7. Special Announcement: Special Letter Writing Campaign

Special Letter Writing Campaign

January 2, 2004

A two-pronged letter writing campaign has been confirmed for 28 October 2003 and 2 January 2004, aimed at expressing the overwhelming, unified support of the fandom for a feature film continuation of Battlestar Galactica helmed by producer Tom DeSanto and series creator Glen A. Larson. Your help is needed, not only in writing your own letters, but also in spreading the word about the campaign as far and wide as possible.

Thumbs up NEWS: Colonial Newsletter - 11/12/2003

(Continued)

The first round of letters, aimed at DeSanto and Larson, should be mailed on 28 October 2003, in the immediate wake of Galacticon and the release of the DVD set. These letters (pen-and-paper letters, please; email should only be used to supplement a pen-and-paper letter) should contain positive messages of support on behalf of the fandom for a continuation helmed by these two immensely talented men, who have demonstrated a clear understanding of what makes Battlestar Galactica special, and who have demonstrated a clear understanding of what fans expect from a true revival of our beloved show. Letters should be sent to the following addresses:

Mr. Tom DeSanto
c/o William Morris Agency
151 El Camino Drive
Beverly Hills, CA 90212

Mr. Glen A. Larson
c/o Shapiro-Lichtman, Inc.
8827 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048

The second round of letters, aimed at Bob Wright, President and CEO of NBC-Television (the new owners of Universal Studios, which will need to work in tandem with Larson/DeSanto to create a big-screen Battlestar Galactica), and should be mailed on 2 January 2004, with the goal of having the letters hit the NBC mailroom on or about 7 January 2004, the one-month anniversary of the airing of SciFi's mini-series. The aim of these letters is to convince NBC that there is a ripe market for a true revival of Battlestar Galactica created by DeSanto and Larson. While the authors of these letters will have the ability to cite DVD sales figures and miniseries ratings figures in support of a continuation, the main message should be clear, and along the lines of:

"We support a continuation of the Battlestar Galactica saga, in the capable hands of series creator Glen Larson and producer Tom DeSanto. If possible we would support the use of original cast members such as Dirk Benedict and Richard Hatch. We are also open to other ideas as well."

Letters (again, pen-and-paper letters, please; email should only be used to supplement a pen-and-paper letter) should be sent to the following address on 2 January 2004:

Mr. Bob Wright
President
NBC
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, NY 10112

We encourage every fan of Battlestar Galactica to take an active role in making this letter writing campaign the most effective in Science Fiction history. Rising together, and speaking in one unified voice, we will realize our dream.

Please check in frequently for any updates.

8. Action Alerts: For All Battlestar Galactica Fans

Post Office Mail the Universal Entertainment Group

PRESS RELEASE: "BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (4-hour miniseries) - SCI FI re-imagines the groundbreaking and beloved series in which 'a rag, tag fugitive fleet' of the last remnants of mankind searches for its true home. Fleeing the aliens responsible for the slaughter of their homeworld, the Battlestar Galactica survivors must meet a whole new set of challenges. This intriguing twist on a classic will be written by writer Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission Impossible II) with Breck Eisner (Steven Spielberg's Taken; The Invisible Man) attached to direct. Distributed by USA Cable Entertainment, the Project will be executive produced by David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Spy Game)." The new miniseries is a re-imagining, and not a continuation, of the original Battlestar Galactica series, and may not include the original cast, characters, and themes! Send a post office mail to the Universal Entertainment Group! For more information, visit our Battlestar Galactica revival information page.

Boycott Commercial Advertisers of the Sci-Fi Channel

A brand-new web site has launched to support a boycott of commercial advertisers on the Sci-Fi Channel (and Vivendi-Universal, USA Networks/Studios USA). Fans are encouraged to visit the new site, and boycott any sponsor of the "Battlestar Galactica" re-imagining mini-series scheduled for the Sci-Fi Channel in 2003. The boycott site includes a link to the new Battlestar Galactica Sci-Fi Advertiser Boycott Petition (which we've also included in the list of primary petitions, below.) Also, the site features an extensive list of current advertisers on the Sci-Fi Channel, as well as a form letter that you can utilize. Help support the boycott of sponsors, and spread the word!

NEW! Sign the two new Battlestar Galactica Continuation Petitions

There are two brand-new petitions available for you to sign and show your support for a Battlestar Galactica continuation. The first petition is for Glen A. Larson and Tom DeSanto, and states: "We the fans of the mighty Battlestar Galactica would like to see the combined work of Tom DeSanto and Glen Larson in a major motion picture. As fans we also hope and pray that these two men can bring about a possible continuation with both the characters and actors that made the show a worth while venture. We don't ask for much but hope for a show that will make those who passed proud (Lorne Greene, Lloyd Bridges, Jonathan Harris, and John Colicos). Finally we believe that actions can speak louder then the printed words and hope that both men will take this request to heart." The second petition is for the possibility of a new continuation after the recent announcements at Galacticon 2003, and states: "As the author of the 'We The Fans Petition,' I am starting this new one. The word has been given at Galacticon. The fans want above all else a continuation of the beloved series with Richard Hatch(Apollo), Dirk Benedict(Starbuck), and as many of the other stars of the show who want to participate. I don't believe we are asking for to much as evidenced by the huge DVD sales for the original product." Be sure to sign the petitions and spread the word!

Petition #2 is the Battlestar Galactica New Series Petition aimed directly at the current Sci-Fi Channel happenings and utilizes stronger wording. Petition #3 is the Battlestar Galactica Fight for Survival Petition to support the new Battlestar Galactica production only if it is done right with direct linage of the original series and includes core members of the original cast in their original roles and includes the original Galactica ship. Sign the four optional Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions

The four optional Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions are also available for you to sign and show your support for Battlestar Galactica. The Battlestar Galactica Richard Hatch Petition respectfully requests that Richard Hatch make his trailer, "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" available to be shown on the Internet. Richard Hatch -IS- listening! If you agree with the petition, then sign the petition to make your voice heard. The Battlestar Galactica Sci-Fi Management Petition requests a change in management at the Sci-Fi Channel. The petition urges the Sci-Fi Channel to focus more on sci-fi programming, including Battlestar Galactica, instead of broadcasting non sci-fi television shows, or axing sci-fi shows that have done well, such as Lexx and Farscape. The Battlestar Galactica Save Starbuck Petition is a humorous petition, but for a serious matter: Ron Moore's new Battlestar Galactica mini-series script for the Sci-Fi Channel calls for Starbuck to become a female! Starbuck, one of the original series' most popular characters, becomes Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the new mini-series, and "Starbuck" is merely her radio call sign. If you want Starbuck to remain a male and make your voice heard, be sure to sign the Battlestar Galactica Save Starbuck Petition. Finally, the Battlestar Galactica No Re-Imagining Petition is a succinct petition that supports Richard Hatch's "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" continuation concept over the Ron Moore re-imagining felgercarb. You can make a difference, so be sure to sign the four optional petitions, after you sign the five primary petitions!

BattlestarPegasus.com to Return on November 26th

Webmaster Michael Faries of BattlestarPegasus.com and Space1999.org (and founder of BattlestarGalactica.com) has reported that his long-running web site will return! Michael Faries reports that: "As some of you know, I made a decision to retire from Battlestar Galactica fan-based web site work back on 5 June 2003. BattlestarGalactica.com, GreatWarofMagellan.com and RichardHatch.com went into the very capable hands of Mr. Darrell Lawrence; and BattlestarPegasus.com, like it's namesake on the original series, disappeared into the void of (cyber)space. I originally launched the BattlestarPegasus.com web site on 3 December 1998 -- the 20th anniversary of the original airing of 'The Living Legend, Part II.' On 26 November 2003, the 25th anniversary of the original airing of 'The Living Legend, Part I' the Pegasus RETURNS AGAIN. BattlestarPegasus.com will relaunch in support of the ORIGINAL Battlestar Galactica series." For the complete report from Michael Faries, be sure to read the announcement at Colonial Fleets, and be sure to visit BattlestarPegasus.com on November 26th!

Galacticon: Young Maren Jensen

Webmaster Darrell Lawrence of BattlestarGalactica.com posted an interesting report at Colonial Fleets: "This young lady was one of the cocktail waitresses at one of the clubs at CityWalk during Galacticon. I asked a friend of mine to take her picture (she agreed to it) because we thought she looked like a young Maren Jensen. When we told her that, she looked surprised and asked who Maren was. Kids these days... When I told her who Maren was, she was more than willing to have her picture taken." For the picture, be sure to check out the following link.

Battlestar Galactica: DeSanto's Revival

Cylon.org has posted an incredible report on Tom DeSanto's version of Battlestar Galactica. The article is written by Sandy, also known as the Two-Brained Cylon. In the opening paragraph, Sandy writes: "Tom DeSanto and Bryan Singer's Battlestar Galactica revival effort underwent a number of changes throughout its life. Their intended storyline began as a remake that eventually changed to a continuation effort designed to revive the original Battlestar Galactica series, ignoring the events of Galactica 1980, something fans universally supported. In Oct 2003, at the 25th Anniversary celebration of Battlestar Galactica, held at Galacticon, Tom DeSanto revealed much of the final intended storyline. He revealed fragments of the story through direct talks, private meeting, and a number of personal conversations. This synopsis is pieced together from those talks and is as accurate a portrayal of the final shooting script as possible. The Cylon Alliance welcomes any corrections or additional information you might have regarding this effort, the Galactica that could have been." For the extensive report that contains a lot of additional information and some pictures, be sure to visit the following link at Cylon.org!

The article was published in the Cinefantastique December 2003/January 2004 issue by writer Steven Simak. The article details the Battlestar Galactica project that Tom DeSanto had worked on with X-Men director Bryan Singer. At a later point, the project was shutdown in favor of the current mini-series production from the Sci-Fi Channel. For the complete article that is a must-read, be sure to visit the following link at the Battlestar Galactica Club Forums! Many thanks to Peter Noble for posting the report.

Request Battlestar Galactica Action Figures from McFarlane Toys

New report from Charybdis of Battlestar Callisto Gold Squadron: "I am asking anybody who will listen to email McFarlane Toys and ask, beg and plead with them to seriously look into making Battlestar Galactica toys and figures. In my introductory message, I listed all the great things that Battlestar Galactica is doing this year such as the DVD box set, the new cards, the books, the conventions, the video game and yes, even the new mini. The time to strike is now! Make your plea resonate with the sound of money for them! That's how they will listen! Also be sure to mention that it's the Original Series figures we want, but don't be disparaging toward the new mini. Here is the email addy for McFarlane, please spread the word: toys@mcfarlane.com."

Mini-Series Director Slams Original Battlestar Galactica

The director of the upcoming Battlestar Galactica mini-series on the Sci-Fi Channel recently slammed the original Battlestar Galactica. The director, Michael Rymer, lambastes that he "felt the original show was more of a 'Star Wars' knockoff than anything else. And before taking the job with Sci-Fi Channel, he had never really watched the original 1978 show." Battlestar Galactica Club member guide Kingfish has started a brand-new petition. The petition is a follow-up to his recent 'We The Fans' petition, and is for the possibility of a new continuation after the recent announcements at Galacticon 2003, and states: "As the author of the 'We The Fans Petition,' I am starting this new one. The word has been given at Galacticon. The fans want above all else a continuation of the beloved series with Richard Hatch (Apollo), Dirk Benedict (Starbuck), and as many of the other stars of the show who want to participate. I don't believe we are asking for to much as evidenced by the huge DVD sales for the original product." Be sure to sign the petitions and spread the word!

Galacticon: What Glen Larson said about revival

Colonial Fleets administrator conundrum7g posted a report of Glen A. Larson's discussion panel at Galacticon. The report states: "There was no big announcement, but Glen A. Larson did clarify his position and it sounded good. He said he paid a large sum of money to get back the rights to a Galactica movie. He said he can even do the version with walking vipers if he wanted to, though that's not something he is interested in. He also talked about how he and Tom DeSanto would like to do it together, provided he can tear Tom away from X-Men long enough to do it. And Tom said he is interested in doing something too! But he said he is waiting. A lot depends on how the audience changes after the mini airs. Will the vast public, and the fans of Battlestar Galactica migrate over to the new one and forget the original? Or will demand for a continuation stay strong? If there is a demand he will do what he can to make a movie with DeSanto." Many thanks to conundrum7g for the report!

The Return of Starbuck: Revisited

New report from ColonialFleets.com owner Titon: "Hello all. For the last few days I've been playing with the 'Goodtimes' video release of the Return of Starbuck. It isn't exactly the best quality but good enough to see the only episode from Galactica 1980 that a person could stomach. My first intention was to basically capture the video and clean it up the best I could, then burn it to DVD for archiving. Well let's just say the initial transfer was less than stellar. So instead I made a small QuickTime avi of a 'revamped opening' if you will. It's nothing stellar, I just filled in a few holes and basically played around with an idea. It's far from complete but it's a beginning. With that here's the zipped QuickTime file. It's about 4 minutes 22 seconds long. 320x240 format. The file itself is a little over 7 MB. In order to at least keep some quality in it I had to keep the file size up a bit. So if your interested in seeing something different, take a look. If not, oh well. Again, nothing spectacular and I only played with it for a few hours. Not looking to corner the market on video editing. Just playing around. Have fun. Download at your own risk."

Sound & Vision Battlestar Galactica DVD Ad

New report from Muffit at Colonial Fleets: "Wow, just got my new copy of Sound & Vision (a popular audio/video enthusiast magazine) and guess what I saw? A full page, full color ad for Battlestar Galactica The Original Epic Series DVD Box Set! Excellent Uni [Universal]! With a large readership of willing DVD buyers either looking for or upgrading their home theatre systems (and continually on the hunt for good DVDs to show them off), that's some well placed advertising. Interestingly, 98% of the ad is for the DVDs, with a little corner advertising the mini. Sounds like somebody at Uni is in tune with what the likely money-winner will be. I wonder, will there be more people to pay $80+ for the original than will tune in to the mini for free? Certainly, by the look of how the ad real estate is laid out, somebody at Uni thinks so. Yes, there are tons of us who remember and will gladly pay to see it again! Thank you Uni for acknowledging the fandom of this beloved show. We have more $'s for ya! Any takers for a big screen continuation?" Thanks to Muffit for the report!

Awesome new report from JohnBaxter at Colonial Fleets: "I received a message from Stu Phillips yesterday. He told me that Geffen Records will be releasing a digitally remixed CD to Battlestar Galactica. As far as he knows, it will be the same as the original LP. However, I have looked on Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Tower Records, and they all list the CD coming out November 18, with a bonus track. Sounds good. I can't wait! NBC/Vivendi Merger Creates Media Giant

The Associated Press has confirmed that NBC will acquire the entertainment assets of Vivendi Universal: "NEW YORK (AP) - After months of negotiations, NBC is getting its prize: Membership in the Big Media Club. NBC, a unit of General Electric Co. (GE), sealed a deal to merge with the entertainment businesses of Vivendi Universal (V), the companies announced Wednesday, creating a media conglomerate in the same class as giants like Viacom Inc. (VIA) and Walt Disney Co. The new company, to be called NBC Universal, will have a leading broadcast network, the Universal movie and television studios, 14 local TV stations, an array of cable networks including USA, CNBC and Bravo, and interests in five theme parks. With $13 billion in annual revenues, NBC Universal will still be small compared to the largest media conglomerates like AOL Time Warner Inc., which had revenues of $41 billion in revenues last year or Walt Disney Co.'s $25 billion. But the deal gives NBC something it has long desired: more clout with competitors, audiences and advertisers." For the complete article, be sure to visit the following link.
