Default Is the viper on the scifi ads fake?

From what I remember from that widely circulated miniseries script on the internet, The Galactica and its Vipers were outdated and considered obsolete.

The bulk of the miniseries uses a new viper. But there is a bastardized "hommage" where in the decommisioning ceremony of the Galactica the "old" vipers were flown in a breif flyby. But that's it for the old vipers. The rest of the mini has a new viper.

So is the viper in the commercials the old one? If so...then that would mean they are using it to get "approval" from bg fans, but as soon as we feel happy to see it they switch back to the new Vipers? Which means we are screwed with another pile of crap design. ...ALL the art designs we have seen from the miniseries has lacked any real sense of style. And have been pretty gaudy and garish.

So is the commercials teasing us with false hopes too?

Is this the new viper? Or is it some prop they plan to dispose of as fast as possible. And its just there so they can make some commercials that look somewhat like the old show?

I can see your point. The SciFi channel has done all kinds of things in their advertising to lure the uninformed in to watch their new miniseries. They've used the Cylon sounds, the logo, Vipers and even a "classic" Cylon to make connections to the original series. The oddest thing is, we haven't seen the Galactica herself or a BaseStar yet - I guess that the SFX photography isn't done yet or they are doing some quick scrambling to make the SFX another attempt to sucker us in.

I don't even know why they bothered to "re-imagine" the Viper as subtly as they have - their design is only slightly different and the "new and shiny" look doesn't really work for me anyway.

As for the Viper being real? Well, they do have some full size mockups done for the mini - if they do change out the design again - its' gonna cost them!

Come to think of it the Viper reminds me of the toy they sold many years ago. A missile fired from the nose of the ship.

I agree with you Bryan 100% The new design is really kinda cheap ambulance plasticky. I'm not happy with it.

But the thing that made me bring it up is that after reading the script I know there are TWO different viper models in the miniseries. One is suppose to look like the old version we are familiar with. One is radically different. The "older" model is used very very briefly. There is a scene where the Galactica is decommissioned in a big ceremony. Lee Adama gripes at having to fly his hated father's viper. But ends up flying it in a simple flyby of the battlestar.

But that is it. That's all we see of the old viper.

So then the commercials we are seeing of Kara Thrace reading for take off is for that scene. But it implies that it IS the viper for new show. But its one of those quick disposal scenes. Like seeing the Jupiter design return in the lost in space movie only to be cast off. Then we were left in that sucky design.

I think that ad is another hollow tease

If I recall Moore's script correctly, the old Viper model is the only one that doesn't fall prey to the Cylon attack. Therefore, it would be used rather extensively in any battle against Cylon Raiders. I would be surprised if they abandoned it immediately after the opening sequence; I would expect only a short view of the newer model.

There I go, discussing G03 as if it was BSG. Thanks a lot, Conundrum.

Seriously, I wouldn't put anything past this production. After all, they're showing cold-blooded baby murder, on camera. You may be dead on right, Tom.

Yeah, and they discontinued it because they wee afraid kids would choke on the missle. Maybe kids will "choke" on the mini as well....

The new Galactica 2003 mini series. Sounds good at first glance...but ...the more you learn about it, the worse it seems.

(dont' care what you all say.. that is the one scene I do wanna see LOL reminds me of Babylon - Bear......) has there been a changed script? since all the new vipers are supposed to fall to the computer hack.. and the old ones re not affected.....

I may be wrong on how many scenes that the classic viper. But from the impression I'm getting is that the new one is the stylish Moore Viper. The old is just there to play a small part.

They probably just turned off the higher cpu functions in the new vipers.

yup.. the new mark 10's
honestly tho - I don't see the prob with 'em. just a logical upgrade from the originals. there's far more to complain about!

the virus (?) deactivates the computer controlled weapon systems. the older ones are nto affected by this.

now... I'm on the fence over the whole issue. it may be crap. it may be good. but at least it's Science Fiction! which is a rare thing these days!

It's not a FAKE ......the VIPER is supposed to be
COMMANDER ADAMA'S and his Son is flying it.
It's "SUPPOSED" to go into the Galactica as a
permanent memorial I guess.

I saw pics of the new ones. I can find
better stuff then that at the MICHAEL'S
designs store!

Calm down, shiningstar.

When I said fake, I didn't imply that they weren't in the remake. By fake I mean they commercials are alluding to the new show being similiar to the old show using vipers just like the original.

But based on their screen time in the mini, we may be mislead. That the old style vipwer is there for the teaser commercials. And that they have a limited role in the new series. And the commercials are giving audiences the wrong impression.

The Viper we see now... may not be the viper we get.....

But its also Bonnie Hammer and SciFi Channel... the ones who canceled Farscape. They seemed intent on shutting us out and treating scifi fans like isolated freaks. She seems to forget...the major blockbusters like Star Wars, T2 and Matrix tend to be science fiction.

They got rid of Farscape partly cause of cost but also cause they didn't want "that kind of audience". Hammer has no clue as how to relate to a scifi audience. So she is axing as much as she can to make scifi a mainstream everyday kinda channel.

Can anyone say "Bait and Switch"?

First, "Red-Eye" then, Starbuck and Boomer and now, the Vipers. The defense may be that the Original items will, in fact, be in the mini and that may very well be true. But, they will probably be only for "token" appearances while certain other "items" will be there, in name only.

Doesn't it strike you as strange that for a production that claims to be "re-inventing science fiction", they have to reach back to the Original Series for so much?

guys.

I am entitled to my opinion.

right now, I see the shows I love, namely SF, ALL SF that is, being swamped by game shows, reality TV, Sport, gardening, DIY shows and Soaps.

and thats just here in the UK!

you know there is only 1, just ONE! SF show in production here at the moment? and thats stretching it because Strange is strictly Horror not SF?

so get off my back please. huh?

Kai, No one is on your back.

I just was talking about something we have in common. That there is a elite few in the Scifi channel establishment that has a view of scifi that is causing the problem you speak of, or at least heavily contribuitning to it. Instead of giving us scifi, they took away Farscape, gave us Scare Tactics and John Edwards and the Dream Team.

We agree with you! Our kind of scifi, the adventture-some popular scifi, is being made extinct by amoung others, The SciFi Channel!

I've noticed that there seems to have been an ongoing effort recently through the promotions to tie the new production to TOS. It strikes me as somewhat ironic. First, Sci-Fi tries to silence fans of TOS on its message borads and disregards objections to the "reimagining", and now they seem to be trying to convince us that the new production has a lot of elements from the original. Based on all that's been revealed about G03, it's just an elaborate con. But in light of past events, it's kind of amusing...

Default the con...

Shatter has it right in his last post... Of course that's what Sci-Fi is trying to do. When they publicize their travesty of a production, they need to tie it to TOS to get those half-baked fans and those who barely remember it to watch. They lay the trap by rekindling the old days, then you tune it to watch this piece of tripe... real nice...

Who's on you rback? I jsut see people presenting an old SciFi tactic, te bait and switch. ("Bait and Switch, an Original SciFi Channel Tactic!" I'm sure they would if they could... )

I think they don't know either. They'll probably use both, and leave the question open. That way if the fans completely HATE the new designs, they can use the originals and say "See, we meant to do this all along!" But if they aren't universally disliked, they will trash the original design and go with the newer one.

.. ok.. lets be clear here.
I don't like the viper design and I don't see what the fuss is about. (I also don't like Xwings, Y Wings etc...) the part about being on my back is stuff like 'the old biat and switch' comments. I only asked for clarification when I noticed the script I've read could have been changed, cos the old style vipers where in the first part quite a lot.

Kai,

"MY" comment about 'Bait and Switch' is most certainly NOT directed at you in any way.

My reference here is to the producers of the mini-series and their employment of Original series elements to entice the viewer and then, showing something entirely different from the advertisement/teaser.

If one hears the word "Cylon" and one sees an advertisement showing "Red-Eye" then, one would expect to see a tin-plated gall monging Cylon. Not Number 6. In the same respect, if the advertisement includes the Original Vipers, one would expect to see them featured in the show.

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

BST

btw, I agree with your sentiment regarding "logical progression". If you really think about it, that's all that most of us ever wanted. What we got, according to the script, is....well you know the story.
