Default Peace in the Galactica Universe?

Although much would need to happen in order to have peace in the Galactica universe, it would be nice if it happened. For quite some time, Galactica's house has been divided, and to quote President Lincoln, "a house divided cannot stand". Whether it was Lincoln referring to the country during the Civil War or whether it is 2 groups of people arguing about a TV show, the same principle applies. We are much stronger together than apart.

It is very possible that NO production could be the result if the house remains divided. The way events are being played out today, to use Moore's existing script or not, there will be a Winner and a Loser. The network may want to spend their financial resources on a product that would have wider acceptance. They may feel that the two groups are putting them in a no-win situation.

(You all know my feelings about BSG, so I won't repeat them here).

Just some random thoughts,

Default Well, All I can say is

That the Continuation Forces have expressed a willingness to find areas of compromise, which has been met with extreme resistence.

How can there be compromise if one side refuses to change even a single word of the Holy document?

Agreed, there is no compromise when only 1 side makes concessions.
Call me an eternal optimist. Note: call ALL of US that, after all , we're still here after 25 years.

Default Re: Death of the franchise?

I would disagree with this. There may be two sides to every debate, but that does not mean the two sides weigh equally. For example, one wouldn’t normally call a 99% to 1% division a “divided house.”

On the one hand, there are Galactica fans who exist throughout the world. A real, vibrant, and tangible fanbase. People who watched the original and liked what they saw, whether they saw it when it first aired, or through subsequent reruns throughout the decades like myself. They know what Galactica is and have certain legitimate and understandable expectations as to what a new production should be like. However, the reality of the situation is that most people who have seen the original probably have no idea of what this new production is like, and might not yet even be aware of its existence as of yet. Yet, this does not change the fact they are a real fanbase, ready to be tapped into – and, conversely, turned off.

On the other hand, there is a small cadre of online Ronald Moore fans pushing a script simply because it’s by Ron Moore. This already shows the limitations of their “fandom” as how many potential viewers even actually know who the heck Ron Moore is? Much less search the internet for his scripts to proclaim their undying love of them? Then there’s the not-so-insignificant fact the show they promote doesn’t even exist. Not a single frame filmed. There are no “silent fans” around the world. There can be no question their fandom is an infinitesimally small group. As a consequence, I would argue the loss of this tiny fanbase is hardly a major blow to the franchise.

Loss of the established fanbase, however, is potentially devastating.

It's also worth adressing that the advertisement for the new production contains sound effects and imagery from the original series. Granted there is no footage shot as yet but you can bet, come November, SCIFI will still be advertising this thing with familiar imagery and not stuff related to the remake. The commercials will contain the token "traditional" Cylons that barely appear, not the light up spines or human Cylons. The advertisements show a world of truth. They want the masses who remember the original series, but will not give them something that resembles the original.

Rhade,

I agree with you in that the.. "Loss of the established fanbase, however, is potentially devastating." I do not know the percentage of (sorry folks) 'Old Guard' vs. Newcomers. I know it's certainly not 50-50, but it probably is more than 99-1.

The point that I was trying to make is that Universal may not be convinced of the potential audience numbers to which a re-make would be acceptable. That may be enough to cool their interest and cause them to consider postponing or even cancelling production. Vocal and passionate about the Moore script, as they are, there may not be enough 'new' people to warrant the expenditure necessary to produce the re-make, not if the 'established fanbase' leaves in droves. I will guarantee myself as one who absolutely will NOT have anything to do with a re-made BSG if produced according to the existing Moore Script.

The only problem is that they are holding many of the cards now, not all the cards, but many of them. We just have to keep the faith, do what ever we can to promote the idea of keeping the existing storyline intact, and basically wait and see.

Hope this clarified my previous comments.

Keepin' the faith,

Default I'd rather see nothing

I'd rather see nothing get made than a Ron Moore remake. The BSG franchise is far better off in that situation IMO than letting Ron Moore steal the Battlestar Galactica name and some imagery because he can't convince anyone to let his show stand on its own merits.
