Actually this is really growing on me.

This could easily fall into the Star Wars world as well. I mean some of the stuff i seen in the ROTS didn't even look like it could fly.

Sandy,

I think it's the best thing you've ever done, you can see how much far you've come even in the brief time I've known you.

I even like the grey shots. These ones I like because they always look like an unpainted plastic model kit!

That's a very cool looking ship. Looking down on it in the grey renders, the shape reminds of me of the "head" portion of the original Galactica model a little.

Nice work

Thanks again.

Peter,

My favorite model is always the one I'm working on at the time.

I was pretty rusty doing this one. There's a couple others than I really wanted to shine so this one was my "getting back up to speed" model. Honestly, I think I need do whip out a couple more before I'm ready to tackle the big payoff models.

Sandy,

Consider my jaw irreparably dropped!!! That is a damn fine looking ship you're working on! And I agree. It looks like it could belong in Battlestar Galactica (either incarnation), or Star Wars! Very, very , very ,very very well done, sir!

In awe,

Thanks Steve,

I'll get back to this one. I liked how it came out. It was a design I developed for a fanfilm idea. When I wrote the original script I'd planned on using this model, but I wanted something less like the Viper.

I really liked the AB Raider as well ... and who said nothing good came out of G1980. This isn't a canon model because I used some pretty sketchy material when I started and only got the better reference materal later on down the road.

Both moels will get finished sometime next year ... if only so I can watch them move on my newly acquired 36" television screen.

Very nice indeed. The above Viper-esque model is actually kinda reminiscent of the 6th millenium Viper we saw when Starbuck's recon Viper got hijacked....and he was trying to escape in a shuttle.

Respectfully,

How about watching them in the film from the script you wrote? I was really liking the story.

Steve,

There's a reason it looks like the 6th Mellinium Fighter. I based it off of a concept drawing for that fighter, although I wandered from that strict design to come up with the one shown above.

Jon,

I really like that script also and would love to see it completed. No matter the final use, I always crank out a couple of test animations to see how the model actually works. In several cases, I've learned that they actually take on different characteristics (personalities) when they start moving. For example, Darell's Cobra model has a marvelous character to it when you start flying it around. Ironically, the 1978 Viper is one of the least fun ships to animate. It just moves but it doesn't have the fun of the X-wing for example.

Interesting, next time we talk I'll ask you to elaborate on that for this non-fx guy. Just keep the script someplace where it can easily be dusted off. After Christmas 2006 we may get the bodies it takes to pull it off in style.

Thanks all.

Ernie,

Here's a fairly straight shot of a raider on deep patrol. I would use this as an intro shot before cutting to the cockpit to show the Cylon pilots operating the controls or cut to a rear shot of the fighter continuing on its path and then banking towards something, like a basestar or planet.

I got remarkable compression on this shot. Its only 1.1 megs for the quicktime video rendered at 720 x 486.

Sandy,

Thanks for posting a second test sequence....its bought you and your closet a little more time !

This climb shot is partiulary effective when showing a shot of a Fleet of ships, I've seen it used in fanfilms like that, and it was very effective.....

Keep 'em coming !

nice image Sandy . . .
I love the real-ness of it, it looks like you can touch it. good show bro
I didn't see the .mov tho, . . .
seems my mac is missing a codec or something. you'd think it would play it just because it is a .mov.
I guess microsoft even has to fiddle with everything it touches. Anyway I am sure the .mov rocks as well . . .

Hello folks,

I'm new at this forum and a total spacecraft buff.
I'd like to ask two-brained cylon: what reference do you have on the AB craft to incorporate this level of detail into your model.
Is it true to the details of the original miniature.? As far as I know it appeared only in "The Super Scouts 1" and "The night the Cylons landed 1" / "Conquest of Earth" respectively. I own DVDs of all those in reasonable quality, but could not identify the details seen in your renderings.
I'am trying to gather as much reference material on that thing for a future scratchbuilt model project (someday... ). If someone knows of more sources please let me know. Along with the classic raider and some Renegade Legion (FASA) designs it is my absolute favorite spacecraft ever! It would have given the similar sized Millenium Falcon a run for its money!
Too bad there's no model kit of it as it's not too well known.
Maybe one could get hold of the original studio miniature...
Would be great if you could help me out!

regards

Spicmart,

When I built that model, I did so based on some really fuzzy screen grabs. By comparing different shots, some of the details seemed to come together. Others seem to be the form that UFO buffs always seem to see in blurry photographs that the rest of us always miss when we look at the same shots. I worked some of it simply by taking the details on the base raider and adapting it over into what would logically fit.

Its not an exact copy of the studio model but like you, I couldn't get any clear shots of the studio model. For animations, I think it will work well and that was my purpose.

If you decide to build a scratch model of it, let me know. I'll run off larger shots of the CG model.

Hey, that's pretty cool.

It'd be fun to make a physical model based on that layout. I like the fact that it's made up of large basic shapes with just a little panache here and there. The general layout is very indicative of the ship design styling they used for the original show.

In fact, it has a little whiff of the Asrosleds they used in the "Fighting 49th" episode of Buck Rogers... which is a GOOD thing. I liked thse ships.

Honestly, I think you've tapped into the flow... the mindset of the guys working on the original show. Good work.

A few kitbashed details and some apprpriate armor hull plating (be sure to add the red/orange stripes!) and you've got yourself a first-class Colonial Bomber.

Unless, of course, that WASN'T what you were going for. In that case, just ignore me... i'm seeing things where they shouldn't be.
