Default DeSanto Concept-First post!

Ok guys and gals, time to kick this place into gear. This section is for works in progress of anyone wanting to display there in progress art work. Well here's something i started a while back. I kind of let it hang so yes it is a wip!

Out of the DeSanto slide show everyone seen there's a presidential ship concept for President Mara. I give you the rough concept work in progress of the ship i began month's ago. Remember anyone posting here that it's not a completed projection so there will be flaws. But here ya go.

Here's the picture of the ship, just follow the links to the in progress renders.

*Warning*, the renders are rather large so open them at your own risk! Hehe.

Battlestar Galactica 1978

How about if I throw eggs, since that is the drawing showing, and not the mesh?

Throw tomatoes?? Enjoy

Question, if you know any of this history: It seems to me Colonial 1 has retained some of this form only with a larger cargo/passenger cabin sort of melded in like a fin behind the sort of vertical saucer shape. Did the same artist design Mara's ship and Colonial one?

It's all good!

Titon, what size would the ship be in comparison to the other ships in the fleet?

Looks good but no different than it did last year.

What the Hell have you been wasting your time on anyway? ... like there's something we want to see more than the president's ship. Jeeeezzz.

Seriously, I think you're getting to the point that you either have to ad-lib a bit and fill in details the drawing doesn't show or you're at the part where texturing will finish this up and get it ready for animation.

DOH!

Actually your 3rd line is why i kind of stopped. It will have to be an ad lib. I'll try and model some stuff to flow in with the rest of the fleet.

Peter i'd say it would be preportionate to the Presidents ship in the GINO.

Sorry for the delay folks. I hate being a damn perfectionist.

You just have to know when to let it go. What you have started is amazing. It's worth the wait.

As you know, if I were gonna bug you to finish something, it wouldn't be the president's ship.

... like I'm one to really talk. I have an unfinished AB Raider sitting in a directory surrounded by about 30 other unfinished models.

Myself, I've found that the drawings are good guides but shouldn't be considered as anything more than a guide. When you look at the original artwork and the models that were developed from them, the physical models were often interpretations of concept drawings than actual replications. I think the same approach should go for much of Galactica's ships. In many cases, this is just a CG extension of the elaboration the modelers did in the late 70s.

Some of the designs, like the Galactica, should be as accurate as possible. Some others are pretty rough and it would be hard to get them to look "right" in animations without some enhancements. President Mara's ship is one of those IMO.

I look to the Klingon D7 as a good example of this methodology. The series D7 was very, very basic but very, very cool. In Star Trek - The Motion Picture, that same ship returned and it was awesome. Nobody could deny that this was the same ship, brought up to contemporary film standards. It still shows strong, even considering how dated that movie is.

The original Galactica design still works well due to its detail. A few of the medium resolution models would need enhancements if they were ever used in a creative way. I doubt any of the folks who designed these models would disapprove of that.

Of course, I'd love to sit down with them and ask them in person.

Titon,

Seriously, I know how you are about recreating what was seen on screen, and your dedication to it is thorougly commendable. My dad's a perfectionist, but he had to be because he made parts for aero engines at Rolls-Royce, it's just a pain sometimes to live with one in everyday life! (ask my mum)

Re, the model: It needs some nernies and widgets! I want to see the odd Panzer tank part and a red-orange stripe or two to make it look like a TOS model!

Best,

Peter

I'm getting ready to display some work in the coming weeks guys.

I was all hyped up to get this portion of the forum ready for viewing cause there's so much i want to show. Then this house deal came about and now it's taking every waking moment of my extra time.

Do not fear though cause what awaits is worth it.

Thanks Jewels.

Peter and Sandy i really want to express how happy i am to see you posting here. May we never loose sight of why we all became friends.

Don

It feels good again (fandom) better than it has for about two years IMHO. The mood is very positive even though we never got what we wanted. There are different BSG TOS projects taking shape in a variety of formats, it's all good.

I know I rib yourself and Sandy about the limits of CG sometimes but you guys rock!

Dear Titon,

Great to see you posting a lot of CF....I was wondering if could ask a question ?

Are you creating these renders for personal please and our enjoyment, or is it for some kind of (official or unofficial) project that you have up your sleeve ? Either way it is very good to see them.....

Ernie, most of the stuff you see presently is personal use.

There's always that hope that it could be used for a continuation. Keep the faith.
