Default Uniforms of the Colonial forces.

what exactly do we know about the colonial uniforms?
I just want to start this off, not offer a complete list, please add to it, and some pictures would be great if people can post them.
We see endless conjecture on the badges, and patches, how about the uniforms themselves?
Firstly, the types.

1/ Navy Blue Bridge Officer/Command uniform with silver and siver/black chequered trim. Black knee high boots.
Variations>
1a/ Ceremonial version: Addition of cape in same colour/trim, with necklace.

2/ Standard Beige 'Warrior' uniform: trousers and tunic, with gold and gold/black chequered trim. Brown knee high motorcycle boots. Blue gun belt with brown holster. Chocolate flight jacket for pilots 'on duty'? and the famous 'egyptian' helmet.
Variations>
2a/ Ceremonial version: Addition of cape in same colour/trim, with necklace.
2b/ Cold weather version: Addition of 3/4 length quilted blue, hooded jacket.
2c/ Commander cain version: stripes on trousers, gold 'laurel leaf' braid on shoulders of flight jacket.
2d/G80 variations: ??? Wasn't there a different helmet?

3/ 'Paratrooper' Warrior uniform: Black vinyl jumpsuit, small helmet, gloves, black 'sidi' boots, std gunbelt.

4/ Warrior 'Vacuum' Spacesuit. Beige padded jumpsuit, with piping trim, and shiny vinyl 'tubing' trim. Colonial badge on right arm. 'Bubble' helmet, big air hoses, gold backpack, std warrior gunbelt, black 'sidi' boots, sport type gloves (anyone know what type?)
4a/ G80 version:??????? (Did the G80 version have a different helmet? Does anyone have the ability to ost a screen cap from G80?)

5/ maintenance crew: Orange jumpsuit, colonial badge on chest? Gold 'hardhat'
5a/ G80 version: yellow with reflective stripes on sides?

This is just a starter, if anyone wants to add, correct my mistakes, tell us if you know the sources for any of the parts etc?
POST PICS PEOPLE!!!!

Just off the top of my head, there are at least three more:

1. Firefighter uniform. (Fire in Space)
2. Assault trooper/"doorkicker" uniform (Baltar's Escape)
3. Black Council Cecurity uniform. (Greetings from Earth Pt.1 and Baltar's Escape)

I'll see if I can find pictures.

Doh! Good point RJ&R!

Those 'black shrt' uniforms look basically like 'off the shelf' stuff modified slightly. Can't remember anyone ever coming up with a source for the basic parts though?

You didn't mention the "tucked" and "un-tucked" tunic variations.

Also: BLUE cold weather long coats? And you omitted the tan and white padded gloves and quilted insulated trousers on the cold weather version.

Just keepin' ya honest!

I never noticed the trousers on GoIPZ were quilted. Eeeep! I remember the parkas still being tan though.

G-80 helmets were more formed to follow the chin line instead of the more square sphinz helm of BG.

How many helmet types were there in G80?
They wear the usual Viper pilot helmet when they ride the bikes (with a chin-strap), the white angel ones for 'time travel', and there is the 'full face' MC helmet customisation... When exactly do they wear that one?

In Space Croppers. The "D" Squadron has a grey helmet with black "Egyptian trim" while Troy and Dillon wear the usual warrior brown with black trim.

I've got several Profiles in History prop auction catalogues with uniform pics in, I'll see if I can post them later when I get home from work.

There's stuff like Starbuck's Long Patrol tunic and the sub-zero survival coats and all sorts of stuff.

If you visit Ebay, look out for someone selling a Profiles in History Hollywood Auction 16 catalogue. The one with a a gold and silver Cylon either side of Twiki.

It's well worth the money.

Default Cool Helmet!

That helmet is intense! I think we need those!

Uugggghhhhhuuummmmm......Gordon????? Can you see yourself working some magic on this?

If the flight helmets went to silver, what would have happened to the uniforms? Any one have any idea if changes were planned?

I heard that a jacket was designed for Tigh but that he never got to wear it. My impression was that it was a blue version of a flight jacket, but that is speculation. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I am wondering if that is one of the things that swayed Richard to make some color changes in the Second Coming trailer.

I recognise the picture above and model's faces from also appearing on this page :

http://www.scifihobby.com/products/d....cfm?SetID=130

This means that the uniforms will now be cut up into small pieces for use in costume cards. Check out more images from this set on the page.

So is this a terrible destruction of original props....or very fair as it allows hundreds of fans to all share part of the original show ?

Thats weird, I thought I'd replied to this, I was obviously so upset, I didn't click to submit it!

I CAN HONESTY SAY, THAT MADE ME FEEL PHYSICALLY SICK!

As someone who's spent years trying to find some original props from the show, I think that to destroy these costumes is a fraking obscenity!
They can't even be bothered to re-photograph them, just re-use the PIH auction pictures.

My GF has bought me an original BSG costume for xmas. Its one of the spacesuits. Specifically it was worn by Kent McCord in G80, so would be one of the two from 'Fire in Space' re-used. The costume dept have removed a piece of the lining (where 'Dirk' or 'Richard' would have been written) and written 'Kent' a little bit lower (Presumably to avoid any ego bruising).
Anyway, that simple act of re-assigning it specifically to G80 may have actually saved it from the attention of these vandals and this terrible fate.
It wouldn't be so bad if they were using background costumes, or costumes of which there were dozens made. But to destroy important 'hero' costumes where they only made a couple in the first place is completely indefensible. Some of those are 'one offs' others like the IL cape are really rare.
Who wouldn't want to see them preserved?
Who for that matter wouldn't pay a few £ to see them displayed in a sci-fi museum?
They're over a quarter of a century old, and part of sci-fi history! Its sooo sad to do this to them.

I think that as a protest BSG fans should boycott all Rittenhouse cards etc from now on.

Must admit, I'm in two minds about this. It enables many fans to own a small piece of BSG history, for a small price ($2.10 if you pull a Costume Card from a pack) I own one BSG one already, the Adama uniform they released from the first set....and have to admit I'm very fond of it.

I also understand that cast sell their old costumes some times to this fate...

Although you're right, is the destruction of priceless sci-fi artifacts.

I have already written to the President of the company, asking of the head piece from Spectre's cape has survived, and if it could be used in fanfilms. If someone could get a replica IL head....a headshot of Spectre could authentically appear on a communications screen. I haven't heard back.

I don't know if the deed has already been done, and the costumes destroyed, but it seemed like a good idea. Maybe they'd want someone to make them an offer, and that part of the unique IL series cape would survive......

I have very mixed views......

ernie,

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the actors get to keep the uniforms. I think it's property of Universal.

I do NOT want a piece of an Adama uniform. I'll go visit it at a museum. However, I'll be thrilled to get a Sarah Rush auto'd card...

This argument has been going on for a LONG time. It all started with the baseball (and other sports) card industry when they were bloated with too many sets, and about to crumble under their own weight. Then they started tearing up priceless old jerseys/bats/etc and the market BOOMED!!! Unfortunately, priceless memorabilia is lost forever to scissors. This is just continuing the cycle. But as long as people keep buying the sets for these cards, they will keep cutting it up.

MIKE........whilst I wouldn't have thought the cast could keep their costumes.....there was a recent interview (At the Swindon, UK appearance I think) where Anne joked that only her kids could fit in her uniform now....and Laurette joked her husband loved the Living Legend jumpsuit. Didn't Tracy say recently that Dirk can still fit in his ? How would he know unless he still has it ?

So I suspect some cast were allowed to keep some stuff.

Looking at the promotional sell sheet for the new BSG set, I think Sarah Rush has written 'Launch When Ready' on all her auto cards as well as signing them !

I also think, despite the destruction of original costumes, it is important to support this company as they have licensed 2 card sets now which have sold well, and shown great merchandising support for the original BSG series.

If they release a original BSG card set, and fans boycott it and it fails....that will send a very poor message to Universal about the long term commitment of fans, and value of the original series.

I agree with fans that it is a terrible act to destroy the original costumes.....but owning one such card already, I'll have to admit I will probably get them as they are a fantastic item to own. So shoot me....they're probably already cut up, and a few dozen fans boycotting it won't stop them selling out. So I'll enjoy owning them.....

I hope you don't think I was attacking you Ernie, If you want to collect the cards, then thats your choice.

However, I don't agree that not buying some trading cards because they perpetuate the destruction of irreplaceable original props will affect any decisions made by anyone other than those who decide such wanton vandalism is acceptable.

As I said in my first post, these are not some minor background costumes, floor tiles from the bridge or flakes of paint from set pieces. If they were, I'd shrug and say 'oh well'.
At the moment, any BSG fan who wants to own a little piece of their favourite show can do so for as little as $20 for a cubit, or $100 for a minor costume. Not some fragment of a piece, but a complete and original prop.

The props they are destroying are important.
They have sourced some key 'hero' costumes that featured prominently in specific episodes, and destroyed them.
I really mourn the loss of these 'special' costumes. They were rare and old, lucky survivors of a classic show. Spectre's robe, Starbuck's red tunic, Tigh's Tunic, and the rest, all gone forever! And for what? The only message it sends, is that you can make more money destroying old props than you would get by selling them whole.

Trading card collectors are specialist collectors, and cannot be directly compared to the majority of BSG fans, who probobly won't buy these anyway.
IMHO a thriving trade in 'whole' props, would be more likely to keep interest in BSG alive.

A succesful run of these cards won't make Universal continue our beloved show, it'll just make Rittenhouse buy up the next lot of props that hits the market to do a series three.
So, even less of these beautiful props for future fans to enjoy, and the remaining ones become so expensive that they go out of the range of 'average' fans.
When Universal see that a Muffit costume sold for $30,000.00 thats an eye-opener! But trading cards are only ever trading cards, no matter what the subject.

Ernie, buy yourself a small complete prop from the show, an original one, just a cubit, or patch, and after a few months, tell me how many times you've picked it up and thought about it, or watched the dvd's and wondered if you glimpsed it on screen.
Honestly, it's well worth the money!

CD, no I didn't take it as an attack and you have not caused offence.

I don't actually know where to but original props.....any information on reasonably priced sources ? I know ebay, but I'm suspicious of anything there.

I disagree with you about the majority of BSG fans not buying this card set. Whilst there are many trading card collectors who buy anything and everything, regardless of which show it is from, I am only buying this set because it is BSG.

I also disagree with you about a successful run of these cards convincing Universal to continue the shows :

There are MORE new merchandise items being made from TOS nearly 30 years after the show was cancelled after 1 season, than TNS gets in its heyday after over 2 seasons.

The failure of original BSG merchandise could send the message.... that fanbase is no longer interested in parting with the cash for TOS. Only the repeated successful merchandising of TOS would show we're still interested....not boycotts.

I agree that its terrible that some of the costumes are being destroyed. I regret some, but aren't too fussed about others. Spectre's cape is very very unfortunate, but the Starbuck 'Long Patrol' tunic I can get over.

I fully understand your sadness at seeing some of these destroyed as it is worth more money to do so....but I still feel :

It is vitally important that fans support all new BSG TOS merchandise items.

(Once again, no offence taken or intended)

It's cool, we can agree to disagree.
As a reformed Cylon, I'm morally opposed to the death penalty, were that not the case, I'd be wanting those buggers 'spaced' for such a crime!

As for the props, there are sellers that are best avoided, and others that are fine!
Luckily, most in the BSG scene, are fabulous, and 100% honest. Just read the description carefully, to see if its original 'screen used' or repro.
If you want to get more into the props side of BSG, both original and repro, then go over to:

And get yourself signed up to post!
Alternativey, If you ever want to chat to someone else in the UK about it, then send me a message

Let's see, where to start...

Ernie,

I purchase in the secondary market. I won't buy any costume cards. I'll buy the auto cards, and the regular sets. Does it help sales? Well yeah, the big dealer I buy from will order more sets, so it will help sales.

As for their comments about their outfits, I wonder if they were speaking in general terms. Does Anne need to have her outfits to know whether her kids will fit in them? Maybe, maybe not. Would Laurette's husband need to see the outfit to know whether he liked it or not? Probably. Would Dirk need to have his uniform to know whether he could fit in it. Not necessarily. I know what size pants I wore in high school/college. Maybe Tracy would know for sure.

CD,

I'm sure there are a lot of reputable BSG prop dealers, but there are some that aren't. Those cubits for example. There was a maker that made replicas from the same materials way back when, so I'm not certain that if you even held a real one next to a replica that you could even tell a difference. I've also seen a couple uniforms sold as authentic that couldn't have been real, but sold for outrageous sums just the same. So in like all things, you need to do your homework before purchasing. Not saying that it's all fake, but you do need to do more than take their word for it.

Mike
Cubits are a bit of a special case. Apparently they made them in quite large numbers, and bucket loads of 'genuine' excess ones were sold off in Starlog magazine, and as you say, there are vintage replicas that look virtually perfect. Not to mention the fact that there are at least two distinct types of real ones, and some variation within those two types as well. So you can get 'real' ones cheap, but you're right that you need to be careful.
But that said, most 'recently made' replica cubits are obvious. The detail is lacking, the metal is nasty and cheap, they are a tad small, the colour etc.
I'm not saying just buy and don't use your head, as with anything on ebay or elsewhere, look at the dealers reputation, what they sell, look on the props boards to see what other collectors think about them etc.
I don't think BSG prop collecting is the kind of minefield that some collecting genre's are, so I wouldn't want to put anyone off of enjoying it. But you're right, that you need to keep your 'eyes open' and not let enthusiasm make you leap first.

You know, I just thought of something: what about rank insignia?

We all know that officers seem to wear two pins at the throat/collar, and enlisted seem to wear one pin centered at the thoat....

Soooooo.....Where are the "rank" insignia's?

To the best of my knowledge, the little pins inherited from the US Army Counter-Intelligence Corps are the only thing we see...but it's a big fleet -- if you've never met someone in uniform, how do you know their rank?

Default on a related note...

There was a 15-yahren reunion in Los Angeles in 1993. No, I didn't go, but at the time, you could buy VHS copies of the convention from the organizers. (No, they are no longer available. No, I don't know if the organizers are still around to sell them. No, I don't have the means to make copies for you!)
Anyway, in the video, the actresses talked about their outfits, and Jeanne-Pierre Dorleac talked about the creation of the women's gowns. This is what I remember off the top of my head from the videos:
The actresses (both the main characters and the extras) weren't supposed to keep their outfits. But they did. Many of the female extras wore their dresses to parties at the time.
Both Anne and Laurette kept their black jumpsuits, and Jane kept her wedding dress. (You'll have to ask them yourselves if they still have them.)
And furthermore...
Many of the male warrior extras' uniforms ended up being used in the Battle of Galactica ride at Universal Studios. They were worn by the guys who were hired to do the battle. The outfits eventually just wore out.

Hmmm.
Well Laurette still has her jumpsuit. I didn't ask Anne if she has any props still. Richard doesn't have any, and neither does Noah. Jack brought his 'Second Coming' red flight Jacket to the convention, so I guess it's possible he might have preserved original stuff as well. I seem to remember Jane's wedding dress being sold, so that probobly still exists.
As for the stock warior jackets being used for the U.Studios tour stuff, well it seems likely. They had a cylon or two to frighten the kids, and the full size fighters were sat in a car-park there for a while.
The costumes are quite thin on the ground considering how many they made.
Pity the ones that do survive get bought by those frakwit's at rittenhouse and cut up for fraking trading cards!

Ernie,

You were exactly right. I just saw the sfx article from Memorabilia, and it says that Anne was given her jacket several years ago, and it did mention that Lauette's husband liked her Legend black leather outfit.

My GF has bought me an original BSG costume for xmas. Its one of the spacesuits. Specifically it was worn by Kent McCord in G80, so would be one of the two from 'Fire in Space' re-used.
If were a good boy, and Santa did indeed bring you this for Christmas....please will you post picture ? And of anything else original you may have ?

Happy New Year.......
