore's script, including comparisons of the relatively unknown Ron Moore to the multiple Oscar-winning Action Director John Woo. With regards to the Cylon sneak attack on the Colonies, Muffet imputes "The Cylons can exploit that in order to turn the Colonies to thermonuclear dust – which you also get to see. No, not in 'The Day After' or 'Pearl Harbor' sense, IT'S BETTER THAN BOTH COMBINED." For the complete recapitulation check out the following link at "Ain't It Cool News".

New Missions for the Original Battlestar Galactica Revival Effort!

Check out the detailed Battlestar Galactica revival document just posted at Colonial Fleets. The document was compiled by Battlestar Galactica fan jjrakman affiliated with the Battlestar Fan Force: "The Sci-Fi Channel has drawn the last straw. The new 're-imagined' Battlestar Galactica is heresy for most BSG fans as presented in Ronald D. Moore's ideas. The Sci-Fi Channel has largely ignored BSG fans, and has fed us programming [felgercarb] for several years. So, call or e-mail your local cable and satellite companies, and ask them to permanently remove the Sci-Fi Channel from their packages. Also, call or e-mail or fax any and all advertisers who currently, or who plan on, advertising on the Sci-Fi Channel. Make it known that this action is a direct response to Ronald D. Moore's re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. True BSG fans want only a continuation of the original storyline, with original characters/cast. Make it known that nothing else will satisfy BSG fans. Let's hit the powers that be where it hurts: $. Ask Sci-Fi Channel's advertisers to remove their advertising, or discourage anyone from advertising on the channel or this website. Let them know that you no longer are watching the channel, and in fact have asked your local cable or satellite company to permanently remove the channel from their line up, as a direct response to the planned re-imagining of BSG." The document includes a list of advertisers postal mail addresses and web site feedback links that you can write to and make a difference. Be sure to participate, spread the word, and make your voice heard!

Update on Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming trailer

Michael Faries of BattlestarGalactica.com reported on the possibility of seeing Richard Hatch's 'Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming' trailer released to the Internet: "Since 1999, I've heard weekly, sometimes daily queries from fans and curiosity seekers (all of whom aren't rewriting, but are asking for the first time) if the trailer could PLEASE be released. I'm ready to go. You wouldn't believe the legwork that was done, but I'm ready. We'd need additional servers to help carry the strain. I imagine P2P (peer to peer) networks could offload some of it and other webmasters would step up to help out. But it's ultimately Richard's call. And a source of lost sleep for me. Here's what I'd ask: Write a letter to Richard. Sign Ojai's petition for the release of the trailer. Post it here or send to BattlestarGalactica.com, RichardHatch.com or BattlestarPegasus.com. I'll give every one to Richard. Again. He has his reasons, as frustrating as this sounds. The logic dictates that the trailer should be released. He's holding back -- and his arguments carry water. At minimum, he can readdress this publicly with fandom again. The trailer truly is amazing. I WISH it could be seen by the masses. It has to be Richard's call." Thanks to Michael Faries for posting the update at Colonial Fleets. To sign the Battlestar Galactica Richard Hatch Petition, be sure to visit the following link.

Michael Faries reports on the upcoming Battlestar Galactica DVD Collection

New report from Michael Faries of BattlestarGalactica.com regarding the upcoming Battlestar Galactica DVD Collection... "The Battlestar Galactica DVD sets for regions 1, 2 and 4 are essentially done, sans extra marketing additions. By that, the packaging design work and the glass masters are almost ready, but there's a catch... The current remake production. As before, when the region 4 sets were "delayed" in July 2002, the sets are being delayed for numerous reasons, including the addition of promos for the "new" mini-series. - Various folks know that if the original series is released now, then strong sales would draw attention to support for the original series... and to the fans and their cries for a continuation. This isn't postulation; this has been talked about. - They also see the DVDs as a marketing tool for the remake series. You'd see promos for the remake included on the original series sets. (What a slap in the face to fans of the original series, eh?) - Universal has a less aggressive release schedule for it's television archives-to-DVD than other corporations, like Viacom/Paramount and Fox. A delay from March 2003 (which had been discussed) to August 2003 wouldn't be a hindrance to them. - Universal U.S. has assumed a stronger position in the release of DVDs. It derailed the region 4 release, despite the legwork done by Universal Australia. - Richard Hatch's "The Second Coming" trailer isn't included. Preliminary talks with Richard were started early last year, but didn't get past initial talks. (I say that from first-hand accounts.) No formal proposal was delivered. No further steps were taken. I do want to praise Universal Australia for having the heart to reach out and try to make the BG set one of the best Universal television-to-DVD releases. I don't know the official details why Universal Australia had the project pulled -- and why Universal U.S. took over completely. - It's possible, not probable, that someone I know may see the DVD set before it's released. And if so, I'll find out what's on it. Universal U.S. was chartered to work on the extras, even when Universal Australia was still on track for the region 4 release. I know that Universal didn't budget much for the extras. Essentially, if some Uni folks took their own times to gather numerous additions for the set (and the additions were approved), then fans might be happy. Right now, it doesn't appear that Uni went gung-ho over the numerous leads/information which I (and a few others) provided to them. For example, I REALLY wanted to see lost footage restored, even if it wasn't cleaned up... I have heard that the restored, remastered regular television footage went through two rounds of cleaning and is fantastic. (I don't know if SCI-FI U.S. will bother to use any of the clean copy for their February 2003 BG marathon. I doubt it.) Also, no additional, special interviews were done. (And various cast members were all-too-happy to participate, btw.) No voice-over audio tracks were recorded either, from what I hear."
