Star Trek "These are the Voyages" Comments

As I posted over at CA:

Disappointing. Not what a series finale should be in any respect.

I agree with what's been said about Riker and Troi. While it was nice to see them in character, they should not have been playing those characters that young. After all, the Trek universe left them married and him going to command the Titan - they should have set it there and made their story arc correspond with that time frame. The writing of those scenes was haphazard at best and really served to detract.

The scenes with Riker as Chef, though, worked surprisingly well. We got to see, finally, some of the inner workings of the characters. A lot of that should have been done in Seasons 1 and 2, though.

Did not like Tripp's death. Too obvious (bad writing, sheer bad writing). Too pat (again, bad writing), and too predictable. I think the fans wanted Tripp and T'Pol to get together for real - or at least make the initial overtures. Instead they give us cliche'.

Unfortunately that's par for the course with the Beebs.

I'm glad they didn't try to create Archer's speech, though. I really am, for two reasons - this would have been a soul-stirring speech on a par with "I have a dream", or "ask not what your country can do for you". From a storytelling standpoint, those kinds of things as climax are often best left to the imagination of the audience. For another, the Beebs don't have it in them to write a speech stirring enough for a cup of coffee. Better - far better - in these circumstances to leave the speech to the imagination than for them to ruin still another big moment.

Oh - the very end sequence - the three captains doing the "These are the voyages" speech. That I liked.

All in all, though, Enterprise (and Star Trek?) has gone out with a whimper, not a bang as it deserved.

Thumbs down.

Here's the overnite ratings:

From Trek Today.

"The series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise brought little Friday the 13th luck to UPN, which finished very slightly ahead of the WB for the night, despite the fact that "These Are the Voyages..." managed only a tie for fifth place.

Enterprise earned a 2.0 rating/4 share for "Terra Prime" and a 2.4/4 for "These Are the Voyages...", according to Zap2It.

I second these thoughts.

I felt like I was watching a TNG ep, not Enterprise.

Not surprising, from the B&B crowd. Once more, they fail to live up to what Trek should be.
