Default 12 hrs of Star Wars vs 20 hrs of Galactica...

As much as I like the first (last-?) 6 hrs of Star Wars, the Anakin Trilogy just leaves me cold. That leaves 6 hrs of GOOD Star Wars for me, and while I LOVE most of that, there's just something about Galactica that I find more enduring...
Maybe it's the universe that they created- it's so much more interesting/fun-?
Maybe it's that they had 8 (really more like 14 as far as I'm concerned) more hours to develope & explore their universe than Star Wars-?
Maybe it's that Galactica has many more interesting & less cardboard-y written characters-?

Maybe it's simply that the Viper KICKS ASS OVER THAT LAME X-WING!!!!!
-?

-Just posing the question- what's your opinion?

As much as I liked Luke back in '77, Apollo was the character I REALLY felt close to in '78-'79.
Yeah. I guess it's the characters.
AND the Viper.

I mostly feel the same way about Star Wars. I REALLY hated ep1, mildly hated ep2, but actually liked the second half of ep3. Although the first part of ep3 probably had the WORST dialog between Obi-Wan and Anakin ever! Ep4 and 5 are great, and ep6 is okay (would be really good without Ewoks). The special edition enhancements were mostly really good.

Galactica is just great, but its really hard to compare the two, since one was a big budget motion picture production and the other was a 70's television show. I do think that Galactica was able to do more with less. Many of the initial special effects were equal to the star wars sfx, and the miiatures were top notch. The Galactica miniature is probably the greatest ever built. The vipers are way cooler than x-wings, and the Raiders are my all time favorite space-fighter design of all time, even more so than the vipers.
I also think the Cylons are a more interesting foe than the Empire.

Story-wise there is no way for me to compare the two. I do think the galactica story is a little more dramatic with a greater sense of desperation. Since these are possibly the last humans trying to avoid being exterminated. While the Star Wars setting is a Civil War I never got the impression that the human race would be extinguished if the Empire won. Its basically just a really oppressive government.

As far as characters go, I think they are all archetypes.

I would mostly prefer Galactica but Empire is a masterpiece unto itself, the music, the characters and everything else. Not enough X-wing's in that for one thing though.

I think that's the key thing here for me.

If *only* the other two movies had been able to reach that level.
Ahhh, Lawrence Kasdan, writer extraordinaire!

Killing Boba Fett so easily was a mistake also...
However, Mark Hamill singlehandedly made that movie work!!! He had heart. He was the soul of the movie, and for that, I love it.

Still, Vipers rule, and Cylon voices creep me out more than Vader's.

I could never get into Star Wars. The characters just never interested me. BG on the other hand...

Hmm, not quite apples with apples (and I'm not thinking the obvious theatrical vs TV as there is argumant that BSG TOS was the movies on the small screen.. think what they would have done with a high def plasma hometheatre with full stereo sound.... stop that thought.. it will only cause me to want a remastered rerelease)

I'll always watch original starwars (4), then empire (5) which are good and still hit the pleasure nerve, but after that, an increasing feeling of sinking disappointment as the concept was butchered by its own creator who had a fixation on cute 'n cringeworthy beasties means I don't sit and watch the rest of the movies.

BSG TOS I'll rewatch anytime, even if it was often too rushed, or unpolished, but it had its guts ripped in its second season and that much anticipated return to TV was a truly devastating (media) moment for me and I have never watched G80 eps more than once or twice max. Too many cute n cringeworthy characters..... (must be something in the waters in 1980 boardrooms, cos they even stuffed Doctor Who at that time, as well..)

Cheers,
Lara

Well, I love both. But I have always said that Star Wars is my favorite movie and BSG is my favorite television show...(although, yes, BSG was also released as a movie or movies, but I don't really count those since it really began as a tv show).

now, that being said, I love the viper better than the X-Wing and I take the Cylons pretty equal with the stormtroopers (gotta love the armor!).

In the end, if I was stranded on an island with electricity and could only have one DVD set to watch, which would it be? Hands down: BSG!!!

Interesting discussion.

Well, I will say it from the view, perspective of 1977-78

Star Wars blew me away. (Ep-IV) As with e-1 else
- was aqbout 12 years old.
And Empire Strikes back was indeed a Great Film.
Cemented Star Wars as an Icon.

It took us out of this world, out of our world. Literally it did.

BSG was almost same reaction. But it was more earthly bound or related.
The characteristics of flight were more earthly. As a kid it was very very cool to see the flight scenes and models. It was like something you might
get to do later on. something that seemed possible.

Overall in post years of both, I sway to and fro on these Titles.

Star Wars being the fantasy and BSG being more earth bound/related.

Even more so than Star Trek.
